Pre-Screener FormBruno is at risk due to behavior concerns. Recent incidents involving concerning behavior around both staff and adopters. Most notably, during a recent meet-and-greet, Bruno lunged and jumped on the adopter chest growling at an adopter after initially engaging in a calm interaction. He has also exhibited kennel reactivity, when staff pass by, baring teeth & growling. Bruno has shown to be able to decompress and engage positively with handlers in calmer. Medically, Bruno has mild abrasions and calluses.

Summary:: Due to Bruno entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 06/13/25: While off-leash at the Care Center, Bruno is introduced at the gate to two novel male dogs. With the first male, Bruno approaches with a neutral body posture and engages in mutual scenting through the gate. After the initial greeting, Bruno scans his environment and shifts focus to the handler. The novel male loses interest and begins displacement marking, while Bruno remains present and engaged at the gate. The first novel male is then escorted out of the yard, and Bruno is introduced to a second novel male. During this greeting, Bruno appears conflicted, displaying lip licking while scenting at the gate. The second male presents with a stiff posture and high, flagging tail before engaging in displacement scenting and walking away. Both dogs are separated, concluding the interaction. 06/01/25 Bruno is introduced at the gate to a Female greeter dog while off leash at the care center. Bruno will approach the gate with a neutral frame, scenting the greeter dog through the gate as she scents him as well. Bruno will mark in her direction, spreading his scent appearing sexually motivated. With a relaxed frame and curved tail, Bruno will begin to displace as he scents away from the gate, becoming aloof and ignoring the greeter dog for the remainder of the interaction. Bruno is returned to kennel, concluding the interaction.
Summary (5):: 07/29/25 Bruno is standing on his kennel door as the handler approaches. Bruno is easily leashed and taken for a walk. Bruno displays a relaxed, neutral frame while trotting alongside the handler. Bruno will sit gently when soliciting treats from the handler, taking them gently when administered. Bruno will allow petting as he remains still. Bruno maintains a moderate pace while on the walk, remaining relaxed as he enters the building. As a dog is exiting the building, Bruno and the handler step off to the side, waiting for the dog and their handler to proceed. Bruno offers paw to the handler while sitting gently. Bruno is returned to kennel, entering with no issue. 7/21/25: Bruno is a really great dog. He’s very sweet and affectionate. Our interactions consist of him gently wiggling and waggling into me as I pet him; and after getting out most of his wiggles, he likes to stand beside me, very relaxed, just taking in the view while getting backrubs and holding his toy. And speaking of toys, Bruno is a big toy-dog. His face lights up when I give him one, and he happily carries it on his walks, even holding on to it while I’m petting him. In fact, when I offered him a treat, he tried taking it while holding his toy and after realizing it’s just not going to work, and maybe concerned it might disappear if he put it down, he decided it was more important than the treats. He also walks nicely on the leash; knows “sit” and “shake”; and seems to be housebroken. (I’ve never seen his kennel dirty and he always potties outside). I just love him!
Summary (6):: 7/21/25:(Adoption Interaction ): When taking Bruno out for an interaction with an adopter Bruno entered the play pen and began scenting around. He would stop to mark near the gate from time to time but continued to scent around the pen for 2 to 3 minutes. Once Bruno paused, the adopter (who was standing far from Bruno) called him over offering treats with a flat hand. Bruno walked to the adopter and ate the treats out of the adopter's hand. The adopter (while still standing) went to pet Bruno under the chin after Bruno finished eating the treats and Bruno lunged up onto the adopter's chest growling. The adopter stayed still and the adoption counselor was able to pull Bruno away and take him out of the play pen. Bruno was grumbling and huffing while exiting the play pen but stopped once we reached the ramp. While entering the building Bruno was observed to pause and stare at staff walking pass but was able to be encouraged to walk with the toss of treats. Once in the dog rooms, Bruno went into his kennel without issue. 7/17/25: Bruno is standing at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is able to be leashed with ease and he pulls hard on the way to the behavior room for his assessment. In the room, he would jump up on the handler with a loose body and prance around the room. He would approach the handlers to receive pets and treats. Please see behavior assessment notes for more details. He pulls hard on the way back to his kennel and enters with no issues. 7/16/25: Bruno was observed to hard bark and bare teeth when his kennel was approached. 07/14 Bruno is at the front of his kennel standing on his kennel door as the handler approaches. Bruno will drop to all fours when handler unlocks kennel door, being leashed with ease as the lead is guided onto him. Bruno is taken on a walk where he displays a relaxed, neutral frame as well as maintaining a relaxed, moderate pace. Little to no leash pressure is applied as he trots alongside the handler. Bruno will explore sidewalks as well as dirt/grassy patches. He will take treats with a soft mouth when administered, sitting willingly when soliciting them from the handler. Bruno is returned to the facility where he will enter the building as well as his kennel with no issue. 06/29/25: Bruno is at the front of his kennel with a neutral body and wagging tail, and pawing the handlers head as they crouch to leash him. Bruno is easily leashed and walked out of the building. Bruno is neutral bodied and exploring his surroundings. Bruno does pass several dogs, but is not interested and does not react or show interest. Bruno will offer sit cues with the handler, and tolerates petting along his neck. Bruno is brought back to kennel after a bit with no issue.
Summary (7):: 06/18/25 (trainer note): Bruno is standing at the front of his kennel with a neutral frame. He is easily leashed and walked to the live room and placed on a drag leash. He paced around the room while panting. He was not interested in treats from enrichment items, or from the handler's hands. Handler sat down and Bruno enthusiastically approached with a loose tail wag and leaned into the handler for pets. He then walked away from the handler and began to lick his lips before he vomited on the floor. He paused and proceeded to vomit again. Handler cut the session short and returned him to his kennel and informed medical staff. 6/11 (reassessment): Bruno is sitting in his bed when a handler approaches. He readily comes to the front with a soft body and is easily leashed. He is taken to the behavior office for his reassessment. He enters the office, maintaining his soft body as he wanders the room before his handling assessment begins. Once the assessment is complete, he returns to his kennel without issue. 6/1/25: Bruno is observed to be growling at the handler when they are putting signs onto another kennel, Bruno will hop off his bed and begin to hard bark and growl more intensely as the handler lingers. The handler walks away to stop making feel Bruno uncomfortable. 06/01/25: Bruno is standing at the front of his kennel and allows the handler to leash him with ease. He is then brought to the play yard for a dog-to-dog interaction. Once inside the yard, a drag leash is placed on him and he is allowed to roam freely. Bruno approaches the gate, offering a nose-to-nose greeting. While sniffing his playmate through the gate, he appears disinterested and walks away, engaging in sniffing around the yard, displacement sniffing and being avoidant. He then re-approaches the gate for a second nose-to-nose greeting but begins to scratch at the gate before walking away again. For more information, see dog-to-dog note. Bruno is returned to his kennel safely with no issues. 05/30/25 (Assessment Note): Bruno is sitting at the back of his kennel but will approach the front, allowing the handler to leash him with ease. He is then brought out and escorted to the behavior room. Once inside, a leash is placed on him, and he walks around the room exploring, appearing skeptical and displaying signs of fear in response to sudden movements or sounds. Due to Bruno’s ongoing adjustment to the shelter environment, he is returned to his kennel and will be revisited for assessment on another day.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Bruno so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Bruno's fearfulness in care, we recommend he goes to an adult-only home. Place with a New Hope partner: Bruno came into the care center as a stray due to this his behavioral history in a home environment is unknown. In the care center he can present with a loose body, takes treats gently, and solicits attention from familiar handlers, he has also shown escalating behavioral challenges. These include lunging and growling at an adopter during an interaction, hard barking and baring teeth in-kennel, and leash reactivity toward passing staff. Bruno has been able to decompress and engage positively in calmer settings but exhibits poor impulse control and overstimulation in higher-arousal moments. Due to his reactivity, potential for defensive aggression, and unpredictable response to novel stimuli, Bruno is best suited for placement with a New Hope partner equipped to provide behavior modification and a structured environment.
Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Kennel presence,Low threshold for arousal,Other
Potential challenges comments:: Basic manners/poor impulse control: In the care center Bruno is noted to ump on handlers,Consistent training to teach him to sit or stay when greeting people, using positive reinforcement and redirection, will help manage this behavior. Please see the handout on Basic manners/poor impulse control. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Bruno gives clear warnings when he is uncomfortable and does seem to choose to avoid or retreat when given the opportunity. However, if prevented from moving away, there is a potential for escalation to higher-level warning behaviors and possible fear-based aggression. It is important to move slowly with Bruno, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow Bruno to initiate interactions with new people. He should never be forced to greet or interact if he is not comfortable and soliciting attention. Bruno would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings. See handouts on Decompression Period and Fearful and Defensive Aggression. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration/Kennel presence: Bruno is observed to hard bark in his kennel when staff pass. Low threshold for arousal/Other: During an adoption interaction the adopter (who was standing far from Bruno) called him over offering treats with a flat hand.
