Animal Profile

Kyle

Hello, my name is Kyle . My animal id is #239746. I am a male tan dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 10/20/2025.

Kyle is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Kyle has shown escalating dog reactivity in the care center, frequently pulling toward, whining at, and lunging at passing dogs both in the building and outdoors. On walks, he tenses, vocalizes, and is unable to take treats when highly aroused, continuing to lunge even at a distance. In lower stimuli settings he can be social and playful with staff but becomes over aroused quickly, pacing, panting, and attempting to mount. Medically, Kyle has otitis externa and is receiving treatment for CIRDC.

It is unknown if I have ever lived with other animals or children. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. Not only do I pull at heart strings, but I also pull on leash! I will need someone to help me with my leash manners.

Summary:: Due to entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 10/22/25 Kyle is introduced at the gate to a female greeter dog while off leash at the care center. Kyle doesn't approach the gate, reluctant to greet the female dog. Kyle maintains his distance, seeking attention from handlers present in bis pen. Kyle appears nervous, as he displays a low-wagging tail, proceeding to keep his distance from the gate. Kyle displaces, sniffing away from the gate before being returned to kennel, concluding the interaction.

Summary (6):: 11/11/25: As the handler approaches the kennel, Kyle is at the front, sniffing the bottom of the door. The handler leashes Kyle with ease and will pull moderately out of the kennel room, zig zagging in front of the handler. Once outside, he will tense up and lunge at dogs that pass at a distance. The handler is able to regain his attention with a treat scatter and then feeding him treats as they pass dogs. When they reach the top of the ramp, Kyle will stop taking treats and begins to lunge at any passing dogs, vocalizing. He defecates and as the handler picks it up, he lunges at a dog that passes close to the yard. The handler moves Kyle further to the back of the yard and tries to refocus his attention, which works briefly. He is then returned to his kennel and secured safely. 11/04/25: ACS Staff report that Kyle is whining and pulling towards dogs on walks and when passing kennels.

Summary (7):: 10/27/25 Kyle is lying down in his bed as the handler approaches. Kyle rises gently and comes forward, allowing leashing. Kyle is taken to the live room. Kyle maintains a moderate pace and a soft frame as they walk to the live room. Kyle is bouncy displaying a wiggly body jumping onto the handler playfully and allowing handling as he is pet. Kyle cant settle, pacing around the room, while panting. Kyle will attempt to hump the handler but with directional leash pressure the handler directs Kyle off of them. Kyle is administered treats in which he takes softly. the handler will also toss treats to the ground as Kyle jumps excessively. Kyle is returned to kennel where he will trot back over with no issue. 10/27/25: Kyle displays the same behaviors as of (10/26). Please refer to those notes. 10/26/25: Kyle is standing in the middle of kennel with a neutral frame as handler approaches. He comes forward as the kennel door is unlocked and is leashed with ease. Kyle walks on a loose lead to the Canine Behavior Office where he is kept on lead but free to explore the room at his own pace. Kyle is social with multiple handlers throughout his time in the room and will place his paws in their laps and lean in to solicit attention. After his session, Kyle is returned to kennel safely. 10/23/25: Kyle is jumping and hypersalivating at his kennel door as handler approaches. He begins pawing at his kennel door intensely and is not able to be redirected with treats or toys as the handler attempts to leash him. He would constantly try to jump up and shove his way out of the kennel as the handler tries to leash him. Once leashed, he begins thrashing on the lead and quickly stops on his own when the handler lowers the leash. He then pulls hard on the way to behavior room for his assessment. In the room, he would constantly jump up towards the handler with heavy panting and a tense body. He would hard stare and head whip when a second handler would try to approach. He would then continue to jump up towards the handler and lunge towards their leg. Another handler is able to step in and grab the leash and then he is double leashed. He is then taken back to his kennel, and he baulks in front of his kennel and had to be muscled inside due to not wanting to go back in. 10/22/25: Kyle is at the front of his kennel with a loose wiggly body as the handler approaches. Once the handler opens the door, Kyle starts jumping onto the door. The handler is able to lure his head into the leash loop with a treat and he comes out of the kennel quickly, pulling moderately to the play yard. Once in the yard, Kyle is clipped to a drag leash and will begin to solicit attention from the handlers in the yard. (see Dog-Dog for more information) Once the greet is over, Kyle's drag leash is switched out for the slip leash and he is returned to his kennel with no issue.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4

Recommendations:: No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): We reccopmend that Kyle be placed in an adult-only home at this time.

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Strength/leash pulling,Low threshold for arousal

Potential challenges comments:: Basic manners/poor impulse control: Kyke is noted to jump on handlers and attempt to mount.Teaching alternative behaviors like “sit” or “focus,” paired with consistent redirection and reinforcement, will help reduce these behaviors and promote more appropriate social engagement. Please see the handout on Basic manners/poor impulse control. Handling/touch sensitivity: Kyle is noted to thrash on lead when placed around his neck.Training should include desensitization to leash placement using positive reinforcement and gradual exposure, along with the use of alternative gear like harnesses to reduce stress.Please see the handout on Handling/touch sensitivity. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression/Low threshold for arousal: He frequently jumps excessively, pants heavily, and struggles to settle, occasionally escalating to mounting or thrashing on leash.Kyle has also displayed handling sensitivity when highly aroused, including head whipping and hard staring when multiple handlers approach. Training should focus on arousal-reduction techniques, structured interactions, and reinforcing calm behavior to help him regulate his excitement and reduce defensive responses.Please see the handout on Fearful/potential for defensive aggression/Low threshold for arousal. Strength/leash pulling: Kyle is not to hard pull while on the lead.Training should include loose-leash walking techniques, such as stop-and-go or direction changes, and the use of appropriate walking tools like front-clip harnesses to improve control and reduce pulling.Please see the handout on Strength/leash pulling.
