Animal Profile

Simba

Hello, my name is Simba. My animal id is #147514. I am a desexed male tan dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 1 months 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 9/5/2024, with the surrender reason stated as animal behavior - barks too much.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Simba is at risk due to behavior reasons. He is reported by his previous owner to hard bark and growl at strangers. This behavior has been observed at the care center as well. He is difficult to remove from kennel due to barking at handlers and mouthing the leash. He is anxious outside, darting back and forth on leash and pulling to return to kennel. Medically, he is apparently healthy.

Summary:: 9/12/24: Initially, Simba would not approach the gate to greet another dog. He is able to be coax and he greets the other dog with neutral body and flicks his tongue before moving away.

Summary (4):: 9/16/24: Simba is at the front of the kennel barking when the handler approaches. He jumps up on the kennel door, continuing to bark as the handler tries to leash him. He dodges the leash multiple times, whipping his head around and stops to cough. He is leashed after a few minutes and is taken to the backyard. He relieves himself immediately and paces around the yard, aloof to the handler. When other dogs pass by he fixates on them, rapidly approaching the fence with a stiff body and high tail. He is not redirectable and has to be pulled away. He is clipped while he is distracted watching another dog and is returned to kennel without issue. 9/14/24: Simba is standing in the front of his kennel barking as handler approaches. As handler begins unlocking Simba's kennel he begins hard barking towards handler. He is not receptive of treats but lowers his head to allow leashing when kennel door is opened. Simba is brought to the play yard for his walk. Once outside he pulls forward moderately and uses the bathroom. He begins walking around the perimeter of the yard and enters a play yard to sniff and continue using the bathroom. After using the bathroom he briefly attempts to pull back into the building, he does not take treats at any point including when attempting to redirect him. He gives up shortly after and allows handler to walk him around the perimeter of the play yard for about 3 laps before being returned to kennel without issue. Once inside kennel Simba stands on his hind legs and hard barks at handler from the front of the kennel as they are locking the kennel door.

Summary (5):: 9/12/24: Simba continues to bark at handlers and dodge the leash when handler approaches and attempts to take out. However, he has begun mouthing the leash, placing his mouth on the leash gently then tossing it aside. It takes many minutes to get a leash on Simba. Once out, he continues to be anxious, darting back and forth pulling towards the building. Handler is able to coax him to walk around. When returning to kennel, he cage fights with the other dogs and when returning to kennel, he goes in easily but jumps onto the door as it is closed and hard barks. 9/11/24: Simba is standing at the front of the kennel barking at the handler, jumping up while doing so. He is not interested in treats. Handler attempts to leash him and he shakes it off, jumps up and barks. Handler removes the leash but keeps the door open slightly. He will remain at the front and periodically bark at the handler. Handler makes numerous attempts to leash him but he shakes it off and barks. Eventually, Simba places his head in the crack of the door and handler is able to place the leash on him. Once on, he attempts to shake it off. He darts back and forth on leash anxiously, seeking exit when in pens and pulling to go back into kennel. 9/8/24: Simba is standing at the front of the kennel when the handler approaches. He begins barking and takes a step back as the handler unlocks the kennel door and presents the leash. He is not lured forwards and does not take treats. When the handler tries to lasso him he barks, jumps up, and shakes his head. He dodges the leash multiple times and will thrash and whip his head around when the loop gets around his neck, effectively tossing the leash off of himself. He continues barking, jumping up and down, and retreating before reapproaching the front multiple times. He eventually stops dodging as much but will shake the leash off if it gets over his head. He lays down and continues barking. The handler ends the interaction due to FAS. 9/7/24: (PM) Simba is laying near the front facing the front of the kennel He stands with tense body and wagging tail. Handler speaks softly and opesn the door without making eye contact. Leash is presented and Simba back while jumping backwards. Handler retreats and kneels down. He comes forward again, tense body. Handler attempts leashing again ans Simba retreats while barking. Interaction is ceased due to his stress levels.

Summary (6):: 9/7/24: (AM)Simba is laying in the front of his kennel as handlers approach. He begins barking and slightly showing teeth at handlers when in front of the kennel door. Handlers offer treats and toys which he ignores and proceeds to move further back into kennel. Handlers open kennel door and attempt to leash Simba for approximately 15 mins, in which more treats and toys are produced to coax Simba to the front however he refuses these and at one point startles when the leash is moved closer to him. He stands very quickly with a stiff body and stares at handler. Handlers end interaction so as not to further stress Simba. 9/6/24- Simba is at the front of the kennel with a neutral body, whale eyeing handler. Handler tosses a treat but shows no interest. When handler attempts to leash, he barks at handler and retreats to the back of his kennel. Another handler gets chicken and tosses in, Simba just sniffs it. First handler attempts to lasso him but he shrugs the leash off. He continuously turns his head away when being leashed and lip licks. Another handler grabs a pole and utilizes it to leash Simba, handler was able to successfully leash him. He slowly exited the kennel and when another dog started to bark at him, he started to thrash trying to go back into his kennel,. Handler tugged him away and he laid down for a moment, handler continued to walk and Simba followed. He pulled hard and was frantic when going to the play yard. Once outside, he continued to pull hard. Once in the pen, he sniffed around for a moment and immediately went to relieve himself. He was hypervigilant in pen, (heavy panting, looking around, constantly pacing around). When another dog in the pen came to the fence, he went to greet with a slightly tense body. Handler squeaked their squeaker and he followed handler. Another handler distracted when first handler clipped and he pulled hard when returning to kennel. He went in without issue. 9/5/24: The behavior team is asked to assist with bringing Simba into the building due to his reported history with strangers and behavior during previous stay. Simba is kept away by owner and he is neutral bodied. Owner places two leash on Simba and while distracted the leashes are handed to the staff members. He does not initially walk with staff, pulling back on leash but handlers are able to coax him forward with some pressure on the leash. In the hallway of the building, handlers stop near medical to see about getting his vaccines but no one was there. Simba begins to thrash and bite the leash. Handlers stand still loosening the leash a bit and he walks with handlers to his kennel. A hook is used to remove the leashes.

Summary (7):: Previous stay at ACC: 7/30/22: Simba is at the front of the kennel barking and growling. He dodges the leash repeatedly and snaps at it. Handler squeaks a toy and distracts him long enough to be leashed. He is taken outside where he remains aloof and avoids handler. He is placed in his kennel and a hook is used to remove the leash. 7/28/22: Later in the day when handlers approach, Simba begins to bark while remaining at the front. He shows no interest in the treats tossed in. When handler attempts to leash, he very vigorously shakes his head away from the leash, the looks at the leash and barks. A second handler squeaks something and he shows interst by remaining still but immedialy shakes and moves away from the leash. This is repeated a few more times and the handler is eventually able to get a leash on him. When returning to his kennel, he attempts to flail but handler has him on a short, leash and jogs into the room. Simba bounces into his kennel. 7/28/22: Simba is low growling with neutral body upon approach. He does not take treats offered but discontinues growling. When handler open the door and presents the leash, he comes forward and sniffs it but will dodge the leash when handler attempts to place on his neck. Another handler squeaks something and he stays forward long enough for handler to leash him. He comes out readily and explores the yard. He does not seek attention from handler. He is frantic, pulling in different directions at times. When returning to kennel, he begins to flail, standing on his back legs and shaking back and forth. He will not go in for treats. ENERGY LEVEL:: Simba is described as active and enthusiastic. They will need daily mental and physical activity to keep them engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend using force-free, reward-based training techniques for Simba.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Simba's behavior in the home, Simba should go to a home with adults. No Dog Parks: Due to hard barking and growling at dogs we recommend no trips to the dog park. Place with a New Hope partner: Due to all noted concerns displayed in a home and Care Center environment, the behavior department recommends Simba be placed with a New Hope placement partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only foster home. A period of decompression is recommended to allow Simba to acclimate comfortably to his new environment; force-free, reward based training only is advised when introducing Simba to new and unfamiliar situations.
