Animal Profile

Dandelion

Hello, my name is Dandelion. My animal id is #222576. I am a female gray dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 8 years 2 months 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 3/17/2025.

Dandelion is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Dandelion has been observed to jump up and intensely bite the leash until passing out. This behavior is not able to be redirected using treats. While exiting the kennel room Dandelion has been observed to cage fight with the neighboring dogs. After reacting to the dogs Dandelion turns towards the handler, the handler has to straight arm her to keep her away. While out with handlers Dandelion allows them to pet her. Medically Dandelion is overweight and has dental disease.

I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I am a sweet, social, older gal, looking for the perfect forever home! A staff member writes: Dandelion is a playful and curious girl who loves her toys and adventures! She greets you at the front of her kennel with a wagging tail. Dandelion settles into a nice walk beside her handler, toy still in mouth, calmly observing the world around her. She stays relaxed and focused, even when pausing to check out interesting sights. if you're looking for a fun-loving, curious companion, come meet Dandelion today!

Handler tosses a tennis ball in her direction and she carries it until she reaches the yard. While in the yard she engages in a game of 'trade.' She remains loose in the yard while engaging with handler and the game. She is returned without issue whilst holding the ball in her mouth.

Summary (5):: 5/29/25: ACS report that Dandelion is deteriorating. Stating that her pulling has gotten worse. They also reported that they feel like a toy makes it worse because if she drops it Dandelion will begin to frantically look for once while outside. 5/28/25: Dandelion has exhibited kennel reactivity. She nearly redirected as her body was turning towards the handler. 5/18/25: Dandelion is at the front of the kennel with a neutral body. She is easily leashed with a toy and the toy is dropped outside of the kennel. Dandelion exits the kennel and she grabs the toy. She drops it a few times as she exits the building. Dandelion is given another toy and she carries it to the street drops it while she relieves herself. She picks it up and drops it again and leaves it on the street. She stops frequently on the walk and refuses to move forward. Treats are use to encourage her to walk forward and back to the shelter. She stops and looks away outside of the kennel room before a treat is used to lure her into the room. She doesn't walk into the kennel after a treat is tossed and leash pressure is applied to encourage her inside. The leash is removed without issue. 5/10/25: Dandelion is at the front of the kennel with a neutral body and wagging tail. She is easily leashed by the handler showing her a toy. When the leash is on securely handler tosses the toy in front of the kennel. Dandelion exits kennel and picks up the toy. She pulls hard out of the room and to the street. Handler places a leash harness on her and she walks beside handler with no issue. Dandelion is still holding the toy as she is walking down the block. She is then returned to kennel without issue.

Summary (6):: 5/3/25: Dandelion is at the front of her kennel with a neutral body. She is easily leashed with a toy held outside the kennel. She picks up the toy and pulls hard out of the room. She is brought to the elevator where she allows the handler to leash harness her. Dandelion is brought to the street and walks alongside the handler, still holding onto her toy, pulling moderately. Dandelion occasionally will stop and turn around towards people that walk behind her. Squeaker is used to redirect her attention. Dandelion slows down when approaching the shelter and stops briefly, squeaker is used to encourage her forward but it is not successful. Leash pressure is used and Dandelion is returned to her kennel without further issue. 4/27/25: Dandelion was observed to leash bite at a high intensity. Dandelion then passes out and stops leash biting. When Dandelion recovers, the handler tosses treats and Dandelion eats the treats and picks up a nearby toy. She then leaves with the handler for her walk carrying the toy. 4/23/25: It is reported on the behavior board that Dandelion plants when outside and when returning to kennel. 4/19/25- Dandelion is at the front of her kennel with a neutral body, she is easily leashed. They straight arm and toss treats ahead, she goes to eat them. She is taken for a street walk, she pulls hard and makes herself almost pass out. She pulls hard throughout the walk and sniffs around. Handler calls to her and she comes, gently taking a treat from their hand. Every time she pulled ahead, handler called to hear and she comes back for a treat. She has no reaction to any stimuli. She allows handler to pet her head, neck and back. She is easily clipped and returned to kennel without issue. 4/17/25: Dandelion is reported to cage fight and will try to redirect onto handlers.

Summary (7):: 4/12/25: Dandelion is at the front with a neutral body and wagging tail. She is easily leashed and pulls hard out of the room. Dandelion pulls towards the passing kennels and begins leash biting and jumping towards handler when they are about to exit the room, treats are tossed as she is straight armed. Dandelion then suddenly passes out. She is given a minute to recover and she gets up. More treats are offered to Dandelion but she doesn't eat them and ignores them when tossed. Dandelion allows handler to make a harness with their leash. She pulls hard on the harness. Dandelion is aloof with the handler throughout the walk. She relieves herself. Dandelion spots a dog behind her and continues to stop and turn to the dog. They cross the street. Dandelion continues to pull and stops to sniff things. In the elevator, the leash harness is removed and Dandelion is returned to kennel without issue. 4/10/25: ACS report that Dandelion will hard pull hard while on leash and will pull hard towards people. Summary:: Friendly, allowed all handling

Date of initial:: 3/18/2025

Summary:: Tense body for exam

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Dandelion so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Recommend no dog parks

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to rope reactivity we recommend an adult only home. No Dog Parks: Due to the potential for redirection we recommend no trips to the dog park.

Potential challenges: : Fearful,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful: During her medical exam Dandelion was observed to be tense. It should always be their choice to approach a new person or thing. Dandelion would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period. On Leash Reactivity: It is reported that Dandelion will cage fight and then attempt to redirect onto handler. Dandelion will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Leash Biting: Dandelion has been observed to jump up and bite the leash until passing out. This behavior was not able to be redirected. We recommend walking them with a toy to dissuade them from grabbing the leash. Positive reinforcement, force-free training is advised to teach them to focus on you rather than grabbing the leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners.
