Danny Boy

Hello, my name is Danny Boy. My animal id is #225567. I am a desexed male brown dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 4/26/2025.

Pre-Screener Form

Danny Boy is at-risk due to behavior concerns. Danny Boy has also demonstrated overstimulation and poor impulse control issues, often becoming overstimulated and engaging in intense mouthing, jumping, leash biting, and nipping, which has resulted in a handler getting tooth scrape bites. He also grabs at handlers' clothing, legs, and treat pouches, requiring intervention from multiple staff members for redirection. Despite these challenges, Danny Boy is highly social and engages positively with enrichment activities. Medically, Danny Boy has dermatitis.

They held him away when he did this. Danny Boy frequently walked in front of them, turning and facing them. Danny Boy quickly grows in arousal and frustration, with a hard face, he escalates from baring teeth to hard barking and charging the gate. The greeter female will display hackles and hard bark in response. Both dogs are immediately separated, thus ending the interaction. 04/28/25 Couldn't conduct due to lack of focus. Danny Boy seeks constant attention from handler, unable to get a clear read. Will revisit at a later date.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Danny Boy's Potential challenges, we recommend that he be placed in an adult-only home at this time. Place with a New Hope partner: Danny Boy came to the care center as a stray, so his behavior in a home environment is unknown. At the care center, he has shown some behavioral concerns. He has shown to become aroused, often becoming overstimulated and engaging in intense mouthing, jumping, leash biting, and nipping, which result in a handler getting a tooth scrape bite on their thigh and leg. He also grabs at handlers' clothing, legs, and treat pouches, requiring intervention from multiple staff members for redirection and safe handling. Despite these challenges, Danny Boy is highly social and engages positively with enrichment activities, but he struggles to settle in the care center environment. Danny is available for rescue through one of our New Hope partners.

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting,Low threshold for arousal,Bite history (human)

Potential challenges comments:: Basic manners/poor impulse control/Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition: Danny boy has demonstrated a lack of basic manners in the care center, jumping up onto staff. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Leave it", "Sit/Stay", "Down" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. See handout on Basic Manners and Impulse Control. Handling/touch sensitivity: Danny Boy should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Danny boy’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Danny boy may do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings. Bite history (human)/Fearful/potential for defensive aggression/Low threshold for arousal/barrier frustration/Leash biting:Danny Boy was taken out for a playgroup interaction. It was reported that Danny Boy was mouthy and jumped up often once out of the crate and once outside in the yard.
