Animal Profile

Shawna

Hello, my name is Shawna. My animal id is #221544. I am a desexed female tabby cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 2 months old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 3/1/2025, with the surrender reason stated as animal behavior - not good with kids.

Shawna is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and is deteriorating in the Adoptions room. She is now displaying signs of frustration and overstimulation. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

What my friends at ACC say about me: I have lived with cats in my previous home. I'm an independent kitty who likes to do my own thing. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I will flourish in a calm environment and a low-traffic home. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. A volunteer writes: Shawna helpfully tried to open her cubby door by reaching her paw through the opening. Her adorable outstretched paw may just be the perfect introduction, but there's always a lot happening in the Care Center and it seems to be a lot on dear Shawna. Once the door was fully open, she popped her head out to scan the room with big eyes and perked ears in her sincerest attempts to understand everything. While Shawna's someone who seems to want to say hello, her efforts to catalogue each new sight and sound can be quite time consuming. Eventually, she settled a bit and leaned her head into my hand. Shawna very sweetly asks for a slower approach when she meets new people and when I took the time to follow her lead, she seemed to open up quite a bit. When all the sights and sounds she'd catalogued became a bit too much, Shawna returned to her cubby. She's hoping to find someone who understands that making new friends can take time but is always worth it.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: Prior assessment 3/4/25: Shawna was resting on top of her den when approached. She immediately backed up on top of her den and hissed continuously at the assessor. Shawna kept a tense body as the scratcher tool made contact. She leaned forward and sniffed the tool, when the tool moved closer, she backed up further into the den. Shawna tolerated petting from the tool on the head and cheek and minimal petting on the back. The assessor used the tool to apply pressure to stimulate pick up and Shawna raised her paw and placed it on the tool as to push it away. 3/7/25 Vol. On top of box, paws out, ears forward, eyes narrow, looking around. Put in squeeze treat bowl - Shawna ignored at first, looking down, but then decided to come down to look out curiously and then eat greedily, pushing bowl close to front. Hissed once when refilling bowl while she was eating. Allowed gentle head touches with hand while eating. Kept refilling bowl and Shawna kept eating - even leaning over to lick treat tube but preferring the bowl. Allowed touches with hand. Let her eat, sweettalked and ended interaction. She licked bowl clean and started to clean herself before going back to box top to finish. 3/14/25 Vol. In top cubby with head lying on cubby entry - eyes 1/2 closed, ears forward. As approached sat erect, lots of lip licking, eyes and ears normal. Put squeeze treat bowl on shelf, she leaned out to sniff but did not approach. Approached with hard treats on scratcher tool, Shawna sniffed and gently pushed tool down. Approached with empty scratcher tool and Shawna allowed some head scratches before pulling slowly back into cubby. Added treats to bowl and Shawna came almost all the way out to dip paw in treat to taste and then bent to eat. Allowed head touches with hand while eating (often with her paw)Allowed refilling of bowl while she ate, still allowing head scratches with hand. She did not finish bowl but pulled slowly back into cubby. Sweettalked and ended interaction. 3/16/25 Vol. Shawna is in the bottom cubby behind the litter box, pupils slightly dilated, ears up, whiskers forward. She licks her lips, but then starts rubbing her head and chest against the litter box with fairly soft eyes. Shawna allows all petting and leaned into head and neck scratches and began to purr loudly. I extended the clicker with some catnip spray she is said to like, and her nose began to run. Making good progress but difficult to tell impact of her illness. 3/18/25 Vol. Stuck her paw out of of the kennel to say hello. Able to give her many pets. Interaction was during the afternoon feed so waited while she ate her regular food which she ate up. Then gave her some canned chicken which she gobbled up. Her food dish from the morning feed was completely empty and she seemed very hungry. *Enrichment Notes continued in GAN*

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Laid back,Mellow

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Curious,Skittish,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Inappropriate elimination,Overstimulation,Fearful,Other,New home adjustment period

Potential challenges comments:: It is likely that Shawna's previous home environment may have contributed to her fearful behavior and/or the stress from the children and resident cat/kittens may have triggered her inappropriate elimination. We would recommend a calm, quiet, and low-traffic home. Shawna was seen by a veterinarian and has no known medical issues. We are unaware of what, if any, modifications steps were taken to try and address this behavior in the home, so we cannot be sure what the trigger may have been or if this behavior may continue in a future home. However, we recommend that potential adopters be comfortable with management and modification techniques for elimination outside the litter box should this behavior continue in a home environment. During the two week litter box observation period, Shawna was reported to have 2 litter box accidents (on the 10th and 11th day) on her linens, and she was reported to appropriately use the litter box for all other days her litter box habits were recorded.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

RECOMMENDATIONS:: No other cats OR multi-cat home with adopters experienced with introducing new cats,Adult only home

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Shawna was resting inside the top cubby when approached, appearing alert with soft eyes. She showed curiosity when treats were offered and slowly engaged the main compartment. Loose body with tail high. During her meal, an attempt to pet her was made, which she tolerated with a stroke on the head. Shawna sat upright, looking at the assessor with soft eyes before hissing. A second attempt to pet her was made after she ate again, but she continued to hiss. The assessment was ended to reduce her stress. Shawna tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
