Freybug
Hello, my name is Freybug. My animal id is #243448. I am a male black dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 6 months 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 4/12/2026, with the surrender reason stated as animal health - will need ongoing vet care.
Freybug is at risk due to behavior concerns. Freybug is a social dog who enjoys affection and treats. Unfortunately, he is having difficulty adjusting to the shelter environment. He has been observed repeatedly jumping, chewing on his kennel walls, and hypersalivating while in his kennel, despite receiving daily enrichment and socialization. Medically, Freybug has dental disease and a wound.

This pet needs emergency placement. Please click here to go to our emergency placement page for more information. Meet Freybug! Freybug was surrendered when his owner could no longer care for him and is now looking for a fresh start. He is a social, energetic boy who approaches readily and enjoys attention from people. He leans in for pets, explores his environment confidently, and shows a playful side once he is comfortable, though he can become very aroused and excitable in new situations. My Ideal Home Freybug will do best in an adult only home that can provide structure, consistency, and ongoing support for impulse control. He needs a calm, predictable environment and a family committed to positive reinforcement training to help him channel his enthusiasm in a productive way. Good with Other Pets? Freybug has shown mixed responses to other dogs, including tense body language and forward, reactive behavior when on leash. Because of this, he is recommended as the only pet in the home and should not visit dog parks. He will need continued work on leash reactivity and controlled, structured environments. Good with Kids? Not recommended for children under 13 due to high arousal, poor impulse control, and leash reactivity observed in care. Things to Know Freybug is a playful, food motivated dog who enjoys interaction but can struggle to settle once excited. He may jump up on handlers, explore counters and doors when stimulated, and becomes very aroused during activity. He responds best to high value rewards like spray cheese and benefits from clear structure, consistent training, and enrichment to help manage his energy. Fun Fact Freybug is one of those dogs who is always "on the move," and when he's happy, he really shows it. Think of him as a little bug of enthusiasm who just needs the right garden to help him grow into his best self.

Summary (5):: 6/19/26: Freybug has tore a hole in his kennel's wall. When the handler approached, he wasn't doing so; Freybug was just heavily panting. 6/13/26: Freybug was at front of kennel on approach and began jumping up when handler was unlocking the kennel door. Freybug allowed handler to leash, exited quickly. The handler worked with Freybug on the ping pong pattern game between snuffle mats, encouraging him to orient without prompting. As he engages more readily, the handler works with him on luring him into a sit in between repetitions. Handler attempts to introduce taking a breath after sit. Freybug is easily leashed and returned to kennel without issue. 6/12/26: Freybug is at the front of his kennel, jumping repeatedly while heavy panting and barking; the handler lures a treat, which he takes with hard pressure, and leashes him. At first, Freybug looks at the kennels next to him, but then looks ahead while pulling hard out the room. Once downstairs, the handler puts Freybug in a leash harness. On the street, Freybug walks with mild to moderate leash tension; he doesn't react to dogs or people. After he relieves himself, the handler brings Freybug into the office. There, two handlers size him for harnesses. They present treats, and he demand barks for them; they reward him once he stops barking. In between, Freybug lays down and stands up a few times; he is heavily panting throughout the process. Afterwards, the handlers remove the harness, and the main handler brings Freybug back upstairs; while walking him to his kennel, Freybug vomits due to him pulling hard. He enters his kennel with ease. 6/8/26: Freybug is at the front of the kennel jumping up and down repeatedly while barking. He pulls hard out of the room and downstairs. Freybug begins choking and gagging due to the pulling. He is taken to the street and placed in a leash harness. He walks with less pulling and has a loose body. Freybug relieves himself a few times. He sits at the handler's feet and takes treats hard. He is walked back to the shelter and pulls hard back to kennel. Freybug is then returned without issue. 6/3/26: While training with handlers, it is noted that Freybug takes treats with moderate pressure.
Summary (6):: 5/28/26: It is reported via white board that Freybug is chewing the wall during AM. 5/27/26: Freybug is jumping up on his kennel door when the handler approaches. He is barking and takes treats. Once the leash is presented, he stays more still to allow leashing. He pulls moderately out of the kennel room and is brought to the office for training. He is aroused and stressed (excessive drooling, panting, hyperactivity). He plays some pattern games with the handler and calms down somewhat. He does some training then lies down briefly. He leans in for pets with multiple handlers. He is lead back to his kennel and gets in willingly. 5/27/26: It is observed that Freybug is hypersalivating and that his chin and neck are wet. 5/21/26: Freybug is laying down quietly in back of kennel, Freybug approaches when handler begins to unlock kennel door. Freybug takes a treat through kennel door gently, he allows easy leashing. Freybug pulls moderately out of kennel room, straight to exit. Freybug is walked on sidewalk, he walks with mild pull, loose body. When verbally cued, he readily approaches handler, jumps on handler with a soft body, in a social manner, solicits contact. He offers a sit when handler shows a treat, he takes treats firmly. After some time, Freybug is walked back to MACC. When outside of MACC driveway, Freybug sees several large dogs walking in and out with staff, she looks but shows no change in body language. Freybug re-enters kennel without issue. 5/14/26: Freybug is at the front of his kennel with a soft body, and demand barks at the handler; he is easily leashed and brought out the room. On the street, Freybug walks ahead with mild to moderate leash tension; he doesn’t react to people; when he sees dogs, he presents a forward, neutral body, but turns to and approaches the handler when they call him. Upon entry, the handler clips their leash and returns Freybug to his kennel. 5/7/26: Freybug is is at the front of his kennel with a soft body; he is easily leashed and brought out the room. Freybug walks ahead with mild leash tension; he doesn't react to dogs or passersby. Ophelia engages with the handler by checking in during the walk; he sits and eats tossed treats. Upon entry, the handler clips their leash and returns Freybug to his kennel with ease. 4/23/26: Freybug is at the front of his kennel with a loose body; he is easily leashed and brought out the room. Freybug walks ahead with mild leash tension; he doesn’t react to dogs or passersby. Freybug demand barks at the handler for treats; they give him some, Freybug does it once more. Upon entry, the handler clips their leash and returns Freybug to his kennel with ease.
Summary (7):: 4/20/26: Freybug is reported to be 'very' dog reactive on the behavior board. -AR 4/20/26: It is reported that Freybug began biting and pulling the door of the pop up crate into the crate and was almost able to get loose. 4/19/26: Freybug was observed to lunge, bite and hold the pop up crate bars when a dog is walked past. 4/18/26: Freybug is at the front of his crate with a wagging tail and soft body. He is easily leashed and pushes out of the crate. He is walked to the street where he relieves himself. He takes treats and allows petting with a loose body. He sniffs around and checks in. He is brought to the assessment room (see notes) then returned to his crate with a tossed treat. 4/18/26 (midday walk): Freybug is at the front of his crate with a loose body; he is easily leashed and brought out the room. On the street, Freybug walks with no leash tension; he doesn’t react to dogs or passersby. Freybug also engages with the handler; he follows the sit command and eats a tossed treat. He also demand barks at them for another treat, which is given. Upon entry, the handler clips their leash and returns Freybug to his crate. 12/18/25: Freybug is off leash in the yard with staff. He is loose wiggly, jumping on handlers in a social manner. He will come to handlers when called and sits for treats. If he does not get treats quick enough, he will jump onto handlers, soft body. He allows petting. He is easily releashed and returned to kennel. 12/11/25: Freybug is at front of kennel, loose wiggly bodied as handler begins to unlock kennel. As kennel door is opened Freybug attempts to push his head out with moderate force, he is easily leashed however. He pulls hard out of kennel, he vomits (mostly kibble) in hallway. Freybug pulls less intense on sidewalk, moderately. He pulls toward areas of interest to sniff and investigate. Freybug takes treats offered, is panting through most of the walk. Freybug is walked to office for assessment, he becomes very wiggly bodied and highly social with staff. After assessment Freybug is re-leashed and walked back to kennel, he baulks just outside of kenel, treats are tossed in and mild leash pressure is used. He enters kennel safely.
Date of intake:: 4/12/2026
Summary:: Allowed handling
Date of initial:: 4/12/2026
Summary:: Soft body
ENERGY LEVEL:: Freybug is described as active and enthusiastic. He will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend only force-free, reward-based training techniques for Freybug.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to his on leash reactivity and poor impulse control we recommend a home with no chidlren. Single Pet Home/ No Dog Parks: Due to on leash reactivity, we recommend a single pet home with no trips to the dog park.
Potential challenges: : Destructive behavior,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Separation anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration
Potential challenges comments:: Separation anxiety/Destructive behavior: Freybug's owner noted he has separation anxiety and destructive tendencies. Positive reinforcement and daily enrichment should be used to manage these behaviors. Please see the handouts on Separation Anxiety and Destructive Behaviors. Mouthiness: Freybug has been observed to take treats with moderate pressure. Freybug has been observed to take treats with a hard mouth. We recommend giving treats with a flat hand and to use force-free, reward-based training methods to teach Freybug to take treats with a softer mouth. Please see handout on Mouthiness. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Freybug is noted to lunge and snap at dogs on leash. During one instance, Fregbug lunged, bit, and held the bars of their pop up crate when a dog was walking by. Positive reinforcement should be used to teach Freybug to check in with his handler when he sees his triggers. Please see the handout on On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration.
