Animal Profile

Cookie

Hello, my name is Cookie. My animal id is #246693. I am a female brown dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 5 years 7 months old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 2/6/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- no time for animal.

Cookie is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Cookie has displayed a concerning level of dog reactivity during her stay in care, including while in the kennel, on a walk, passing kennels, and during a playgroup interaction. Attempts to reduce her stress with kennel covers, but she will occasionally pull it into her kennel. Her previous owner reported similar behaviors towards other dogs. Cookie has intermittently displayed high levels of anxiety while interacting with handlers, but she is accepting of treats. Medically, Cookie is apparently healthy.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some canine body language together! I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. I am excitable and energetic! I will need positive outlets for my energy! I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I need a home where there are no other dogs.

My medical notes are...

Summary:: Although Cookie was surrendered by their previous owner, she is social, outgoing, and playful with familiar dogs but has escalated to lunging at unfamiliar dogs on and off leash. 02/19/26: Cookie was introduced to a novel male dog. Cookie approaches with a forward posture. Following mutual greetings, she offers play bows and tail wagging before climbing and pawing at the gate. Her frustration increases, resulting in snarling and lunging forward. Both dogs are then separated, concluding the interaction.

Summary (7):: 3/2/26: Cookie is at the front of her kennel barking as the handler approaches. She is leashed with ease and will pull lightly out of her kennel but will pass out a few times though there is not much tension on the leash. Once in the office Cookie's collar is clipped with a drag leash and she is free to roam around the room. The handler will give her some spray cheese to lick off the couch while they fit a harness on her. Cookie will lean into the handler and allow petting along her neck and back. After a consent test she will lean in briefly but then picks up a ball. She will then engage with the handler in two toy fetch. After a while, Cookie is walked back on the harness to her kennel with no issue. 2/25: Cookie becomes highly reactive when she sees other dogs pass her kennel. She hard barks, growls, and occassionally muzzle punches the kennel bars if another dog is in close proximity. She is seen racing back and forth to either side of her kennel through the transfer door while she is reacting. Covering her kennel is attempted to reduce her kennel stress, but she intermittently pulls on the cover. 2/19/26: Cookie is standing in her kennel as handler approches. She is able to be quickly leashed and she pulls hard out of kennel and toward the dog in kennel across from hers. She would hard bark with a tense body while trying to turn around to lunge towards the dog in kennel as the handler takes her outside. While on the way to the play yard for play group she would hard stare with a tense body and lunge and vocalize towards dogs passing by. She greets the other dog at the gate with a tense body and begins to hard bark and lunge at the dog. She is able to be taken away and she would continue to hard bark and lunge towards dogs on the way back to her kennel. She is able to quickly enter her kennel with ease. 2/16/26: Cookie is at front of kennel with a neutral body when handler approaches. It takes a little time to leash, using baby talk helped. She is taken from kennel and escorted outside for a walk. Cookie accepts treats and tolerates pets. She is returned to kennel with no issue. 2/10: Cookie is seen barking and growling at other dogs. As the handler is removing a dog from above her kennel, Cookie stands on the kennel door, grumbling as she watches the handler. The handler drops treats into her kennel, and she follows them down as the handler walks away with a little dog. 02/08/26 (Assessment Note): Cookie stands at the front of her kennel and allows leashing with ease. She is brought to the assessment room and eats treats while handlers place a collar and drag leash. Cookie displays signs of FAS, including anxiety and seeking exit. She runs with handler without escalating arousal. She does not respond to knock. During toy portion, she hovers over the toy. Cookie is returned to her kennel safely. Potential challenges comments:: Resource guarding: Cookie is reported to resource guard food by hovering over it with a tense body and growling. Please see the handout on Resource guarding. Destructive behavior: She has destructive tendencies with furniture. We are unaware of what, if any, attempts were made to remedy this behavior but we suggest to future adopters that Cookie will need to be provided with physical and mental stimulation and with a variety of appropriate and engaging chew toys so she can engage in necessary chewing behavior without damage to human objects. Please see handout on Destructive behavior. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Cookie is reported to lunge at unfamiliar dogs on and off leash. Please see handout on On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration. Strength/leash pulling: pulls hard on leash.
