Animal Profile

Basin

Hello, my name is Basin. My animal id is #238114. I am a desexed male brown dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 11 years 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 10/9/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- new baby.

Basin is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Basin arrived at the Care Center as an owner surrender. Basin's previous owner noted that he is a fearful and anxious dog. During handling assessments, Basin is noted to be highly anxious, panting, whining, seeking exit, and unable to settle. Basin's previous owners have also noted that Basin will escalate to defensive behaviors; growling and snapping towards unfamiliar people. Basin's previous owners note that with familiar people we will become social. With staff, Basin has allowed minimal handling. Medically, Basin has dental disease and has started treatment for CIRDC.

ENERGY LEVEL:: Basin is described as medium energy. They will need daily mental and physical activity to keep them engaged and exercised. And we recommend using force-free, reward-based training techniques for them.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4

Recommendations:: No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: No Young Children: Due to Basin's fearful disposition and capacity for defensive aggression, we recommend a home with no children.

Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Anxiety

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/Potential for Defensive Aggression: Basins former owners report that he is shy and generally prefers contact on his own terms, it is also reported he will growl and snap at strangers. It is important to always go slow and give Basin the option to walk away from any social interaction. They should never be forced to approach anything that they are uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Basin choice to approach a new person or thing. They would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period. Anxiety: During his assessment, Basin displayed high levels of anxiety, panting and pacing constantly, whining and crying while seeking exit and being unable to settle at any point throughout the interaction. We recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving him other things to focus on to alleviate his anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training only should be used. Please see handout on Generalized Anxiety.
