Cole
Hello, my name is Cole. My animal id is #183831. I am a desexed male black dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 7 years 7 months 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 4/15/2025.
Cole is at risk due to behavioral reasons. Cole has been observed to be highly dog reactive during his stay at the care center. Noted to bite and tug on the fence when seeing another dog on the other side. While on the street Cole is observed to become tense, posture forward, pull and whine when seeing another dog. While with handlers Cole is observed to have a neutral body. Medically Cole is obese.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some canine body language together! I would do best in a home with only adult humans.

Date of initial:: 4/15/2025
Summary:: Panting and whining
ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Cole so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to on leash reactivity we recommend an adult only home.
Potential challenges: : Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration
Potential challenges comments:: Anxiety: Cole has been observed to be anxious during his stay in the care center. Noted to be whining and chewing on the airline crate during intake. During his assessment Cole was observed to whine and panting throughout the interaction. We have no history on their behavior in a home environment, so we do not know if this will occur outside of the care center. If it does appear in a future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving them other things to focus on to alleviate their anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used. Please see handout on Generalized Anxiety. On Leash Reactivity: During his previous stay in the care center Cole was observed to vocalize and lunge towards another dog while on leash. During his current stay Cole has been observed to whine when seeing another dog. He will escalate to biting and tugging the fence when seeing another dog on the other side. Cole will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
