Animal Profile

Kliff

Hello, my name is Kliff. My animal id is #259592. I am a desexed male brown dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 9 months old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 7/12/2026.

Kliff is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. In the care center, Kliff has shown significant kennel stress, including persistent high-pitched barking, frantically pawing and scratching at the kennel door, heavy panting, dilated pupils, and excessive salivation. These behaviors have continued even during quiet periods and can be difficult to interrupt. Outside of his kennel, Kliff is easy to leash, walks without major issue, and enjoys being outside with staff. Medically, Kliff is apparently healthy.

Kliff's Boroughbreaker writes: Kliff is incredible. Such a solid, easy going, ideal dog. He can run. He can relax. He looks at you like you're the only thing that matters. He is ridiculously goofy, and bouncy and affectionate. He thinks he's a lap dog and he does somehow find a way to fit. He was such a joy and fun boy to spend the day with!! Walking: at first he was amped, but an appropriate length leash and 5 minutes outside and he was an easy walker. He does zig zag but he is so responsive with whoever he is with, he ended up just circling(go forward to enjoy walk, turn around to get treats and repeat) he had us laughing so hard Other dogs: he walked past countless dogs, occasionally looked over or noticed but no reactions, stares, and only pulled when he was in Bushwick bark with another dog. He sat at the park within 15' of dogs and did not care about them! Energy: seamlessly went from walking, to just relaxing with us. Such a good even energy level!! Noises: this boy is unflappable. Trucks, under the subway, door bells - nothing even surprised him. Such a good city boy!! Socialability: absolutely no signs of stranger danger. Seemed to want to meet anyone who wanted to meet him but was also fine just moving on. Laid down at a coffee shop so relaxed and comfortable not bothered by anyone else there. Treats: very food motivated! Seemed to like everything. Training: he knows sit and paw, we started learning down, and he was getting the hang of loose leash walking Play: such an awkward player!! He loves toys and balls but once you to run and play with him (or hold a bully stick for him). He can easily go from zoomies to sitting on your lap relaxed. Quirks: he is so bouncy! He bounces when he is happy, he bounced up on ledges on our walk, he tried to go inside every apartment and stoop, he sits inside your lap, is a big leaner, and has the sweetest face ever. I love him so much and it was such a fun day with him.

Summary:: Due to entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-dog history recorded. 08/10/26 Kliff is introduced to a novel male while off leash. He readily approaches the gate and will sniff the male with a wagging tail. When meeting face to face, both engage in mutual sniffing. Kliff readily approaches and sniffs the male with a neutral frame but becomes a bit wary as the novel male coughs in his face. The novel male's leash is dropped, and Kliff will sniff along his neck briefly. Kliff's leash is dropped and as the novel male walks away, the Kliff will chase after him and jump up, attempting to bite his back (makes mouth contact but does not break skin). Kliff is quickly moved to the neighboring yard before being returned to kennel. 8/5/26: Kliff is introduced to a novel spayed female and approaches the fence with a high wagging tail and loose body. He followed the other dog along the fence line and gave a brief partial play bow before bouncing back up. When let into the yard, Kliff was initially tense when face to face and gave a few displacement play bows. He would disengage and reapproach frequently but was overwhelmed by the other dog's exuberant play style. He would turn his body away and give whale eye but was consistently tolerant of the other dog pushing underneath him and bumping him. At one point the other dog stood up on her hind legs on him and he gave a couple appropriate correction growls/barks and then disengaged without issue. 07/27/26 Kliff is introduced to a novel female while off leash. He readily approaches the gate and displays a loose, wiggly frame. Kliff and the female engage in start/stop play and will chase each other along the yard, mirroring play bows and taking breaks throughout. They play together appropriately for several minutes.

Summary (6):: 10/14: Kliff has been observed to jump up and spin off the back of his kennel. He does not intially see the handler standing next to his kennel as they fix the other dog's kennel card. He then stands on the kennel door, heavily panting before he hits a high-pitched whine. 09/25/26: Kliff is observed to be high pitched barking while on his hind legs, frantically pawing at the kennel door with dilated pupils, heavily panting, and salivating during quiet time. He persists as handler walks past and tosses treats into his kennel. 08/17/26: Kliff is at the front of his kennel as the handler approaches. He is leashed with ease and brought outside for a walk. He pulls moderately throughout the walk, stopping frequently to sniff. He doesn't interact much with the handler. After his walk, he is returned to his kennel without issue. 08/16:(AM) Walking by ISO Kliff was found repeatedly scratching on his kennel door standing on his hind legs. He was repeating this motion, heavy panting, and enlarged pupils. A treat scatter was tossed into his kennel and this interupt the behavior. Staff member walked away and when walking back over after the room was quite. 08/10/26: Kliff is laying down on his bed as the handler approaches. He stands up and the handler is able to leash him with ease and bring him to the yard for play group. After his interaction, Kliff is returned to the building, slightly tense and lip licking. He goes back into his kennel without issue. 8/5/26 (playgroup): Kliff is at the front of his kennel and begins to vocalize as the handler approaches. He is leashed with ease and brought out to the yard where his collar is clipped to the drag leash. He is then free to roam around the yard, and will approach the gate to greet another dog. (see dog-dog for more information) He is then returned to his kennel with no issue. 8/2/26: Kliff is laying down in his kennel as handler approaches. He comes forward to the front as the handler unlocks the door is able to be leashed with ease. He then pulls hard on the way to the behavior room. He attempts to jump up on the pop up crate right outside the room door before entering the room. In the room, he is able to be transferred to a drag leash and is comfortable exploring around for treats. He is able to engage in a snuffle mat and is comfortable sitting to receive treats. He would approach the handlers in the room with a loose and wiggly body and jump up to receive pets. He pulls hard on the way back to his kennel and has to be muscled inside due to not wanting to go in for treats.

Summary (7):: 8/2/26: Handler was in the laundry room and heard a loud rhythmic banging coming from down the hallway. Handler went to investigate the sound and found Kliff on his hind legs digging at the kennel door (B1 K10). Kliff stopped digging when handler entered the room. Handler stayed out of sight to see if Kliff would continue but he did not. Handler also noticed that the transfer door hood had been broken and knocked out of place, potentially from the same digging behavior. 7/27/26 (playground): Kliff is at the front of the kennel panting as the handler approaches. He is leashed with ease and will pull hard out of kennel and to the play yard. His collar is clipped with a drag leash and he will greet another dog at the gate and then play. (see dog-dog for more information) He is then returned to kennel with no issue. 7/19/26: Kliff is standing at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is able to be leashed with ease and he pulls hard on the way outside to the yard. In the yard, he is comfortable exploring around and would search for treats. He is comfortable approaching the handler to receive treats and accepts a few pets. He would stare at dogs that would pass by that were on the sidewalk and is able to be redirected with treats. He pulls hard on the way back to his kennel and is able to enter with no issues. 7/16/26: It is reported via the whiteboard that Kliff pulled extremely hard without stopping for entire walk and then started thrashing when it was time to go back inside building 07/15/26(BA note): Kliff is standing at the front of his kennel and allows the handler to leash him with ease. He pulls hard on the way to the assessment room while passing dogs and people without reacting. Once inside the room, Kliff initially avoids the handlers as they attempt to place a drag leash and collar on him. He is eventually collared while eating cheese and treats. Throughout the assessment, Kliff displays heavy panting, frequently paces the room while seeking the exit, and tolerates handling despite backing away when handlers approach. He completes the run portion without becoming aroused and does not respond to the knock stimulus. During the toy portion, he sniffs the toy before disengaging and walking away. For more information, see Behavioral Assessment.

Date of intake:: 7/12/2026

Summary:: timid but allowed all handling

Date of initial:: 7/14/2026

Summary:: very nervous and tense, shaking, pulls away

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Recommend no dog parks

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to how uncomfortable Kliff is currently with touch and novel stimuli, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time. Recommend No Dog Parks: Due to the concerning behaviors that Kliff has shown during playgroup (see DOG-DOG SUMMARY), we feel that he should not visit dog parks. The Behavior Department recommends that he be socialized in a more controlled setting until his behavior towards other dogs can be further addressed. Reward-based, force-free training can be utilized to help Kliff associate dogs with things he enjoys like toys or treats.

Potential challenges: : Fearful,Anxiety

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful | Anxiety: Kliff has been highly fearful and anxious during his stay in care. During his medical exam, Kliff was tense and shaking; during his handling assessment, he was panting, pacing, seeking exit. It is important to always go slow and give him the option to walk away from any social interaction. Kliff should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. We have no history of his behavior in a home environment, so we do not know if this will occur outside of the care center. If it does appear in a future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving Kliff other things to focus on to alleviate his anxiety. Please see handouts on the decompression period and generalized anxiety.
