Summary:: Due to entering the facility as a stray, there is limited prior dog-to-dog history recorded. Papa came into care with a female intact medium mixed breed dog. 9/2/26: Papa is introduced to a novel intact female and is loose at the fence with mid-high level wags. He sniffed nose to nose through the fence remaining loose and then checked in with handlers. He reapproached and stood up on the fence and the other dog gave a correction bark, Papa was pulled away and was non reactive, remaining loose.

Summary (5):: 9/10/26: Papa is at the front of his kennel with a neutral body; when the handler speaks to him with a soft voice, he presents a wiggly body. the handler feeds Papa treats and he takes them softly. The handler tells him to sit, and Papa takes him time to sit down. They also click their clicker when Papa looks at them. When the handler presents their hand, Papa licks their hand. The handler ends the interaction shortly after.

Summary (6):: 9/07/26: Papa is at the front of the kennel with a neutral body as handler approaches. He is then easily leashed and removed from his kennel, to which he is then taken out to the yard. He has a mild pull forward and would look back as he's walking ahead of the handler. Once out in the yard, he would begin to explore multiple spots of the yard before relieving himself. Handler then walks into a pen, once inside Papa would continue to sniff around. Shortly, he would become tense with a stiff body and stares at the handler. A couple of seconds later, he quickly lunges towards the handlers abdomen and instead catches the handlers sweater. He bites onto the sweater and tugs for a split second before dropping it. Handler then muscles him away and he would then relieve himself again. Shortly after, he becomes stiff and repeats the same behavior. This time a treat is tossed and he ignores the treat. Finally, he lunges again and grabs the handlers sweater - he is then straight armed away and is brought back inside. He is kept on a short leash away from the handler and is muscled into his kennel with no further issues. 9/05/26: Papa is at the front of his kennel with neutral body when handler approaches. He is leashed with treats and taken out of the room. Once in the hallways, Papa frequently looks back at the handler and their treat pouch; he continues walking as handler tossing treats on the ground and has no reaction to pop-up crates or staff members. Once outside, Papa walks slightly ahead of the handler with no leash tension. He discovers certain areas on the street and relieves himself. Papa has no reaction to other dogs or people passerby. Papa allows petting and follows verbal cues. He starts jumping onto the handler and their treat pouch when they stop tossing treats but handler is able to stop him and cue to sit. During return handler is able to pre-clip the leash and bring Papa back into his kennel with no further issues. 09/02/26: Papa is observed in the yard to bite a handlers treat pouch, though with low intensity and briefly hold onto it. Papa released the treat pouch when pulled off by another handler in the yard who was sitting in front of Papa and the handler. Papa did not escalate further and remained outside to conduct dog-dog greets. He was returned without further issue once finished with is interactions. 9/1/26: Papa is at the front of his kennel with a soft body; as the handler leashes him, he frequently jumps up and mouths the leash once. Once he is leashed, the handler drops treats on the ground while exiting, and Papa eats them as he walks out. Papa allows pets from another handler on the street; he walks next to the handler with no leash tension. Upon entry, Papa sniffs a staff member with a wiggly body. He is then returned to his kennel.

Summary (7):: 8/31/26: Papa is at the front of his kennel with a neutral body, he was observed to be eating his own feces. Shortly after, he is then leashed and carried out of his top kennel. Once placed onto the ground, he has a mild pull forward and is taken for his walk. Papa is taken out to the yard and brought inside a pen, once inside the pen Papa would persistently jump up with an open mouth and attempt to bite the handler. This behavior continues and handler has to straight arm him away multiple times. Treats are tossed to the side, which he quickly takes. Shortly after, he jumps up and bites the handler treat pouch and manages to pull out poop bags. Afterwards, handler decides to keep him muscled away and bring him back inside. Once inside, he is then easily carried and placed back into his kennel with ease. 8/29/26: Papa is at the front of his top kennel with loose and wiggly body when handler approaches. He is easily leashed, picked up (allows with ease) and taken out of the room. He walks slightly ahead of the handler with mild pulling in the hallways and has no reaction to pop-up crates or staff members. Once outside, Papa sniffs certain areas and relieves himself. When he gets to the street, Papa continues walking slightly ahead of the handler with no pulling on the loose leash. He doesn't react toward dogs, people or other stimuli on the street. Papa is social with handler, receptive to treats (takes with hard pressure), allows petting and follows the handler during the walk. His body remains soft with relaxed face. Once walk is done, Papa is taken to the Canine Behavior office for the assessment (see notes). Upon return handler is able to pre-clip the leash and bring Papa back into his kennel with ease. 8/10/26: Papa was standing at the front of his crate where he was easily leashed and taken for a street walk. While walking he walked next to handler with a slack leash and a neutral body. He kept looking up at handler trying to solicit treats. Handler had him perform sit and would then offer a treat. He was returned to kennel with no issue

Summary:: Wiggly and seeking attention. Very food motivated.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Papa so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Papa's poor bite inhibition and low threshold for arousal, we recommend an adult only home. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges comments:: Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition: Papa is noted to take treats with hard pressure and grab handler treat pouch. Continued training should focus on reinforcing gentle treat-taking, rewarding calm behavior around food rewards, and teaching appropriate impulse control skills to reduce grabbing and improve overall mouth manners. Please see the handout on Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression/Arousal: Papa has been observed to have a very low threshold for arousal, noted to mouth handlers leash and bite their treat pouch. He has also been observed to jump towards the handler's leg with an open mouth. Another instance papa lunged towards the handlers abdomen and caught the handlers sweater instead, this behavior was repeated again during the walk. Positive reinforcement training should be used to teach Papa to remain calm during arousing situations. If they begin to escalate, people should pause the interaction, and create distance from the trigger. Pattern games such as 1-2-3 treat and the cue “mat” can be used to reinforce calm behaviors.
