I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 2/7/2018, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- homeless.

Freckles is being placed at risk due to behavior, New Hope Only determination. Freckles is overwhelmed in the shelter and is uncomfortable with touch and new stimuli. Freckles does have dental disease and should go to a partner/home that can manage that care.

Freckles was very loose bodied and was running around greeting people approaching. She allowed us to pick her up and pass her around. She allowed us to collar her and take her picture. The Entire time she kept a loose wiggly body.

Basic Information:: Freckles is a black, white, brown small breed dog that is estimated to be 3 Years old. Her previous owner found her as a stray 3 years ago and took her in. She stayed with them for the last 3 years until she had to move

How is this dog around strangers?: Freckles is shy around strangers for a few minutes and will warm up to people very quickly.
How is this dog around children?: Freckles lived with children and an infant she was very relaxed and playful around them.
How is this dog around other dogs?: Freckles lived with a small breed dog and was very friendly and affectionate with her.
How is this dog around cats?: Freckles lived with 2 cats in her previous home. She did not interact with them too much but would be friendly when she was around them.

Other Notes:: Freckles is not bothered by loud noises. She enjoys baths and being groomed for long periods of time. She is used to people trimming her nails and will stand still for it. She enjoys being held and will jump up asking to be picked up.

For a New Family to Know: Freckles is an affectionate dog that enjoys lying around the house and following people around if shes looking to play. She likes to play with balls rope and squeaky toys. She is used to being indoors all day and is very house trained. She prefers dry food. She does like to go out for walks and will run around with other dogs.

Summary:: In the assessment room, Freckles did not approach the assessor and attempted to flee when the assessor approached her. She was very tense during handling, and growled during tag, so the rest of the handling portion of the assessment was omitted.

Recommendations comments:: No children: Due to how uncomfortable Freckles is currently with touch and novel stimuli, we feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time. Place with a New Hope partner: Freckles has not acclimated well to the kennel environment. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Freckles previous owner described her as shy with new people. At the care center, she has been very fearful, snapping and growling in her kennel and at times outside of her kennel. It is important to always go slow and give Freckles the option to walk away from any social interaction. Freckles should never be forced to approach anything that she is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Freckles' choice to approach a new person or thing. Freckles would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to her new surroundings.
