Tru Fu
Hello, my name is Tru Fu. My animal id is #248443. I am a desexed male black cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 7 years 1 months 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 2/26/2026.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormTru Fu is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.
Let's get to know each other a bit more...

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! It is unknown if I have ever lived with other animals or children. I am looking for a home with a patient person. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I will flourish in a calm environment and a low-traffic home. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. A volunteer writes: Tru Fu's favorite toys and games, his preferred treats and places to nap are some of the missing puzzle pieces in our work to make the shelter more comfortable for him. It's been a bit of a guessing game so I went to ask Tru Fu and he swiftly said no to all when I did. Tru Fu was left on his own for quite some time after his guardian passed away. Brought here by police, his rocky beginnings seem to have only been exacerbated by the constant hum at the shelter. Sometimes we have to sit with our feelings as we go through whatever it is we are, so I didn't take it any particular way when Tru Fu told me no but rather I tried to put myself in his paws. Except I don't think even Tru Fu wants to be in his paws right now. I think somewhere in his kitty heart he wants someone to ask him about his favorite treats, toys, and places to nap though, but I think what Tru Fu wants most of all is for someone to really listen to his answers.

Details on my behavior are...
Behavior Condition: 4. Orange
Upon intake Tru Fu was fearful with staff and allowed no handling. He was hissing/growling but accepted a Churru.
KNOWN HISTORY:: Tru Fu was brought in with limited information on his behavior history in a home environment. He has previously lived with 1 adult.
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 3/11/26 FB58 In his den and hidden from view, he cannot be coaxed out and I don't push for pets. Instead I leave some dry treats and a catnip toy sprayed with feliway. When I check back the treats have not been eaten. 3/13/26 FB58 In den and hidden - he begins to growl as the door is opened and reaches his paw out quickly to swat at the stick I am using to close his portal. He then lunges at the front of his den multiple times and hisses with a tense face and body, eyes wide and dilated, ears tilted back, as I lift the den cover. He is hunched with his tail wrapped tight around his back feet and one of his front legs poised to lunge forward. I spend some time speaking to him and wait for him to pull his paw back and settle somewhat, and/or slow blink. We make some progress, he has yet to show any interest in the squeeze up treat cup I had placed near the portal opening. As i replace his den cover, he hisses and grumbles but doesn't lunge. He may be a candidate for the den cover removal for defensively aggressive cats. 3/17/26 FB06 Tru Fu is in his den out of view low growling before the door is opened. Opening the door, Itoss in some dry treats to try and lure him out but he had no interest as he continues to low growling. I then use the scratcher to push the treats closer to the portal He hisses, lunges his head out and spits and swats with force. His eyes are wide. As I ended the interaction I closed the door and just spoke softly to him. His eyes remained wide and his ears were flattened. 8/23/26 FB61 Lying in cat den upon approach, body and face hidden from view. He hisses when I open the kennel door to offer treats and a catnip toy so I do not push further petting at this time. Not interested in interaction. 3/26/26 FB61 We have begun a behavior modification plan called the "Fraidy Cat Club", an Operant Conditioning training method where an unpleasant stimulus is removed when a desired behavior is observed. In this case, the negative stimulus is the presence of feline behavior staff; as soon as an improvement is noted, staff will "mark" the behavior with a sweet "good boy/girl" and then leave. The idea is that the cat learns to relax because every time they do, they "operate" on the stimulus causing it to be removed. This is currently their "reward" or "motivator" since they are too nervous to accept any other forms of enrichment. In time, we hope that the cat will improve enough so then we can transition to positive reinforcement. 3/28/26 FB20 Tru Fu is in his den hissing. After a few hissing repetitions, he pauses. Handlers marks and leaves. 4/01/26 FB61 In cat den upon approach, body and face tense. He hisses initially (softer than usual) and I wait until he stops hissing before I mark with a "good boy" and walk away. Did well! Appears to be responding to fraidy cat program. GAN
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Shy ,Timid,Skittish,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period
Potential challenges comments:: A bite incident occurred on 2/26/26 when an NYPD officer was bit by Tru Fu as he was rescuing the cat from the owner’s apartment after he was alone in the apartment. He received a puncture to the left hand. Treated at Wyckoff Heights Medical Center.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only
RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home
Recommendations comments:: Due to the behavior seen in shelter and needing a longer time to warm up, the behavior team feels Tru Fu would do best in an adult-only home where they would be able to acclimate in a calm environment.
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: 3/1/26 Upon approach, Tru Fu was inside the den out of view. As the kennel door opened, the scratcher was slowly offered outside the portal door of the den. He began to low growl. As the den cover was lifted he was sitting at the back of the den with wide eyes and his tail wrapped tightly around his body. As the scratcher moved closed to his body he hissed and swatted the scratcher, even attempting to bite it. He tolerated some pets along his side with the scratcher as he continued to low growl, hiss and swatted at the scratcher. No pick up was attempted at this time. 3/6/26 Upon meeting with Tru Fu after his bite quarantine, he is laying at the back of his cubby with a tense face and body, eyes wide and dilated, and ears tilted. He low growls and hisses as the cubby door is opened and then swats and lunges at the scratcher tool as it is slowly offered out to him. He lunges again towards the front of the cubby and hisses when some dry treats are offered. The interaction is ended to prevent further escalation as well as increased FAS. Tru Fu is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat, lunge, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment, and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
