This pet needs emergency placement. Please click here to go to our emergency placement page for more information. Cartier needs emergency placement. She is highly social and engages in training. She if offered daily in kennel enrichment to make her comfortable but despite staff efforts, Cartier is displaying deteriorating behavior. Recently, she was observed chewing a hole in her kennel wall. Medically, Cartier is healthy. What my friends at ACC say about me: I am finding the shelter a bit overwhelming. Outside one-on-one I am a great big cuddle bug. I am finding the shelter a little overwhelming, but when it's just you and me and some peace and quiet you'll see what a love bug I am. I'm described as social, affectionate, active, playful, and vocal. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. Please check here for updated adoption hours. A volunteer writes: Cartier might just be the best canine cuddler in all of Brooklyn! Whenever we're out on a walk she is eager to lean in for pets and ear scratches, and isn't afraid to dole out a sloppy canine kiss or two. An energetic and curious girl, she loves a good long walk with lots of sniffing opportunities, so I think she would thrive in a home with an active person/people to take her on walks, hikes, and other active adventures with lots of pats and couch cuddles afterwards. Come on down to Brooklyn ACC to meet this special green-eyed girl (with two ears that perpetually go in different directions :)) -- she's going to bring so much joy and fun to her future person or people!

Summary:: friendly in kennel

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have limited history on Cartier so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. However, she will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3

Recommendations:: No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Cartier's anxiety and escalation to barking and lunging in her previous home, we feel she may find children overwhelming. As a result, we recommend she be placed in a home without children.

Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,House soiling,Handling/touch sensitivity,Anxiety

Potential challenges comments:: HOUSE SOILING: Cartier is reported to not be house-trained. Please see the handout on House Soiling. HANDLING/ TOUCH SENSITIVITY/ FEARFUL/POTENTIAL FOR DEFENSIVE AGGRESSION: Cartier has been moderately fearful in the care center, shying away from unexpected contact, sights, or sounds. Her previous owner stated that she has been social with strangers and visitors but there were occassions where she was shy and escalated to hard barking and lunging. She has also head whipped when her feet are touched. It is important to always go slow and give her the option to walk away from any social interaction. Cartier should never be forced to approach anything that she is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be her choice to approach a new person or thing. Cartier would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to her new surroundings. See handout on Handling/touch sensitivity and Fearful/potential for defensive aggression ANXIETY: Cartier appears anxious at the care center, panting, pacing, and seeking exit during her assessment. We have no history on her behavior in a home environment, so we do not know if this will occur outside of the care center. If it does appear in a future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving her other things to focus on to alleviate her anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training only should be used. See handout on Generalized Anxiety.
