Atlas
Hello, my name is Atlas. My animal id is #210557. I am a male black dog at the Staten Island Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 4 months 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 9/21/2024.
Atlas is at risk for behavior reasons. Atlas was initially very fearful entering the care center. He has warmed up and adjusted nicely remaining social with staff and volunteers. Atlas has begun to be more reactive passing kennels and is a bite risk to other dogs when leaving the adoptions room. He has also attempted to climb out of the yard when another dog is in the neighboring yard. Despite these behaviors shown, he has done well greeting dogs through a gate. Medically, Atlas was underweight and had areas of alopecia on intake.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful potential for defensive aggression we recommend a home with no children.
Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Social hyperarousal,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Leash-biting
Potential challenges comments:: Resource guarding: When attempting to take the toy from Atlas, he body blocks the handler. This shows that he has potential to resource guard items he finds of a high value. We recommend never removing anything directly from Atlas but always trading for something of an equal or higher value. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Basic manners/poor impulse control: Atlas lacks basic manners and is quick to jump up on staff members. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Leave it", "Sit/Stay", "Down" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners and Impulse Control. Social hyperarousal: Atlas becomes aroused during socialization. He can become persistently jumpy and has to be slowed down. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used to teach Atlas to remain calm when people and other exciting things are around. He should be rewarded with treats when calm. Please see handout on Arousal. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Atlas was initially highly fearful when he entered the care center. He is avoidant of the slip lead and has been observed to back away, bark, growl and shorten his commissure as staff attempt to leash him. During his first socialization session he was huffing and growling at a staff member, but he is beginning to warm up to staff. He requires a slow considerate approach. He is motivated by high value foods which is helping him adjust to the care center. Please see handout on Fearful Potential for Defensive Aggression. Leash-biting: After his assessment, when the slip lead is secured around Atlas' neck, he begins to jump up biting the leash. He has a soft body and once they begin to move, he disengages. Should this become problematic in his new home, we recommend walking him with treats or toys to distract him from biting at the leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners.
