Clyde

Hello, my name is Clyde. My animal id is #244000. I am a desexed male tan dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 5 years 2 months 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 12/18/2025.

Pre-Screener Form

Clyde is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. In the care center, he displays persistent barking and pulling toward dogs becoming increasingly hard to refocus at times and settle during interactions. He is noted to hard bark at another dog during his walk and redirect on to handler biting they pants leg, not breaking skin. Clyde has also grabbed and held onto an item while coming back from his walk. Clyde is social with staff and engages during training sessions but is having difficultly with the stressful environment, also hypersalivating in his kennel due to the loud shelter environment. Medically, Clyde is apparently healthy.

Clyde is one of my favorite dogs for walks and interactions. Clyde does hard-barks and reacts to dogs he sees; but when none are around and we're in the yard, he's just a big soft marshmallow. Galloping up to me, with his tail happily flapping behind him and an expression of pure excitement on his face, he looks so cute and goofy that I just have to chuckle. He loves to be pet - long back rubs, butt scratches, ear and cheek-rubs - he'll gladly take them all! My favorite thing though is when he sits next to me and leans in, lightly wiggling into my legs, as he soaks up all the attention I shower on him. Clyde also knows "sit", enjoys munching on treats, and is very housebroken. Clyde may not be comfortable around dogs, but he's right at home (and happiest) with people. Clyde arrived at the care center as a stray. Clyde in the care center has displayed a high level of reactivity, and has been highly stressed in his kennel. Clyde has bit onto another staff members pants leg after reacting due to a dog on his walk, and each time when removed from kennel Clyde's neck is covered in saliva due to his hypersalivating in kennel. Clyde is highly social with staff, and loves to lay down and play with toys. As a result, we recommend Clyde is placed with one of our New Hope Partners.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): We reccomend Clyde be placed in a home with No children (under 13) due to his fearfulness. Single-pet home/Recommend no dog parks: Due to the concerning behaviors that Clyde has shown during playgroup (see DOG-DOG SUMMARY), we feel that he should not visit dog parks and be the only resident dog. The Behavior Department recommends that he be socialized in a more controlled setting until his behavior towards other dogs can be further addressed. Reward-based, force-free training can be utilized to help Clyde associate dogs with things he enjoys like toys or treats. Place with a New Hope partner: Due to Clyde's reactivity and redirection onto staff, we recommend he is placed with one of our New Hope Partners.

Potential challenges: : Fearful,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Bite history (human)

Potential challenges comments:: Anxiety/Fearful: Cyde is noted to become fearful when taken out of his kennel for walks. During his handling assessment, Clyde displayed pin back ears and whale eyes but quickly warmed up to handlers, showing improved comfort with patient, gentle interaction. Recommended interventions include slow approaches, pairing handling with high-value treats, and confidence-building exercises such as treat-and-retreat and enrichment activities to encourage relaxation. Please see the handout on the decompression period and generalized anxiety. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: At the care center, Clyde has been observed to react to other dogs on leash, lunging towards, and grumbling at times. He may need positive reinforcement and reward-based training to teach him to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend using a front-clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration.
