Lydia
Hello, my name is Lydia. My animal id is #225164. I am a desexed female white kitten at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 5 months 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 4/21/2025.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormLydia is on the At Risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She appears to be under socialized and has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping an under socialized young cat adjust to strangers.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I would do best in a home with only adult humans.

KNOWN HISTORY:: Lydia was brought in as a stray, there is no known information on her behavior history in a home environment. Upon intake cat was scared, curling in on itself, hissing and hiding behind mom. Staff was able to move to carrier and take picture but minimal handling was done. Unable to scan or collar.
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 4/25/25 FB61 Lying in back of kennel, face and body tense. She stares at me with dilated pupils, body completely frozen as I open the kennel door and she begins to rapid breath and back away when I place some treats near her. I slow-blink, speak to her softly and end the session. 4/29/25 FB61 In back of kennel, body relaxed and ears forward upon initial approach. She tenses, flattens her ears and wraps her tail around her body as the kennel door opens. She hisses when pet on the head with the scratcher, ears flattening completely and she tolerates further petting while growling. She doesn't eat the squeeze-ups offered during our session however I think she might when I'm out of the room because her food bowls are empty. 5/01/25 FB61 Lying in cat bed, face tense, ears forward and tail wrapped around feet. I know she is very under socialized and doesn't accept treats during interactions so I Spend the first half of our session using the bubble gun as visual enrichment. Her face softens and she does watch the bubbles curiously with her eyes bright. When I attempt petting today just to see what would happen she hisses and flinches hard, ears assuming an airplane wing position. Very fearful. May benefit from play therapy. 5/5/25 FB79 On top of her kuranda bed, Lydia lays with her body very relaxed and lifts her head when she hears me speak; she has soft eyes and forward ears however she hisses when i slowly start to reach in and her ears tilt. Lydia continues to harshly hiss as my hand gets closer and her ears end up flat to her head as she remained laid but lifts her paw as she watches me closely for any further movement. 05/07/25 FB58 Lying on her kuranda bed with a tense face and body, eyes wide and dilated and ears tilted flat to the side. She hisses and growls as I open the cage door and place a tray with stew near her. She doesn't show interest so I lightly toss some dry treats near and pause in between to slow blink. She flinches and hisses each time but slowly begins to slow blink at times and sniffs at them, eating a few (I click to mark each time she does). I have to stand sideways and look slightly away from her before she moves and begins to eat from the tray with the stew in it. I play some kittens purring and sit for a little bit and watch her, slow blinking at times. 05/12/25 FB58 At the front of the cage and eating her food but runs to the back to her bed and hisses and low growls when she sees me. I play cat purring sounds and sit with her slow blinking until she settles down into a tense loaf. I then slowly place the scratcher tool near her and leave it there - she tenses and hisses and I repeat, sitting and waiting until she settles again. I begin to pet her head and between her eyes with the tool softly until she settles into it, she hisses at times but begins to slightly close her eyes. Once she is used to this sensation, I run the tool from a pet on her head to one pass along her body and back to her head. GAN
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Timid,Skittish,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,Kitten socialization,New home adjustment period
Potential challenges comments:: Please see behavior flyer for more information. Lydia is a kitten that has never been appropriately socialized to humans and will require additional time and effort to build positive associations and interact comfortably with humans.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only
RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home
Recommendations comments:: Due to the behavior seen in shelter and needing a longer time to warm up, the behavior team feels Lydia would do best in an adult-only home where they would be able to acclimate in a calm environment.
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: 4/24/25 Lydia was lying towards the back of her kennel as the assessor approached, body and face tense and tail curled around feet. Lydia made eye contact with dilated pupils when spoken to and she backed away a few inches as the kennel door opened. Lydia tolerated petting along her head and body while flattening her ears, lowering herself further and backing away with her tail wrapped around her body even tighter. Pick up was not attempted at this time to reduce stress. 5/23/25 Sitting near the front of the cage and tenses, hissing as she runs back to the bed under the kuranda bed at the back with a hunched body, ears flat, low growling and hissing. After a moment, she settles down into a tense loaf as she continues to low growl and hiss when treats are placed near her, on edge. When the scratcher tool is slowly offered out to her, she hisses and leans forward slightly to sniff before growling and nipping at the tool as the assessor attempts to pet, before she flees to the other side of the double. Once the assessor is finally able to make contact with the tool, she is barely tolerant with a tense face and body. The assessor returns later wearing a bite glove and closes the portal to see how she reacts when she can't flee - She is avoidant and hisses and low growls, tense body and whale eyes, hunched and the tip of her tongue sticks out as she hisses/growls. Contact is able to be made and she doesn't attempt to bite but is ended immediately as she is clearly uncomfortable. Treats are left for her and she begins to eat once the assessor turns away. Lydia appears to be fearful and may not have had much human interaction up to this point. She is very apprehensive of people and while showing no aggressive behaviors, she does attempt to flee and avoid human contact. During the assessment she displayed distance increasing behaviors and would benefit from extra socialization. The behavior team feels that due to the level of FAS she displays when petting/handling is attempted, placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
