Storm
Hello, my name is Storm. My animal id is #213396. I am a desexed female brown dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 5 months 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 3/26/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- landlord won't allow (nycha).
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormStorm is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Storm was returned to the shelter due to housing concerns. Her previous owner noted that Storm has a bite history to another dog, Storm's previous owner reported several years ago, when in a dog park, a similar sized dog to Storm bit him (Storm's owner) on the leg. Storm proceeded to then bite the dog on the neck, held on and shook. Storm released when told to 'drop it'. Storm is also reported to resource guard her toys and treats. In shelter Storm has been reported to be on leash reactive to dogs during walks and when passing kennels. Storm has begun to show signs of kennel deterioration as well - scratching consistently at her transfer door, and panting persistently in kennel. With staff and in a recent handling assessment Storm has been highly social with staff; approaching handlers readily and allowing all contact with a wiggly body. Medically, Storm is noted to be underweight but is otherwise apparently healthy.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Storm's resource guarding and overall anxiety, we recommend she goes to an adult-only home. SINGLE-PET HOME/RECOMMEND NO DOG PARKS: Due to Storm's dog reactivity shown while in care, we recommend she avoid all dog parks. We also advise she be the only pet in the home due to said reactivity. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.
Potential challenges: : House soiling,Resource guarding,Destructive behavior,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Bite history (dog)
Potential challenges comments:: House Soiling: Storm is is noted to have accidents in the house, and will likely need guidance with house training. We recommend positive reinforcement, reward-based training only. See handout on House Soiling. Resource guarding: Storm will guard toys, food, and treats from other dogs. She will hover over them with a tense body, and progress to barking and growling. She should be taught the "drop" cue and trade-up games to help manage this. Destructive behavior: Storm is noted to to be destructive in the home. Storm will need to be provided with physical and mental stimulation and with a variety of appropriate and engaging chew toys so she can engage in necessary chewing behavior without damage to human objects. Bite history (dog): Storm and her owner were at a dog park. A dog about Storm's size bit the owner on the leg. Storm bit the dog on the neck, and shook. The owner told her to "drop it" and Storm released. Blood was drawn both on the owner and the other dog, but the client did not exchange information with the other owner. The owner stated the other dog had clear puncture wounds, but they did not appear life-threatening. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: During her current stay in the care center Storm has been observed to lunge towards the neighboring dogs in the kennel room. Storm is reported to be on-leash reactive while on walks. We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior. She will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach her to look at you rather than other dogs.
