Kairo
Hello, my name is Kairo. My animal id is #231930. I am a desexed male black dog at the Staten Island Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 7/13/2025.
Kairo is at risk for behavior reasons. Kairo is highly anxious in kennel, and when removed for walks he has been escalating to jumping and snapping at staff. Once out of the building he is tolerant of pets, can pull hard on leash but is manageable on a harness and enjoys time out. He appears housebroken. Medically he has dental disease but is otherwise healthy.

Medically he has dental disease but is otherwise healthy. Kairo is a 3-year-old male dog who came to us as a stray, so his past is a mystery. In our care, Kairo has shown signs of anxiety and tends to be aloof with new people and situations. He tolerates gentle pets but can become reactive when being removed from his kennel, so he'll need someone with the patience and experience to help him navigate these challenges. Once outside, Kairo begins to relax and enjoys his time stretching his legs and exploring his surroundings. Kairo is searching for a calm, adult-only home with a confident and experienced dog guardian who can provide structure, understanding, and ongoing support. With the right person, we believe Kairo has the potential to form a deep and lasting bond. If you're looking to make a meaningful difference in a dog's life and have the experience to help Kairo thrive, we'd love to hear from you.

Summary:: 7.16.2025 Kairo met an unaltered large mixed breed through a gate. Kairo approached with a neutral body and greeted the other dog before walking away.
Summary (6):: 7.29 Kairo is at the front of his kennel when approached. He is easily leashed and taken out of the kennel. Once out of the kennel, Kairo turns towards the staff and jumps up towards them with an open mouth and exuberant body. Staff are able to stiff arm the leash and walk Kairo out of the room where he recovers. Kairo is brought to the yard and put on a drag leash. Kairo explores the yard and occasionally approaches staff, where he accepts gentle pets. Kairo is easily leashed and returned to his kennel. 7/24: Kairo is jumping up and barking at kennel front on approach. He is easily leashed and once out of kennel jumps up at handler. He continues into meet and greet, turns and jumps at handler again. After a few steps are taken forward, he lunges, snapping at the underside of the handler's arm. She holds him away from herself and he pulls through the hall. At the door, a quick touch consent test is performed, and he remains neutral looking out the glass. A rope harness is fastened, and he is brought on a walk. He is aloof investigating scents. Once he relieves himself a treat is offered, and he refuses. They walk back to shelter he allows all handling to return to kennel. Afternoon- Kairo is taken out of the kennel and jumps up as he is walking out of the room towards the handlers hand. Once in the hallway, his body softens and he walks out of the building. He is taken around the perimeter and begins exploring. Once in the yard, he runs back and forth and leans into the handler for pets on his head and back. After session is over, he is taken back to the kennel without any issues
Summary (7):: 7/23: Kairo is easily leashed and pulls to the door. He is rope-harnessed and brought on a walk. He walks nicely on the harness, remaining aloof, investigating scents. When we approach a car parked on the gravel, he looks underneath with his elbows bent. He is offered treats, but refuses. He allows for the harness to be undone & tolerates pets down his back. He returns without issue. He is later seen at kennel front wagging tail, open mouth and takes a treat from the same handler. 7.15 Kairo is at the front of his kennel. He is easily roped and brought to the yard. In the yard, Kairo would wander and explore the yard, but would whine and began to stress drool. He would approach staff and sit next to them on the bench, accepting all pets as they did so. Kairo continued to whine when not being pet. Kairo is easily leashed and brought back to the kennel. 07.14 Kairo is in the front of his kennel with a loose wagging tail. He is easily leashed and pulls at the end of the leash until leaving the building. Once on the street, Kairo begins to walk with slack in the leash with a loose body. He explores the grass and accepts treats when offered. He is easily returned to the kennel.

ENERGY LEVEL:: In the care center Kairo has a medium energy level.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to lack of basic manners and low threshold for arousal, we recommend a home with no children.
Potential challenges: : Anxiety,Strength/leash pulling,Low threshold for arousal
Potential challenges comments:: Anxiety: Kairo appears anxious at the care center, whining when in the yard. We have no history on his behavior in a home environment, so we do not know if this will occur outside of the care center. If it does appear in a future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving him other things to focus on to alleviate her anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training only should be used. Please see handout on anxiety. Strength/leash pulling: His adopter must be prepared and able to handle a dog of this strength. It is recommended that he be walked on a front clip harness or head halter, which help diminish his strength through leverage, and that he be trained using positive reinforcement, reward based training to not pull on leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners. Low threshold for arousal: When Kairo exits his kennel, he becomes over-aroused and jumps up at handlers. Kairo is a strong dog and overarousal can tip into aggression. We recommend interacting with him in a calm manner to prevent an incident. Please see handout on Arousal.
