Sunny

Hello, my name is Sunny. My animal id is #241702. I am a desexed male black dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 5 years 2 months 3 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 11/14/2025.

Sunny is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. In the care center, Sunny has shown handling sensitivity during leashing, including growling, snapping toward the lead, and tensing. Sunny is social with out of his kennel, but is struggling in the care center despite best efforts to keep him comfortable. Medically, Sunny is apparently healthy.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some canine body language together! I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. Not only do I pull at heart strings, but I also pull on leash! I will need someone to help me with my leash manners. I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. My adoption fee has been sponsored by a generous donor!.

My medical notes are...

Summary:: Due to entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 11/17/25 Sunny is introduced at the gate to a female helper dog while off leash at the care center. Sunny approaches the gate with a stiff body and will walk away. Sunny returns with wide-dilated eyes and a tight, fast wagging tail, whining, appearing conflicted. He walks away from the gate, seeking attention from the handler in his pen. Sunny is returned to kennel, concluding the interaction.

Summary (6):: 2/5/26: Sunny is standing at front of kennel when handler approaches. As handler unlocks kennel, Sunny stands up and puts his paws on the kennel door. Handler is able to easily leash Sunny and escort him to the behavior training room. Once in room Sunny finds a lick mat with cheese and spends a lot of time with that enrichment. After Sunny moves around the room and greets the others that are present, accepting treats and pets from everyone. He is returned to kennel with no issue. 2/3/26: Sunny is reported to lung and growl at the kennel when handlers attempt leash him. Once leash he is reported to become tense and snap towards the lead. 1/31/26: Sunny is approached in kennel and is hard barking and growling, but when coaxed will soften a bit when leashed. Sunny will be weary of the leash, but will follow treats on the ground and be leashed. Sunny appears conflicted when coaxed, looking back at the handler lip licking but tolerating his neck begin pet slowly. Sunny is brought on a brief walk due to the very cold weather, and when being brought back immediately pulls back into his kennel. 1/29/26: Sunny is noted to become tense and snap at the handler during his am and pm walks when attempts are made to leash him and take him out on a walk. When finally leashed, he will remain tense. 1/23/26: Sunny greets handler at front of kennel with a loose and wiggly body. He is easily leashed. Once he is pulled from kennel he pulls hard aiming for the neighboring kennel. While on walk Sunny maintained a neutral body, but would slightly tense when he saw another dog and would stare but was easily distracted with treats. He pulls moderately on walk. Sunny was able to be returned to kennel with no issue. 1/17/26: Sunny is standing at the front of her kennel as handler approaches. She is able to be leashed, and she pulls hard out of kennel and pulls towards the dog in kennel next to her. She is able to be taken away and is then taken outside for a walk. On the walk, she would pull head with neutral body frame and stare at dogs as they passed by. She is able to approach the handler to receive treats and had no reactions to people. She pulls hard on the way back to her kennel, and tries to pull towards the dogs in kennels before entering her kennel with no issues.

Summary (7):: 1/15: ACS staff report that during a walk Sunny lunged and grumbled at another dog that was some distance away up the street. The handler kept moving back to the building and held Sunny a bit of a shorter leash but Sunny would constantly turn back to look for the other dog while still grumbling. 12/19/25: Sunny is at the front of his kennel with a neutral body and wagging tail, is easily leashed and walked out of kennel. Sunny will begin to nibble at the leash when being walked out, and does not pull. Sunny engages with the handler offering sit cues, checking in constantly and given treats when checking in. Sunny will go between offering sit and exploring his surroundings, and when passing dogs tenses but does not escalate past that. Sunny allows petting along his neck but lip licks when his rear is touched. Sunny is brought back to kennel with no issue. 12/04/25: Suny is noted to hard bark , growl and lunge at handlers. 11/28/25: Sunny is siting at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He comes forward to the front is able to be leashed with ease. He is then taken to the behavior room for his assessment. He would jump up on the handler along the way. In the room after the handler knocks on the closet door, he becomes mouthy and starts heavy panting and trying to seek exit. He then begins to bite at the leash while siting by the door. Please see behavior assessment notes for more details. He is able to return back to his kennel with no further issue. 11/17 (PG): Sunny is stretched out in his kennel when a handler approaches. He comes to the front and is easily leashed. Sunny is brought to the yard for playgroup. Once his interaction is complete, he is easily leashed and returns to the kennel without issue. 11/15/25 (Assessment): Sunny is standing in the middle of his kennel with a loose frame as the handler approaches. He comes up to the front as the handler opens the door and they are able to leash him with ease. Sunny will then walk to the behavior office, pulling moderately. Sunny's assessment is postponed due to FAS, As he is being returned to his kennel, he freezes at the door, tenses up and low growls while displaying slight whale eye as he tracks the handler who is walking around him to take him back to the behavior office. Once back in the office, the second handler places a second rope on him and guides him into the kennel. He is secured safely. (See assessment for more information)

Summary:: id not allow much handling as would low growl and became very tense during any handling

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Sunny so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4

Recommendations:: No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Sunny’s fearfulness and anxiety in the care center, we recommend he be placed in an adult-only home

Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting,Strength/leash pulling,Kennel presence

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/potential for defensive aggression/Anxiety: Sunny gives clear warnings when he is uncomfortable and does seem to choose to avoid or retreat when given the opportunity, but if prevented from moving away there is the potential to escalate to higher-level warning behaviors and possible fear-based aggression. It is important to move slowly with Sunny, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow Sunny to initiate interactions with new people. He should never be forced to greet or interact if he is not comfortable and soliciting attention. Sunny would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings. See handouts on Decompression Period and Fearful and Defensive Aggression. Leash-Biting: Sunny occasionally grabs the leash during walks but can be redirected with treats. This behavior suggests mild frustration or playfulness, and management should focus on consistent redirection to appropriate behaviors and reinforcing calm walking. Please see the handout on Leash-Biting. Strength / Leash Pulling: Sunny pulls hard on the leash, requiring structured leash training. Techniques such as teaching loose-leash walking, using positive reinforcement for calm movement, and incorporating frequent breaks can help reduce pulling. Please see the handout on Strength / Leash Pulling. Kennel presence/barrier frustration: Sunny is noted to growl and lung when leash attempts are made.
