Ares
Hello, my name is Ares. My animal id is #209947. I am a male orange tiger cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 2 months 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 10/18/2024, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- no time for animal.
Ares needs emergency placement for medical reasons. He is a young adult cat with a heart murmur and an upper respiratory infection, causing him to have a low appetite and weight loss. He is severely underweight. Ares needs continued medical care and placement outside of the shelter environment to help him recover and investigate his heart condition further.

This pet needs emergency placement. Please click here to go to our emergency placement page for more information. A volunteer writes: The way to Ares' heart is with head scratches, as I discovered when I met this handsome tiger the other night. As soon as he sensed my fingers gently scratching around his ears and cheeks, he instantly went into a kitty bliss state and stayed that way through our entire time together. His former owner also told us that Ares was a total lovemonger, describing him as approachable, good natured, and friendly with children. This very sweet boy was given up to the Care Center because his owner had no time for him, they told us. It's strange, since Ares doesn't come off as a needy cat or one who can't entertain himself when his people are away. But let their loss be your gain by making Ares your newest family member. He's waiting for you-and your pettings-on 110th Street today. I have medical needs that staff will address with you when you meet me. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I'm sensitive and shy. I am looking for a home with a patient person. Ares tolerates attention and petting but appears to be moderately fearful or stressed in the shelter. He will likely need time to warm up to his new home. We recommend that he go to a home with some cat experience preferred AND be well counseled in fearful cat behavior. Due to the behavior shown, he may not be a great fit for young children. Any home with older children prepared to adopt this cat should conduct a thorough interaction and endeavor to monitor this cat around their children to prevent these behaviors from being reinforced.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Moderate
VOCAL:: Talkative
CHARACTER TYPE: : Social,Sweet,Affectionate,Curious
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Other,New home adjustment period
Potential challenges comments:: Vocal, conflicted while adjusting to new room, but sweet. Area should be given a slow introduction to the home, one room at a time starting in a small room like a bathroom with food, litter and water. Conflicted behavior seen at the Care Center strongly suggests that he will hide if allowed. Interact with him in this room until he seems sufficiently confident that you feel you can introduce him to the next part of the home without running the risk that he will hide. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to help introduce your cat to the home.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 2
RECOMMENDATIONS:: No young children
Recommendations comments:: No children under 13 due to being conflicted. Subject to counselor discretion.
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: 10.21.2024: Ares was on the karunda bed, appearing curious and even making a partial move to come down at the sound of the treat bag. When the assessor approached to pet him he rolled over into the assessors arms upside down, and allowed to be held, but then began to meow and was gently sat down. He enjoyed all petting, head bunting and rubbing against the assessor's hands while meowing, sometimes stress, meowing and appearing slightly conflicted with a slightly swishy tail, but continued to enjoy the interaction. He ignored treats and food, and in fact preferred to rub against the assessor instead of eating. he is a sweet cat who may need some adjustment time in his new home. 10.31.2024: Ares was at the front of kennel rubbing against the door for attention. He head-bunted the assessor's hand and fell into neck rubs. After the assessor stroked his back several times, Ares began to stress-meow. Staff started to apply pressure on his abdomen and he hissed with his ears tilted sideways. He solicited attention and leaned hard into pets after a moment to reset.
