Animal Profile

Kaneki

Hello, my name is Kaneki. My animal id is #232007. I am a desexed male tan dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 5 years 3 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 7/14/2025.

Kaneki is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Kaneki has been struggling to acclimate to the care center environment despite best efforts to keep him comfortable. Kaneki when being removed from kennel will begin to leash bite intermittently, and is difficult to refocus when doing so making it hard to walk him safely. Kaneki is also reported to heavily pant and vocalize in his kennel at times, and not want to come out of kennel despite attempts to coax him out. Medically, Kaneki is underweight and has glaucoma.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! It is unknown if I have ever lived with other animals or children. I have medical needs that staff will address with you when you meet me. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I am playful and cute! A volunteer writes: Kaneki may be able to see in only one eye, but he doesn't let that slow him down. This little energetic bunny happily bounds around the yard, even happier if he has a toy to carry. He's so sweet and affectionate, coming up to me full of tail-wags and leans in with soft wiggles as I give him butt-scratches; and when I rub his chin, he stretches his neck up as far as he can, making sure I don't miss a spot. He loves it when I toss out a toy - running after it and after giving it a few playful shakes, bringing it back to me, then excitedly waiting for the next toss. We don't know Kaneki's history, but he's been social and affectionate with staff and volunteers alike, though a slow approach is best, especially near his blind side. He knows the cue for "sit" and loves treats. When the shelter introduced him to two different dogs at separate times, he approached one (a female) with a loose, wiggly body, but then they both ignored each other; and with the other (a male), he avoided and was reluctant to approach him. This cute little pooch is so lovable and I think you'll agree, so meet him today at the Queens ACC shelter, where he's hoping to find his new family.

Summary:: Due to entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 08/11/25 Kaneki is introduced at the gate to a novel male dog while off leash at the care center. Kaneki will approach the gate for a brief moment, lip licking and displaying look aways. As Kaneki displaces, sniffing away from the gate, he will stress yawn from a distance. Kaneki remains avoidant, reluctant to approach the gate. This concludes the interaction. 07/16/25 Kaneki is introduced at the gate to a novel female dog while off leash at the care center. Kaneki will approach the gate with a loose, wiggly frame, reluctant to greet the novel female dog as does she, not paying mind to Kaneki as they stand adjacent from each other. Kaneki will solicit attention from the handler in his pen while at the gate as does the novel female dog, looking past Kaneki directly at the handler in Kaneki's pen, vocalizing at them. Kaneki walks away from the gate line, still seeking attention from the handler present in his pen. Kaneki is returned to kennel, concluding the interaction.

Summary (5):: 10/25/25: Kaneki is standing at the back of kennel with a neutral frame as handler approaches. As they unlock the kennel door, Kaneki becomes loose bodied and comes to the front. Handler offers a treat and leashes him with ease, walking out on the street. Kaneki pulls moderately but will stop and sit intermittently throughout the walk to solicit treats. He takes treats gently from hand. He spends several minutes investigating urine spots. After his session, Kaneki is returned to kennel safely. 10/18/25: Kaneki is reported to be reluctant to come out of kennel, and staff has to step in to leash Kaneki due to not wanting to approach. 10/16/25: Kaneki is standing at the front of his kennel and allows the handler to leash him with ease. He is escorted outside for an enrichment walk. While out, Kaneki pulls hard on the leash as he explores the environment, remaining alert and scanning his surroundings. He responds to various cues from the handler and is rewarded with treats. After some time, both sit on a ledge, and Kaneki sits calmly in front of the handler, showing self-regulation. He is rewarded with a handful of treats before being returned to his kennel safely without any issues.

Summary (6):: 10/11/25: Kaneki is reported and observed to return to kennel with no issue, and no reported leash biting while returning he was a bit reluctant to go back into, but was easily coaxed with treats. 10/07/25 Kaneki is at the front of his kennel with a loose frame and wagging tail. The handler administers him a toy while exiting the kennel and Kaneki takes it, carrying it out of the kennel room. Upon arriving at the exit, Kaneki drops the toy, commencing the walk. Kaneki maintains his loose body as well as a moderate pace while walking. Kaneki will take treats gently when administered and will sit firmly when soliciting treats. Kaneki will hop and spin during the walk, appearing exuberant. As he is returned to the facility, he enters the building with no issue. As they enter the kennel room, he is administered a toy in which he carries to the outside of his kennel and he drops it. Treats are tossed in his kennel and he scurries after them, entering his kennel with no issue. 9/19/25: Upon removal from his kennel, Kaneki begins leash biting and thrashing on the slip lead. Attempts to redirect his behavior using treats and toys are unsuccessful, as he shows little interest and instead begins jumping on the secondary handler. When efforts are made to clip the lead to his harness, Kaneki exhibits mouthing and snapping behavior directed toward the handler’s hands. 9/17/25: Kaneki has been noted to become mouthy during interactions, and when the handler attempts to clip his harness. 09/07/25: Keneki is at the front of his kennel standing and barking, with heavy pant when passing by during cleaning time. 09/04/25: Kaneki is standing at the front of his kennel and will take treats from the handler’s hand as they clip his harness. He is then escorted outside to the play yard for enrichment. Once inside the yard, a drag leash is placed on him, and he roams the yard freely while maintaining a soft, relaxed frame. Kaneki approaches the pool, and the handler gradually preps him to get inside by offering treats each time he gets closer. When he places one paw inside the pool, the handler rewards him until he eventually steps all four paws in. Once in the pool, Kaneki begins bobbing for treats, sticking his entire head underwater to retrieve them. After finishing, he steps out of the pool, explores the yard briefly, and then returns to re-enter the pool on his own to continue engaging. When the session is complete, Kaneki is brought back to his kennel safely without any issues.

Summary (7):: 08/21/25: Kaneki is standing at the front of his kennel with a loose and wiggly frame and allows handlers to clip on his harness. He then runs out of his kennel, jumping up on the handler with excitement. Outside, Kaneki maintains a mostly loose frame while walking on a loose leash as he explores the neighborhood. The handler rewards him for responding to a sit cue while waiting at a red light. Once the session is complete, Kaneki is safely returned to his kennel without any issues. 8/11/24: Kaneki was sitting at quietly at front of kennel as handler approached. He was leashed with ease and walked to the hall with a wiggly body where handler clipped leash to harness. Kaneki marked and scented on the way to the yard for a gate greet (see dog-dog summary.) Kaneki waited in the hall while his kennel was cleaned. He was patient and accepted scratches under the chin. Kaneki was returned to kennel using treats and unclipped from his harness. 7/29/25: Kaneki was sleeping in kennel as handler approached. He was leashed with ease and walked to the BA room where he was clipped to a drag leash. Kaneki was highly social with multiple handlers and would approach often to solicit pets and treats. He was loose bodied at seemed at ease throughout interaction. Kaneki was returned to kennel with ease. 07/18/25(Assessment Note): Kaneki is standing at the front of his kennel and will rush out as the handler opens the door to place the lead over his head. He is then leashed and brought to the assessment room, where a drag leash is placed on him. Once inside, Kaneki walks around the room exploring. During the handling portion of the assessment, he displays some touch sensitivity, maintaining a neutral body posture but head-whipping when touched around his back area. When returning to his kennel, Kaneki pulls with strength, demonstrating forward momentum. For more information, see behavior assessment. 7/16/25: Kaneki greeted handler and a staff member (training) at front of kennel and was leashed with ease. He was handed off to the staff member and they walked to the yard for playgroup (see dog-dog summary.) Kaneki did not appear to pull on leash. Kaneki was highly food motivated. He was aloof and neutral throughout interaction. The staff member returned him to his crate using a treat scatter.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4

Recommendations:: No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Kaneki handling sensitivity when hands hover/ past his face we recommend he is placed in a adult only home.

Potential challenges: : Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Leash-biting,Strength/leash pulling

Potential challenges comments:: Mouthiness / Poor Bite Inhibition: Kaneki has been noted to become mouthy during interactions, and when the handler attempts to clip his harness. This behavior suggests a need for bite inhibition training, using redirection to appropriate toys, structured play, and positive reinforcement to encourage gentler mouth use and reduce inappropriate mouthing. PLease see the handout on Mouthiness / Poor Bite Inhibition. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression/Handling/touch sensitivity:Kaneki displays sensitivity to touch, as evidenced by head-whipping with a closed mouth when lightly touched on his around his head. This response suggests discomfort with physical contact and should be addressed through slow, positive desensitization to handling, using consent-based touch and reinforcing calm behavior during low-pressure interactions. Please see the handout on decompression period and Handling/touch sensitivity Leash-biting: Kaneki is noted to leash bite in care and snap at handlers hands when they attempt to clip the drag lead to his harness. Strength/leash pulling:Kaneki is noted to hard pull on the lead while on walks.Training should focus on loose-leash walking techniques, using appropriate equipment such as a front-clip harness, and rewarding the dog for walking calmly beside the handler. Please see the handout on Strength/leash pulling.
