Animal Profile

Apollo

Hello, my name is Apollo. My animal id is #212620. I am a desexed male fawn dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 5 years 1 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 10/18/2024.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Apollo is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Apollo in care has not been acclimating well to the shelter environment, and continues to deteriorate within the care center despite best efforts to keep him comfortable. Apollo in care has been unable to settle outside during interaction with select staff members, and in kennel hypersalivates creating a pool of saliva beneath him. Apollo in care has also escalated to lunging at unfamiliar staff members in the shelter hallways. Apollo presents as social with only select staff members. Medically, Apollo is apparently healthy.

Apollo came into the care center as a stray with his history is unknown. Apollo has exhibited behaviors of concern in the care center, particularly involving heightened reactivity in his kennel and to strangers passing him. He has been observed hard barking, growling, and baring teeth when approached. These behaviors are often accompanied by a tense body posture and hard stares, indicating heightened stress or discomfort. In some instances, Apollo will soften his body and engage in sniffing behavior when handlers approach his kennel, suggesting a level of curiosity or potential for interaction. Due to his medical needs Apollo has spent a lot of time with a small group of staff that he has warmed up to really well and is very comfortable with them. He has shown social behaviors with them and even picked up on learning soem tricks like giving paw. He will grumble for pets and attention. He will also lean his body on cage to get staff to pet him. He can be very sweet and attention seeking to staff that he has warmed up to. He loves chin rubs and ear scratchies. He knows the commands sit, and give paw! Due to these behavioral challenges and conflicting behaviors, including his reactivity and discomfort with close proximity to some staff, Apollo is available for foster/adoption through one of our new hope partners.

Summary:: Due to Apollo coming in as a stray, there is no previous dog history. 11/21/24 Apollo is introduced to a novel female dog while off leash at the care center. Apollo greets the novel female dog exuberantly, offering a play bow and whining. The novel female dog is taken to greet him face-to-face. As she enters the pen, she is scenting, appearing to displace sniff while Apollo cant settle. Apollo is pulling his way towards her while heavily panting with wide, red eyes. Apollo is sexually motivated as he attempts to mount her and fixates on her genitals. She does not allow Apollo to sniff them, moving away and protecting her genitals. Apollo is persistent and must be moved away. 10/19/24: Apollo is observed to greet another novel female dog at the gate with a high wagging tail and neutral body when approaching the gate. Apollo is brought in on -leash initially greeting the other dog with a neutral body sniffing the female's genital's, but becoming increasingly more reluctant to continue greeting and begins to make distance from the other dog where the greet is ended.

Summary (1):: He loves chin rubs and ear scratchies. He knows the commands sit, and give paw!

Summary (3):: 11/24/24: Apollo was lying on kuranda bed when handlers approached. Apollo appeared sedate as his eyes were squinted and he moved slowly. He appeared to have eaten most of what was in his medication tray. Apollo accepted treats hand fed and was leashed with ease by handler 2 while handler 1 observed. Apollo ignored other dogs in kennel room on his way to the BA room for his assessment. Apollo was clipped to a drag leash which handler 1 held onto for duration of interaction. Apollo displayed conflicted behavior by approaching staff and taking treats but appearing tense and alert. Apollo approached couch where handlers were seated and sniffed blanket intently. Handler 1 would slowly pull Apollo away using directional leash pressure whenever he started to tense up. Apollo was placed back on a slip leash by handler 3 so handler 1 could untangle his drag leash. Handler 1 slowly turned leash/collar so that leash clip was at the back of Apollo's neck before reaching down to unclip it. Handler 3 walked Apollo back to kennel room, where they waited in the hall while fresh bedding was provided. Handler 3 reported Apollo fixated on handler 4 (staring) who was standing in the hall near them. Handler 4 increased distance and handler 3 returned Apollo to kennel without issue. 11/24/24: Staff member approached the kennel and Apollo was soliciting attention quickly - with a wagging tail. Apollo was leashed easily and brought out for a walk. Apollo walked well on leash - exhibiting a neutral body with a mostly loose leash. When Apollo would pull - slight leash pressure was used to correct his behavior - and he continued to walk without incident.

Summary (4):: 11/23/24: Apollo came to front of kennel tail wagging. Waited patiently while leash was put on him. Came out with loose body and was not focused on other dogs. Once outside walked path with loose leash. Stop to look at other dogs but did not react to them. Handler called out his name to refocus and he quickly responds to it. Apollo walk passed people with loose body no reaction. Used bathroom fine and was interested in patches of grass. Soliciting attention from handler and leaned into pets. Apollo was taken back to kennel with no issue. 11/21/24: Apollo is at the front of his kennel panting when the handler approaches, and begins to tense as the handler slowly bends down to greet Apollo. Apollo ignores treats attempted to be given to him, is leashed and taken out for a dog-dog greet. (See DOG-DOG Summary for more details). During the interaction with staff, Apollo has troubling settling, panting heavily with a red hue around his eyes and continues to displace not interacting with the staff, even after coaxing. Apollo is taken back to his kennel with no issue. 11/21/24: As a handler is setting up musical enrichment, they can hear heavy panting behind them. They turn to see Apollo panting heavily and hyper-salivating. He is standing in a pool of saliva at the front of his kennel. 11/18/24: Apollo was taking out by VS staff for a long walk. As staff approached his kennel, he had a loose body and a wagging tail. Staff was able to easily rope him. As Apollo walked through the building hallway, he mildly pulled towards the end of the hallway door. Outside on his walk he continued to have a loose body. As staff was walking him a civilian passed alongside him in which apollo easily ignored as he continued to sniff and walk. On his walk apollo would seek attention from staff. Coming back inside, apollo stopped to look at the dogs in small dog adoptions then continued on his walk back into his kennel in which he went in easily.

Summary (5):: 11/15/2024:Apollo was taken outside by a VS staff member that hadn't met him or taken him out before. He was sitting at the front of the kennel and waited for the leash to be put on him. He was then walked through the shelter where he saw other shelter staff members but he stayed walking on a loose leash and walked very excitedly towards the staff members that he recognized due to them handling him while he has been at the shelter. He was then walked outside to the play yard where he was put on a drag leash and proceeded to interact with his surroundings and the three staff members that were in the play yard with him. He interacted with the staff when shown toys and would excitedly run around the play yard with them. He would solicit attention by leaning on staff members legs, and listened to commands like sit in order for the staff members to take pictures of him. He was then taken back inside where he saw another dog. He quickly fixated on the dog but then once the staff member who was walking him called his name, he proceeded to walk alongside the staff member instead of focusing on the other dog. 11/14/2024: Apollo was taken to the pharmacy area to have some interaction. We were teaching him a couple of tricks. He is a quick learner and knows his sit and paw, he is very food motivated. We took him for the photoshoot, on our way there, he walked with a loose body. During the interaction, he was very comfortable with strangers, photographers. For the photo, he allowed us to position him and understood sit and stay. On our way back to his kennel, he walked with a loose body and walked in his kennel without an issue.

Summary (6):: 11/14/2024: During meeting in main medical, apollo was taken out of his kennel and attended the meeting as well. He sat quietly, and accepted pets by all staff. He was also taking treats gently. While waiting for meeting to start with approximately 10+ people in the room, Apollo was eagerly doing tricks like paw and sit. He looked at the cats in the ICU through the glass window, but then started soliciting attention by the staff again once his name was called.

Summary (7):: 11/16/24: A member of staff reported Apollo lunging at another member of staff while on a walk. 11/6/24: Tail wags and sniffs toy when offered. tenses after a while but plays with toy when given space. 10/28/24 Apollo is heard and seen hard barking and growling at the front of his kennel. He hard stares and will bare teeth when near. 10/24/24: Apollo is observed to growl, tense, and hard bark when in the room during rounds. He will stop and whale eye when approaching his kennel then continues when walking away. 10/24/24: Apollo is observed to be hard barking and growling at the front of his kennel when initially approached. Apollo softens his body when going to sniff the handler through he bars, and remains aloof now beginning to only bark. When the handler leaves Apollo's kennel and is observed from the other transparent side of the glass, he is laying down staring at the handler.

Date of intake:: 10/18/2024

Date of initial:: 10/19/2024

Summary:: timid, took treats, muzzled as precaution

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Apollo so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13)- Due to Apollo fearfulness and handling sensitivity we recommend he is placed in an adult-only home at this time. Place with a New Hope partner- Apollo came into the care center as a stray with his history is unknown. Apollo has exhibited behaviors of concern in the care center, particularly involving heightened reactivity in his kennel. He has been consistently observed hard barking, growling, and baring teeth when approached. These behaviors are often accompanied by a tense body posture and hard stares, indicating heightened stress or discomfort. In some instances, Apollo will soften his body and engage in sniffing behavior when handlers approach his kennel, suggesting a level of curiosity or potential for interaction. Apollo has allowed minimum handling and displayed discomfort possible due to the open wound around his neck. Due to these behavioral challenges, including his reactivity and discomfort with close proximity, Apollo is avabile for foster/adoption through one of our new hope partners.

Potential challenges: : Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Kennel presence

Potential challenges comments:: Handling/touch sensitivity/Fearful/potential for defensive aggression/Kennel presence- Apollo has displayed growling and hard barking at the handler in the kennel and displayed handling sensitivity. Medically Apollo has a wound around his neck due to an embedded collar. It is crucial to proceed with patience and allow the dog the autonomy to withdraw from any social interaction if needed. Dogs should never feel pressured to engage with situations or handling that make them uncomfortable. Respect for the dog's boundaries is paramount, ensuring that they have the freedom to approach new people or situations at their own pace. Apollo may thrive in a tranquil and serene home environment initially, where he can gradually acclimate to his new surroundings with patience and understanding. Please see handout on Handling/touch sensitivity/Fearful/potential for defensive aggression/Kennel presence. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration- Apollo was reported to lunge at staff members in the hallways displaying a tense body. Kennel presence- It is reported that Apollo will hard bark,growl, and bare teeth in kennel.
