Sarah
Hello, my name is Sarah. My animal id is #32620. I am a desexed female brown tabby cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 8 years 2 months old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 6/22/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- moving.
Sarah is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.
Let's get to know each other a bit more...
What my friends at ACC say about me: I have lived with cats in my previous home. I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 6/29/26 FB61 In cat den upon approach, body and face initially hidden from view. I open the kennel door and when I lift her den cover she hisses and swats her den door hard. Since she is so stressed, I do not push petting at this time. I keep the interaction brief and I leave her some treats and a toy to explore later. She remains hidden and does not engage with her treats for the duration of time I'm on the second floor. Needs more time. 7/7/26 Sarah is in her box. I open the kennel door and offer her some push up treat on a tool. She sniffs it, moves slightly so she can see me better, and lets out a low growl. I pull back the tool and close the kennel. I make a tray of temptation/push up treat to leave her. As I push it towards the opening of her box with a tool I hear a sharp hiss. I ended the interaction. 7/12/26 FB25 Sarah is in her den upon approach. She can be heard hissing when I enter. I slowly place some treats in and she steps forward and begins swatting, hissing with a wide mouth. With the door closed, I slow blink at her through the glass. She continues to hiss and growl loudly. When she stops hissing, I slow blink for a few more moments and then end the interaction here. Adding her to Fraidy Cat Club, hopefully can de-sensitize her to having people approach her in kennel and continue to build positive associations.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Timid,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period
Potential challenges comments:: Please see relevant behavior flyers.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3
RECOMMENDATIONS:: No young children
Recommendations comments:: Due to Sarah's behavior during evaluation and the fact that she has no prior experience living with children apart from a prior scratch incident when startled, the feline behavior team recommends a home with no children below the age of 13.
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Upon approach, Sarah is crouched low in the back of her kennel. Her limbs are tucked tightly beneath her and she has forward ears. When the assessor opens the kennel door, she begins hissing and low growling. She remains in place and begins lip-licking when the assessor gets closer. She tolerates all petting with a scratcher tool, remaining still as it is run along her body and over her head. She seems to lean slightly into the touch on her head and slow blinks at the assessor, though remains stiff and attempts to inch farther away into the corner. No pick up is attempted at this time due to signs of FAS. Sarah tolerates attention and petting but appears fearful or stressed in the shelter. She may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to her new home. We recommend this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents. Due to the behavior shown, she may not be a great fit for young children. Any home with older children prepared to adopt this cat should conduct a thorough interaction and endeavor to monitor this cat around their children to prevent these behaviors from being reinforced.
