Claremont
Hello, my name is Claremont . My animal id is #209204. I am a desexed female brown dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 3 months 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 9/1/2024.
Claremont is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Claremont has been highly stressed in the kennel environment, jumping at her kennel door repeatedly, and spinning. Caremont struggles to regulate on her own, but is social with staff and engages with enrichment to help her regulate her arousal, but still struggles inside her kennel. Medically, Claremont is apparently healthy.

This pet needs emergency placement. Please click here to go to our emergency placement page for more information. What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I am excitable and energetic! I will need positive outlets for my energy! I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some canine body language together! A volunteer writes: I don't think I'll do her justice by trying to explain how I feel when snuggling with Claremont. My heart swells at least three sizes the moment she burrows into me, rests her 10 pound noggin on my knee and pushes her body as close as humanly possibly into me. While I'd like to believe that she reserves these special moments only for me, I have a sneaking feeling that she is willing to love just about anyone who treats her with the smallest bit of kindness. It only took a little baby talk and a few treats to have her putty in my hands (or is it the other way around?). I wish I could sit with her all day long, but alas, other dogs await and I begrudgingly have to take her back into the shelter. Claremont was found tied to a pole by police. They reported that she was very friendly with them, too. She was noted to be underweight and have a tar like substance on her leg when she arrived, and it's clear she has been a momma in the not too distant past. Claremont has been loose and wiggly in her interactions with our behavior staff and when meeting a novel male dog, she's initially relaxed and approaches cautiously but gets overwhelmed by the other dog's persistence and seeks comfort from handlers. Due to some stress shown in the shelter, Claremont will do best in a home with no small kids that can provide positive reinforcement and force-free training.

Summary:: Due to Claremont entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded 11/20/24: When off leash at the Care Center Claremont is introduced to a greeter female dog. At the gate Claremont hard pulls to the gate. Claremont scents begins chasing the greeter female along the gate line before standing on the gate barking and whining. Claremont's vocalizations escalates to yelping. Due to Claremont's frustration and arousal the pen gate was not opened. Only a gate greet was conducted. 09/14/24: When off-leash at the Care Center, Claremont is introduced to a novel male dog. At the gate, Claremont jumps up with a relaxed posture and wagging tail, mostly seeking the handlers' attention. She briefly sniffs the novel male before walking away to sniff the ground. The novel male is moved to the back of the pen to give Claremont space to enter. Once inside, Claremont approaches cautiously and sniffs the novel male. When the novel male shows interest and begins sniffing in return, Claremont creates distance by moving away. She displays "whale eyes" before softly licking the novel male's muzzle. Feeling overwhelmed by the novel male’s scenting, Claremont plants herself on the ground and tries to scurry away. She starts seeking comfort from the handlers by jumping on them. To prevent further stress, Claremont is removed from the playpen.
Summary (3):: 12/21/24: Claremont is brought to the canine training room for some enrichment. She engages readily and jumps intermittently onto the handler. Handler offers her some toys but she shows no interest. Claremont eventually chooses to lay down on a snuffle mat. The handler sits on the couch and Claremont jumps up, climbing into their lap and falling asleep. After some time, she is returned to kennel without issue. 12/21/24: Claremont is observed to jump on the front of her kennel door repeatedly with feces smeared across the front of her kennel door due to her jumping. 12/18/24 (Trainer Note): Claremont is standing at the front of the kennel with a loose body as the handler approaches. She is easily leashed and pulls moderately to the canine training room. Claremont engages readily with the various enrichment items. Handler is able to add criteria of Claremont sitting before moving onto the next item. Claremont becomes aroused when leashed, increasing the intensity of her panting and jumping up to stick her face in the handler's treat pouch. She is redirected onto the enrichment for a few moments before being returned to kennel without issue. 12/16: (1) Claremont was seen lunging at other dogs as they passed her kennel while hard barking at them. - (2) {Rep Note} - Observed to become aroused with treats. She began jumping up toward an ACS's face and grazed their nose. 12/12/24: Claremont is lying down in her kennel but will slowly get up and walk to the front, allowing herself to be leashed with ease. She is brought out to the play yard for enrichment, where she is dressed with a drag leash and allowed to free roam. Claremont instantly runs over to the snuffle mat, eagerly engaging and finding all the hidden treats. Once finished, she moves to the slow feeder, where she enthusiastically devours the delicious treats provided. Handlers offer squeeze toys, but Claremont shows no interest, remaining focused on searching for any remaining hidden treats in the snuffle mat. After her enrichment session, Claremont is escorted back into the care center and returned to her kennel safely with no issues. 12/11/24 (Trainer Note): Claremont is standing at the front of the kennel with a loose body. Summary:: hypervigilant, anxious, allowed handling
Date of initial:: 9/3/2024
Summary:: Stressed in kennel, painted with stool. Soft bodied and curious, very food motivated,
ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Claremont so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Claremont's high anxiety and hyperarousal, we recommend he goes to an adult-onl home.
Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Social hyperarousal,Anxiety,Leash-biting
Potential challenges comments:: Basic manners/poor impulse control/Social hyperarousal: Claremont jumps on staff in a social manners, and quickly becomes aroused with the precense of people. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used to teach Claremont to remain calm when people and other exciting things are around. He should be rewarded with treats when calm. If he escalates to jumping or mouthing, people should immediately walk away from and separate themselves from Claremont. Anxiety: Claremont is anxious during his stay. We recommend long walks and puzzle toys to alleviate his anxiety. See handout on Generalized Anxiety. Leash Biting: Claremont has been reported on several occasions to leash bite when attempting to remove her from kennel. Please see handout on arousal.
