Animal Profile

Mochi

Hello, my name is Mochi. My animal id is #239516. I am a desexed male black cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 1 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 10/17/2025, with the surrender reason stated as animal behavior - aggressive towards people.

Mochi is on the at-risk list due to his behavior. He has slowly made progress while in shelter and is now open to pets and interactions with staff. Due to his previous behaviors in shelter and his previous history in his last home, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home. What my friends at ACC say about me: I have potential behavior challenges that staff will address with you when you meet me. I'm an independent kitty who likes to do my own thing. I am looking for a home with a patient person. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I will flourish in a calm environment and a low-traffic home. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets. I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some feline body language together!

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 10/23/25 FB61 In cat den upon approach, body and face initially hidden from view. Mochi began hissing and hissing as the kennel door opened and I did not attempt petting at this time. I left him some treats and a catnip toy for later... hopefully he explores the offerings later when he feels more safe. 10/28/25 FB06 Mochi was crouched at the back of the ledge with wide eyes and ears forward. Using the food slot, I offered the scratcher with treats on it. He leaned forward and sniffed the treats but then backed away. I attempted to pet him with the scratcher but when it touched him, he jumped down on top of the den, turned around and hissed and swatted at the scratcher. 11/04/25 FB06 Mochi was at the front of the kennel with a neutral face and eyes and his tail wrapped loosely around his body. As I offered him the scratcher, he jumps on top of the ledge. Following him with the scratcher, he avoids it at all costs. He fake pumps, as if he was going to swat, multiple times but doesn't. He instead leans in and sniffs and the evades the scratcher. 11/06/25 FB20 Mochi is laying in the main area of the kennel, outstretched and relaxed with soft almond eyes. He comes forward to sniff the scratcher tool and chirps. I place a tray of squeeze up down. When pet along his cheeks he chirps again and avoids the tool. I pet him along his body several times and he stands up and stretches, coming to lick the squeeze up. I speak to him softly as he eats. once finished, he comes to sit in the cubby and softly meow at me. 11/12/25 FB58 Certainly seems to be improving! He is laying at the front of the cage and curled up with a soft body as he rests. He stands as the cage door is opened and appears somewhat wary and tense. I offer treats and my hand out for him to sniff (wearing bite glove). He sniffs my hand and ducks his head, accepts pets along his head and cheeks and arches his back up into the touch with his tail raised. 11/17/25 FB61 Standing in front of kennel, body and face relaxed with his ears forward and his tail lowered. He flinches and leans away a bit, but he is tolerant of a few head and shoulder pets with the scratcher tool before completely retreating with flattened ears. I reward him with squeeze-ups which he eats immediately! When I pet him as he eats he begins to arch his shoulders. May be warming up! 11/21/25 FB58 At the front and trills as he sees me - he accepts pets along his head and cheeks with a mostly neutral face and body, sniffing my hand and ducking his head for more pets. He also allows pets along his back with his tail raised high. There are still times where he pulls back slightly to look at my hand with his ears slightly pulled if I move too quickly or pet too thoroughly. May be okay to remove soon due to already being re-evaled to the lowest level he will be and previously allowing pick up. Will just need to monitor for O/S for a few more days. -GAN

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Moderate

VOCAL:: Somewhat chatty

CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Sweet,People oriented,Curious,Timid,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Rough play,Fearful,Other,New home adjustment period

Potential challenges comments:: Owner got Mochi off of FB marketplace 3 months ago. She reported that initially Mochi would play rough and would sometimes randomly swat when people walked by. In the past few months, Mochi has increasingly become more aggressive. Mochi will randomly attack. Every time the roommate of the owner would get close to Mochi, Mochi would attack. On 10/17 the roommate was feeding Mochi. He leaned over and gave the food bowl to Mochi when Mochi began to scratch and bite his arms and hands. He had to pull Mochi off to stop him. The incident left multiple scratches and wounds, breaking skin and drawing blood. Mochi was taken to the veterinarian earlier in October 2025 after owner noticed a chipped tooth. The veterinarian diagnosed Mochi with a fever. They recommended bloodwork and x-rays. In addition, no litter box issues were noted on behavior profile but client also stated that “Mochi stopped using the litterbox but will only urinate and defecate while attacking.”. Mochi had access to an automatic litterbox with unscented, clumping and clay litter located in the closet. It is unclear if Mochi stopped using the litter box completely or if he would ALSO urinate and defecate when attacking people. This behavior during attacks could also indicate that he is very scared in the moment. In shelter, his litter box usage is being monitored and at the time of his evaluation on 10/24/25, he appears to be using the litter box on some days and not using it at all on other days, most importantly he has not had any accidents or inappropriate elimination issues. At the time of re-eval 11/19/25, Mochi appears to be consistently using the litter box. 11/19/25 While it has taken Mochi some time to adjust to the shelter setting, initially displaying highly fractious likely fear-based defensive aggression - upon meeting with him again today, he appears to have warmed up and made significant progress to where he trills at the front and somewhat solicits attention by ducking his head or tilting slightly towards the hands offered out. He does remain sensitive to his environment however. It is still not clear if his behaviors in the previous home were partially influenced by the environment he was in as well as his high level of FAS.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

Recommendations comments:: Due to the behavior in the previous home, that seen in shelter, and needing a longer time to warm up - the behavior team feels Mochi would do best in an adult-only home where they would be able to acclimate in a calm environment.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: 10/24/25 On approach, Mochi is in his den with his head poking out, eyes wide and dilated, growling with ears tilted, before hissing. He ducks back into the den when treats offered, and the den door is closed. He lunges multiple times at the assessor's hand as they are reaching to unclip the den door. When the door is lifted slightly and the scratcher tool is introduced, he swats and bites/nips at it while growling. The assessor switches to the Assess-A-Hand and he majorly escalates; hissing and growling as he swats hard with both front paws at the hand, bites and holds it, hold the hand down and pulls stuffing out of the hand. Pick up is not attempted and the interaction is ended. 11/19/25 Upon meeting with Mochi again, he appears to have slowly been making progress to interact with behavior staff and remain at the front to engage with pets and even solicit some of the attention and petting on his own. On approach, he is sitting at the front of the cage and trills, standing with his tail raised and walking back and forth at the front as the cage door is opened. The assessor offers their hand out and he trills again before lowering his head and accepting pets along his head and cheeks, leaning in. He also allows the assessor to pet along his head and down along his back, with his tail remaining raised. He still appears somewhat skittish and if the assessor moves their hand too quickly, he will pull his head back and into his neck tensing. However, when the assessor continues to hold their hand out to him, at times he approaches and either ducks his head down or tilts his head towards their hand, seeming to indicate he wants more pets. He continues to allow more pets as he eats treats and even allows the assessor to lift him up and place him back down, not escalating one he is placed back down. While he does allow pick up, due to his previous history in the home and previous bite/scratch history - the behavior team feels that a Level 3* determination might be the most appropriate. Mochi tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
