Animal Profile

Eklips

Hello, my name is Eklips. My animal id is #253365. I am a male black cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 8 years 1 months old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 4/30/2026.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Eklips is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! I'm an independent kitty who likes to do my own thing. I am looking for a home with a patient person. Hi, my name is Eklips and the shelter has been a little overwhelming for me. I came from a home with many cats, who I've gotten along with well. Because I've lived in this home my entire life and have only been around one person, I have little experience with people and am hesitant of new experiences. I would enjoy living in a quiet home, preferably one with lots of vertical space so I have a place to perch and observe the room. I would also appreciate having experienced, patient adopter(s) who are willing to take things slow with me. I would benefit from socialization, using rewards whenever I make a small positive step like making eye contact, allowing petting, or sniffing your hand. I'd prefer to take things at my own pace and would appreciate some good old fashion TLC. If you can open your heart to adopt a cat like me, I'll hopefully have the confidence to come around to my new people, like you!

Behavior Condition: 4. Orange

KNOWN HISTORY:: Eklips was brought in with limited information on his behavior history in a home environment. Eklips lived with 15+ other cats in his previous home.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 5/6/26 Vol. Eklips was in his den. No reaction to green pointer extended slowly through the portal. Per warnings. no further attempts were made to engage him. 5/7/26 Eklips was tightly crouched in the litter box, remaining alert with an intense stare. He hissed and growled when the den door was opened using the scratcher tool to provide a hiding space. He ignored offered treats. A felt square sprayed with Feliway was placed in kennel to help him acclimate. 5/8/26 Vol. Eklips was lying in den facing away from opening. He did not respond when offered treats. He turned his head and looked out when a wand toy was wiggled around. His pupils were dilated and his head was low to the ground. He remained in place, initially low growing but returning a slow blink after a few moments. He retreated back into the den out of view and did not respond when offered squeeze up on scratcher tool. 5/9/26 Vol. I lifted the den cover, and Eklips was at the front of the den in crouch, whiskers fanned out, hissing. After I lowered the den cover, I talked to him for a few seconds, and he continued to hiss and low growl. 5/12/26 He continues to show defensive behavior hissing and striking while he was getting his kennel cleaned. 5/16/26 Vol. in the den with his face close by the portal opening but not still cannot see his face when approached. When door opened and spoken to, he stood up with body tense facing forward. Offered dry treats and then squeeze up on scratcher tool. Swatted at both. Left lickable treat in tray near food.  5/17/26 Vol. Eklips was about the same as last week. He started low growling as soon as I opened the kennel door. When I lifted the den cover a little he hissed. And he swatted hard at the scratcher tool. 5/22/26 Vol. Eklips remained inside his covered den throughout the interaction. His whiskers were visible just inside the den entrance. A small amount of tuna was offered on a stick directly outside the den entrance. He swatted at the stick. He then extended his nose through the den entrance to watch a peacock feather move slowly along the opposite kennel wall. A peacock feather and a catnip toy were left a tray with a wet treat at the front of the covered kennel. 5/24/26 Vol. Spitting and growling when the shoreline cover was lifted, not interested in interaction at this time.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period,Adult cat socialization

Potential challenges comments:: Eklips came from a hoarding situation with 15+ other cats, it is likely that he was not appropriately socialized to humans. Eklips has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide him with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

Recommendations comments:: Due to the behavior seen in shelter and needing a longer time to warm up, the behavior team feels Eklips would do best in an adult-only home where they would be able to acclimate in a calm environment.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: 5/3/26 Eklips is laying in his den, eyes wide, pupils dilated, and whiskers pulled back as the assessor approaches. When the kennel door is opened and the den cover is lifted, Eklips begins low growling, lunging hard at the den door towards the assessor and hissing. He is offered a squeeze up a clik stik but he does not respond to it, remaining tense and continuing to low growl, lunging and hissing when the tool is slowly removed. Eklips is given a moment to settle and the assessor attempts petting with the clik stik. He is able to be pet on the head and cheeks but remains tense with his ears back, leans away to avoid contact, and continues to low growl. When the den door is closed and the assessor goes to place the den cover back on, he swats hard at the den door. Interaction is ended. 5/29/26 Eklips is inside of his den peeking his head out with fully dilated eyes and airplane ears When assessor approaches, he immediately begins striking the den cover, hissing, growling, and spitting. He continues to escalate when assessor presents tool to the portal of the den, striking. Interaction is ended. Eklips is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
