Animal Profile

Marigold

Hello, my name is Marigold. My animal id is #237066. I am a desexed female black dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 4 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 9/18/2025.

Marigold is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Marigold arrived at the Care Center as a stray with no known history. Upon intake, Marigold was noted to have a loose body and allow handling. Despite efforts to keep Marigold comfortable, she is showing concerning signs of low-threshold for arousal. Marigold is noted to be consistently attempting to mount handlers making it difficult to handler her safely. Attempts to use treats and toys to redirect her have not been effective. Marigold at times has also been noted to become mouthy and jump up towards handlers' faces with an open mouth. With staff, Marigold continues to be easily leashed, enters and exits kennel without issue. Medically, Marigold is apparently healthy

I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some canine body language together!

Summary:: 9/23/25: Marigold greets another dog at the gate with a neutral body and soft tail wag. She then growls and shows teeth.

Summary (6):: 10/14/25: Marigold is at the front of her kennel with a neutral body and is then easily leashed. She would pull very hard out of the room and towards the elevator. While waiting for the elevator, she would attempt to mount the handler and a treat was tossed, which she was receptive to. Inside of the elevator, she should attempt to mount again and is then straight-armed away. She is then taken for a street walk, where she would continue to pull hard ahead and relieve herself. Throughout the walk Marigold would continue to attempt to mount the handler. Marigold would then hear a dog bark and would become tense with a stiff tail. She would then begin to pull much harder in the direction she heard the bark in; this behavior isn't easily redirected either. Shortly after, handler decides to return Marigold due to reactivity and excessive mounting. She was returned to her kennel with no further issues. 10/13/25: ACS report that Marigold would continue to mount their leg as they would wait for the elevator. As they straight armed her away she would pass out, as she wakes up she would continue to jump onto the handlers leg again to mount them.

Summary (7):: 10/12/25: On behavior board it is noted that Marigold is "getting mouthy, and jumping with open mouth" 10/12/25: It has been noted on the whiteboard that Marigold is mounting staff. 10/08/25: Member of K9 behavior observes Marigold in the play yard attempt to mount her handler consistently throughout their interaction. Member of K9 behavior attempts to redirect this behavior by using treats and a squeaker but neither are effective. Handler has to straight arm her away to momentarily stop her but she is persistent and continues shortly after. K9 behavior advises that handler walk her around the perimeter of the yard to help distract Marigold which is successful. She pulls forward on leash while walking and chases pigeons occasionally. Marigold attempts one more time to mount handler but when called by member of K9 behavior she shifts her focus. She returns to kennel without further issue. 9/22/25: Marigold is at the front of the kennel with a neutral body and soft wagging tail. She is easily leashed and pulls moderately out of the building towards the driveway. She presses her body against the handlers leg. Handler stops and Marigold leans against their leg more. Handler pets her very briefly, Marigold then jumps up towards the handlers face with a strained expression. Marigold is then brought to the street where she walks on the street in a zig zag motion, she sees a dog nearby and looks to them with a forward posture. Marigold is then walked back to the shelter, she stops and looks to a staff member with a neutral body and tries to pull towards the staff member. Marigold is then brought to the assessment room where she sniffs around the office, a leash is easily clipped to her collar. After her assessment she is returned to kennel without issue.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Marigold so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. However, she will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3

Recommendations:: No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to poor impulse control we recommend an adult only home

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration

Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manner: Marigold has been observed to jump up high on handlers. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Fearful Defensive: Marigold has been observed to growl while getting vaccines. It is important to move slowly with Marigold, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. On Leash Reactivity: Marigold has been observed to become tense and pull towards dogs while in leash. Marigold will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
