Koka is a fun-loving, affectionate 1-year-old mixed breed with lots of energy and an even bigger personality! He loves being around his people, enjoys playing with children, and has previously lived successfully with another dog, two cats, and even birds. He already knows "sit," is crate trained, and is always happy to earn a Milk-Bone or two. Koka is looking for an active home that can help him continue learning good manners. He can be strong on leash and tends to jump up when he's excited to greet people. He has also shown food guarding behavior, so his new family should be prepared to manage meal times and continue positive reinforcement training. While he enjoys familiar dogs, he may bark or react to unfamiliar dogs, especially off leash.

Date of assessment:: 7/12/2026

Summary:: Koka Kola has been observed to have barrier frustration and rope reactivity. Noted to jump up and bite the leash before snapping/biting handlers. Due to the behavior observed while in care, Koka Kola is not a candidate for a handling assessment at this time.

Summary (7):: 7/12/26: Kola Kola was standing at front of kennel with a tense body. As handler was unlocking the kennel Kola jumped and tried to get handler's hands/fingers thru the kennel bars. When handler put leash into kennel Kola jumped and grabbed leash, he then saw handler's hand and tried to snap toward their hand. Handler decided it was best to leave him alone. 7/12/26: It is reported that during midday walks, when a handler attempted to leash Koka Kola he began jumping up and biting the leash. Summary:: Friendly

Date of initial:: 7/9/2026

Summary:: Heavy panting, hyperexcitable and friendly with staff

ENERGY LEVEL:: Koka Kola is described as active and enthusiastic. They will need daily mental and physical activity to keep them engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in addition to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend using force-free, reward-based training techniques for Koka Kola.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to rope reactivity and barrier frustration we recommend an adult only home. No Dog Parks: Due to hard barking and growling towards unfamiliar dogs we recommend no trips to the dog park. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : House soiling,Resource guarding,Basic manners/poor impulse control,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting,Strength/leash pulling,Bite history (human)

Potential challenges comments:: House Soiling: Koka's previous owner states that he has daily accidents in the home. Koka is noted to have accidents in the house, and will likely need guidance with house training. We recommend positive reinforcement, reward-based training only. Accidents should never be punished as this will likely make the problem worse. Please see handout on House Soiling. Resource Guarding: Koka's previous owner reports that he will resource guard food by growling, hard barking, snapping and attempting to bite. Nothing should ever be taken directly out of Koka's mouth, and any time something is removed they should be rewarded with a high value treat or toy. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Basic Manners: Koka's previous owner reports that he will jump up often or non stop. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. On Leash Reactivity/Barrier Frustration: Koka's previous owner reports that he will growl and lunge towards dogs while on leash. While in care, Koka has been observed to attempt to bite handlers through the kennel door. Koka will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Leash Biting/Bite History (human): Koka has been observed to jump up and bite the leash while in kennel. When unable to get the leash, Koka will redirect and bite handler's on the hand. We recommend walking them with a toy to dissuade them from grabbing the leash. Positive reinforcement, force-free training is advised to teach them to focus on you rather than grabbing the leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners. Leash Pulling: Koka's previous owner reports that he will pull hard while on leash. It is recommended that they be walked on a front clip harness or head halter, which will help diminish their strength through leverage, and that they be trained using positive reinforcement, reward based training to not pull on leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners.
