Rocky
Hello, my name is Rocky. My animal id is #240868. I am a desexed male white dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 8 months 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 11/29/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- no time for animal.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormRocky is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Rocky arrived at the Care Center as an owner surrender. Rocky's previous owner noted he is friendly and affectionate. Upon his arrival Rocky was noted to be highly treat motivated during his medical exam. Despite efforts to keep him comfortable, Rocky has been displaying a low-threshold for arousal and on-leash reactivity. Rocky has been reported to vocalize and pull towards dogs on leash and is not consistently able to be redirected. In one instance Rocky was reported to leash bite and began mouthing the arm of a staff member several times with moderate pressure. Rocky has also been reported to intensely thrash when leash pressure is applied. Rocky continues to be treat motivated and social with familiar staff. Medically, Rocky was treated for diarrhea but is otherwise apparently healthy.

This vocal and affectionate boy loves being around people and will happily cuddle up for some loving. Rocky is socially active and playful, always ready for a game with his favorite basketball or a fun tug with his rope toys. Rocky thrives in a lively environment and spends most of his time in the living room, making him the perfect companion for families who enjoy being together. He's friendly and affectionate, well-loved by his previous owner for his cuddly nature. While he enjoys his playtime, Rocky is also mellow and relaxed at times, enjoying moments of peace after some of his energetic antics. Rocky knows how to "Sit" on command and is eager to learn, ready for training sessions that stimulate his mind. This energetic pup is quite the walker, enjoying long outings of about 1 hour and 30 minutes. He does pull hard on the leash, so a confident handler is essential for those daily adventures. Rocky hasn't been crate trained, but he loves car rides and will happily hop in for an outing. He enjoys eating Blue Buffalo dry food and is always excited for treats of any kind!

Summary:: 12/13/25: Rocky greets another dog at the gate with a soft body and soft wagging tail. He then becomes frustrated and jumps on the gate barking.
Summary (6):: 12/15/25: Rocky is reported to be thrashing intensely while on leash 12/11/25: Rocky is at the front of his kennel with a soft body; he begins to jump and paw on the kennel door as the handler unlocks the kennel. He is easily leashed and brought out the room. Rocky becomes jumpy on the handler a few times. On the street, Rocky walks ahead with moderate pulling. When seeing multiple dogs, Rocky whines and attempts to pull towards a few of them, but he refocuses himself on the walk or when the handler calls his name. The handler often gives him the sit command and he follows and takes treats softly. He also has slight interest in passersby. Upon entering, Rocky jumps on a familiar handler with a soft body. The handler clips their leash and returns Rocky to kennel. 12/10/25: ACS reports Rocky became aroused, began to leash bite and mouth the ACS arms through clothing (no broken skin). 12/2/25: Rocky is sitting at the front of his kennel with a wagging tail as the handler approaches. He is easily leashed and brought out the room; while walking out the room, Rocky looks at the kennels. Rocky sniffs the staff members he walks past with a neutral body. On the street, Rocky walks ahead with light leash tension; a few times, he would briefly pull ahead. He also shows no interest in passersby. When returning, Rocky begins to pull in a direction away from the entrance, but the handler guides to the entrance, and both entered. Rocky is then brought in for his assessment (See Assessment Notes). Once it is done, the handler goes to return Rocky. While walking back to his kennel, Rocky keeps his attention on the dogs in kennels he walk past. Once at his kennel, he refuses to enter. The handler tosses treats in there, but he shows no interest. A few times, the handler attempts to muscle him in (with leash pressure), but Rocky doesn't enter, thrashing briefly with each try. The handler calls for help and a second handler; the second handler tosses a treat in his kennel, and Rocky then enters his kennel on his own
Summary (7):: 12/1/25: Rocky is standing at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He is able to be leashed with ease and pulls hard out of kennel and on the way outside for a walk. On the walk, he would continue to pull ahead and would hard stare at dogs as they passed by. He is able to take treats after he is taken away and the dogs are out of sight. He is comfortable approaching the handler for treats and is able to return back to his kennel with no issues. 11/30/25: Rocky is at the front with a soft body and wagging tail. He is easily leashed and taken out of the kennel. He walks out of the room pulling mildly. A dog is in the hallway and he stares at them briefly before being taken to the side. Rocky begins looking back and forth in a slightly frantic manner, pulling back forth. Rocky is brought to the street where he walks besides the handler with a loose leash. He pulls mildly. Rocky relieves himself and sniffs his surroundings. Handler tries to engage with him. Rocky approaches with a soft body and wagging tail. Treats are offered and he sniffs but does not take them. Rocky then remains aloof with the handler. He is walked back to the shelter. Rocky hesitates outside of the kennel room for a moment. Handler calls him over and applies gentle leash pressure. He follows and is returned to kennel without issue. 11/30/25: Rocky is standing at the front of his kennel as handler approaches. He begins jumping at the door as the handler unlocks it. He is able to be leashed and he pulls hard out of kennel. He the begins to thrash and alligator roll on leash while jumping up on the handler. The handler then turns around and muscles him back into kennel. He begins jumping up and would lick at his kennel bars as the handler retrieves their leash back with a hook. He continues to lick at his kennel bars as the handler is walking away.
Date of intake:: 11/29/2025
Summary:: Treat motivated, jumping up on handlers
Date of initial:: 11/29/2025
Summary:: Allows all handling for exam and task
ENERGY LEVEL:: Rocky is described as active and enthusiastic. They will need daily mental and physical activity to keep them engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend using force-free, reward-based training techniques for Rocky.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to handling sensitivity and fearful behavior we recommend an adult only home. No Dog Parks: Due to lunging towards dogs while on leash we recommend no trips to the dog park. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.
Potential challenges: : House soiling,Destructive behavior,Basic manners/poor impulse control,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Anxiety,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Strength/leash pulling,Other
Potential challenges comments:: House Soiling: Rocky's previous owner states that he will have accidents a few times a week. We recommend positive reinforcement, reward-based training only. Accidents should never be punished as this will likely make the problem worse. Please see handout on House Soiling. Destructive Behavior: Rocky's previous owner states that he is destructive in the home with items such as furniture, shoes, and other household items. We are unaware of what, if any, attempts were made to remedy this behavior but we suggest to future adopters that Rocky will need to be provided with physical and mental stimulation and with a variety of appropriate and engaging chew toys so they can engage in necessary chewing behavior without damage to human objects. Please see handout on Destructive Behavior. Basic Manners: Rocky's previous owner states that he jumps up often or non stop. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Handling Sensitivity/ Fearful Defensive: Rocky's previous owner states that he will snap when held/restrained, when his collar is grabbed, and when he is scruffed. While in care Rocky has been obsvered to thrash intensely while on leash. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach Rocky to be more comfortable with this. Please see handout on Handling and Touch Sensitivity. Anxiety: During his assessment Rocky was noted to pant heavily and pace throughout. If Rocky displays anxious behavior in their future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving them other things to focus on to alleviate their anxiety. Please see handout on Generalized Anxiety. On Leash Reactivity: Rocky's previous owner states that he will lunge and bark towards dogs, small animals, and strangers. Rocky will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than dogs and other stimuli. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Leash Pulling: Other: Rocky's previous owner states that he pulls hard while on leash. It is recommended that they be walked on a front clip harness or head halter, which will help diminish their strength through leverage, and that they be trained using positive reinforcement, reward based training to not pull on leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners. Other: Rocky's previous owner states that he will escape the house and the yard.
