Animal Profile

Sally

Hello, my name is Sally. My animal id is #268270. I am a desexed female gray cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 17 years 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 10/19/2026, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance - landlord won't allow.

Sally is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

A volunteer writes: Sally is known to be a shy, quiet, calm and independent cat who is friendly, affectionate and playful when she feels comfortable with the person she meets. She does not seem to have ever mingled with kids, cats or dogs. Imagine how uneasy, lost and scared she must feel in a large busy shelter, alone in a kennel and mostly away from everything and everyone she knew for soooo many years...Sally is not having it. She tries to sleep deep in her cloud and mumbles when we address her. "Leave me alone! I do not belong here! I do not know you! Where is my home? Where is my family?" She shows some interest in food and grumbles while eating it, mostly when I approach her door. "Will you take that too?" Sally is an elderly gal, may be a bit younger than 17 (age stated by her owners). She is pretty, girly, her eyes are bright and she is dressed as a pretty grey mouse. No pet belongs to a cage and even less one who has spent sooo many years living comfortably and loved in a home. Sally is waiting for that special person who will believe in her, believe that there is a sweet soul behind the gruffy cat in a cage....Sally is waiting for you at the manhattan Care Center. What my friends at ACC say about me: I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. My favorite pastime is being visually admired! Pet me with your eyes!

My medical notes are...

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Sally was curled up, resting on top of her den. When spoken softly to she stress meows with eyes wide. Ears erect and forward. She slowly leans away avoiding contact. Hisses and swats at the scratcher tool when attempting to pet. Ended the assessment to help minimize stress. Sally is not open to interaction at this time and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. Because her previous owner reports she is friendly with those she is comfortable with in a home environment, we believe the behavior seen in the care center is shelter-specific and this cat would make a great pet, but is really struggling in the shelter environment. This cat is suitable for adopters with previous cat experience who are willing to work with a cat who needs time and patience to help her adjust to their new home.
