Manuel
Hello, my name is Manuel. My animal id is #215882. I am a male unknown (update later) cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 1 months old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 12/23/2024, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- moving.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormManuel has developed a severe upper respiratory infection while in shelter. He is not eating and is on injectable and oral medication to try to support him through this infection. He needs a lower stress environment and more personal attention in order to heal.

I have lived with cats in my previous home. I have medical needs that staff will address with you when you meet me. I have potential behavior challenges that staff will address with you when you meet me. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I will flourish in a calm environment and a low-traffic home. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. A volunteer writes: When he first came in, Manuel was leaning into head pets but Care Center life can wear you down. Like many cats going through a whole bunch of big changes, Manuel's been trying to find his footing at the Care Center and hasn't found it as easily as he'd like. He was brought to us when his person came into housing issues and, as we can imagine, all these significant shifts have taken their toll. While we don't know much about his history prior to coming to the Care Center and he hasn't been the most forthcoming about who he is now, we do know a little bit about Manuel's approach to shelter life. When we try to start conversations, we can count on his grumbles in response. When we try to offer treats, Manuel explains that he didn't ask for any. He in fact, didn't ask for any of this but I'd like to ask for a little bit of patience on his behalf because he's someone who deserves a chance.

Details on my behavior are...
Behavior Condition: 2. Blue
KNOWN HISTORY:: Manuel was brought in with limited information on his behavior history in a home environment.
ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 1/1/25 Vol. Resting in den with head poking out the portal and dilated eyes. Moved eyes slightly when I spoke to him and unlocked the kennel, but did not return blinks. Low growled as I opened the door slightly and warily watched the tool approach, but did not strike. Leaned forward to sniff chicken, squeeze-up and Meaty Bits on the tool, but then retreated back into his den. Looked out portal again, but did not appear to eat the treats. When I tried to raise the den cover with the tool, struck hard at the front of the den from inside. Left a Feliway square. 1/6/25 Vol. Hiding in den, just inside portal. Moved head towards portal when I spoke to him. Leaned out to sniff a cup of Temptations and squeeze-up, but didn't eat any and then swatted hard once. After that, allowed cup to be dropped into den without further swatting. Low growled and poked head out once more, didn't eat any treats. Continued low growling whenever I spoke to him, so I left him alone! 1/8/25 FB26 Seems under the weather, squinting and sniffling in place. When attempting to make contact he began to hiss and swat at the scratcher tool through the side portal door. Ended the interaction to reduce stress.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Timid,Skittish,Independent
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Manuel was tightly crouched in the den, alert with wide eyes and ears erect and forward. When contact was attempted through the side portal door, he struck at the scratcher tool low growling throughout the assessment. He did not engage and ignored the offered treats. Manuel is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He is extremely stressed/fearful in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
