Animal Profile

Mein

Hello, my name is Mein. My animal id is #232649. I am a desexed male black cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 15 years 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 7/21/2025.

Mein has been placed on the at-risk list for medical reasons. He is diabetic, is obese, and has dental disease. He requires care and attention that we cannot provide.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

This pet needs emergency placement. Please click here to go to our emergency placement page for more information. Mein has been placed on the at-risk list for medical reasons. He is diabetic, is obese, and has dental disease. He requires care and attention that we cannot provide. A volunteer writes: Mein is a super senior whose life was turned up side down when his owner passed away. He was found near his person, may be without food and water for days...Mein is a diabetic cat probably never diagnosed and treated until he came to our care center. He likely had a quiet life but then, suddenly, he lands in a busy medical room, in a kennel, gets "poked" for his treatment, receives daily visits from countless people, does not enjoy the "cantine" so much...The list of problems does not end for Mein. No wonder that Mein is a bit conflicted, at times accepting petting and blinking, at others slowly swatting without using his nails to tell us that his little heart and his senior brain have reached their limit....Mein needs out of the shelter environment to get better. A quiet home, a foster or owner who likes the elderly and is familiar with diabetic cats and a veterinary follow up for his diabetes. Mein is hoping that his lucky star will shine soon... What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! It is unknown if I have ever lived with other animals or children. I have medical needs that staff will address with you when you meet me. I am a shy, timid, older gentleman, looking for the perfect forever home! I am looking for a home with a patient person. I can be slow to adjust to new environments. I prefer to take things at my own pace. I will flourish in a calm environment and a low-traffic home. I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you. I would do best in a home without very tiny humans, although I could be open to older human children once I meet them.

My medical notes are...

Details on my behavior are...

Behavior Condition: 3. Yellow

KNOWN HISTORY:: Mein was brought in as a stray, there is no known information on his behavior history in a home environment.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Shy ,Calm,Timid,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,Other,New home adjustment period

Potential challenges comments:: Please note that this cat is being treated for a medical condition at the time of evaluation. It is difficult to determine at this time how the medical condition may be affecting the behavior. Given that this cat has diabetes and may swat when reaching close, attempting to administer medication may be challenging.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 3

RECOMMENDATIONS:: No young children

Recommendations comments:: No young children due to fearfulness and potential to escalate to swatting. Counselor discretion is advised.

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Mein was lying down on top of the den with his head and ears forward, focused on the assessor with a neutral body and alert eyes. When spoken to and opening the door, he sits up and tenses up. When reaching close to pet him, he quickly and gently gives a warning swat, without his claws out, to bat the assessor's hand away. When pet on the head, cheeks, and body with the scratcher tool, he remains tense, steps back, turns his body away, and lip licks. Pick up was not attempted in order to reduce stress. Mein tolerates attention and petting but appears fearful or stressed in the shelter. He may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to his new home. We recommend this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents. Due to the behavior shown, he may not be a great fit for young children. Any home with older children prepared to adopt this cat should conduct a thorough interaction and endeavor to monitor this cat around their children to prevent these behaviors from being reinforced.
