Ratatouille
Hello, my name is Ratatouille. My animal id is #225621. I am a desexed female gray dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 months old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 4/26/2025.
Ratatouille is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Ratatouille has been displaying high levels of kennel stress and kennel reactivity despite best efforts to keep her comfortable. She hard barks, growls, and lunges at other dogs when they pass her kennel or when moving through the room. She then redirects onto her bedding, biting, shaking, and shredding while still growling. Handlers attempt to reduce visual stressors by covering her kennel, but she also bites and pulls that in, shredding it. At other times, she paces, pants, with red eyes and flushed face. Medically, Ratatouille is apparently healthy.

I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets.

Summary:: Due to Ratatouille entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 05/01/25: When off leash at the Care Center Ratatouille is introduced to a greeter female dog. At the gate Ratatouille cautiously approaches ears back. Both dogs will scent one another through the gate. Conflicted Ratatouille will give mild tail wags, while hyper salivating. The greeter female will display a loose frame but will loose interest, walking away from the gate. Ratatouille will remain present, continuing to hypersalivate. Ratatouille will shake off before loosing interest and walking away himself. This will conclude the interaction. 04/28/25 Ratatouille is introduced to a novel male dog at the gate while off leash at the care center. Ratatouille is soft when approaching the gate, scenting the novel male dog between the holes in the gate. Ratatouille walks away aloof, exploring the pen. Ratatouille keeps to herself for the remainder of the interaction. Ratatouille is returned to kennel, concluding the interaction.
Summary (7):: 06/01/25 Ratatouille is on a walk with a novel handler as the handler approaches. Ratatouille is soft as the handler places their lead onto her and removes the novel handler's lead. Ratatouille is taken on a walk where she displays a loose frame while pulling slightly on leash. Minimal directional leash pressure is applied throughout the walk. Ratatouille will explore throughout the walk and relieve herself as well before being returned to the facility. Ratatouille will enter the building as well as her kennel with no issue. 5/28: Ratatouille continues to become reactive when she sees movements in the room from both people and other dogs. She pants heavily while pacing or attempting to scale up her kennel wall. Ratatouille then redirects onto her bedding biting and shaking them intensely. She then begins to shred them into pieces. 05/27/25 Ratatouille is at the front of her crate with a loose, wiggly frame toe-tapping as the handler unlocks it. Ratatouille is leashed with ease and taken outside for a walk. She will pull her way outside maintaining a loose frame. She will arrive outside, relieve herself and commence walking, pulling less and exploring different parts of the sidewalk. Ratatouille is taken on a lengthy walk where she gradually winds down into a more relaxed pace, trotting alongside the handler on their way back to the facility. Ratatouille will enter the building as well as her crate with no issue. 5/25: Ratatouille can be seen hard barking, growling, and lunging at other dogs when they pass her kennel. She then begins biting, shredding, and shaking her bedding while growling and snarling. 5/20: Ratatouille is seen darting left to right in her kennel while hard barking and screeching at other dogs as they pass her. 4/28: Ratatouille is barking when a handler approaches her crate. She is tense, shaking, and steps back when the handler lifts the covers, but slowly comes forward when offered treats. Ratatouille urinates slightly due to a neighboring dog barking and snarling at her while the handler is leashing her. She scurries to the behavior office, tail mostly tucked still tense. Once in the office, she is offered treats and spray cheese while her collar is adjusted before her assessment begins. Once the assessment is complete, Ratatouille is easily leashed but hesitant to return to her crate. She follows treats when tossed into the crate.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Ratatouille so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Recommend no dog parks
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Ratatouliee's fearfulness, we recommend he goes to an adult-only home. Recommend no dog parks: Due to Ratatouille's reactivity in care, we recommend she does not visit dog parks.
Potential challenges: : Fearful,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful: Ratatouille is a bit fearful in care. It is important to always go slow and give Ratatouille the option to walk away from any social interaction. Ratatouille should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Ratatouille’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Ratatouille would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Ratatouille is observed to react in her crate towards other dogs, redirecting onto her bedding when frustrated.
