Aurora
Hello, my name is Aurora. My animal id is #238573. I am a female white dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 1 months 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a aco - owner surrender on 10/5/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- no time for animal.
Aurora is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Aurora has shown kennel reactivity in the care center, including repeated kennel fighting and lunging at adjacent dogs during entering and exiting kennel rooms. While she can be social and affectionate with staff in calmer environments, leaning into petting and exploring the room, her reactivity toward nearby dogs remains significant and is difficult to handle safely at times. Aurora does have a bite history from her previous home towards a raccoon and has bitten a dog during playgroup. The bite to the other dog did not break skin or draw blood. Medically, Aurora is overweight.

I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some canine body language together!

Summary:: According to Aurora's previous owner(s), Aurora does not like cats or raccoons and has no issues with dogs. Familiar/unfamiliar are not specified as well as on/off leash. 11/12/25 Aurora is introduced to an unfamiliar male dog while on leash at the care center. Aurora will approach the gate initially with a soft body and wagging tail. As the handlers guide her into the male dog's pen, she seeks attention from the handler's present, jumping onto them and standing on them while she receives pets. She sees the male dog and approaches him. As the male dog sniffs her, she becomes short lipped and Aurora whips around and lunges at him attempting to grab him with her paws, snapping vigorously. She does make contact but handlers are able to quickly seperate the dogs. They are separated quickly and Aurora is returned to kennel. The bite does not break skin or draw blood. 10/09/25 Aurora is introduced at the gate to a male helper dog while off leash at the care center. Aurora approaches the gate with a neutral frame and low-wagging tail. She sniffs the male dog through the gate and her tail shoots straight up and becomes stiff, with a slight, tight wag. Aurora walks away appearing conflicted, displacing as she sniffs away from the gate.
Summary (6):: 11/25/25 (KSV): Aurora is lying at the back of kennel with a soft frame as handler approaches. Handler passes Aurora a raw hide and she readily engages with it, taking it to the back of kennel and chewing on it. She remains soft bodied as handler stands in front of kennel and continues to engage with her enrichment as handler exits the room. 11/20/25: Aurora is observed to kennel fight all the way out of the kennel room. 11/14/25: Aurora is at the front of her kennel panting when the handler approaches and is easily leashed to be brought to the behavior office. Aurora begins to kennel fight with teh dog next to her lunging towards them and quickly walked out of the room along the wall. Aurora in the office space is social with staff, leaning into petting, appeasement grinning and exploring her surroundings. Aurora does mount the handler once, but is pulled off slowly and does not attempt to do it again. Aurora after a bit is easily leashed to be brought back to kennel. 11/4: Aurora was waiting at the front of her kennel as the handler approached. She seems to be recovering well from her illness as she has more energy, enough to run around and do zoomies in the yard. On our walk, she ignored passing dogs and merely gave a glance to the humans. She quickly did her business and was receptive to pats on the head. All in all, her personality is beginning to come out. 10/30: Aurora was calm and receptive as the handler approached her kennel. She allowed leashing without hesitation and displayed relaxed body language with a wagging tail. Upon exiting, she briefly ate food from the floor, showing mild environmental interest. During the walk, Aurora paused periodically to look at the handler, demonstrating attentiveness and engagement. Once it started to rain, she ran back toward the building. Aurora was easily guided back into her kennel. 10/28/25: Aurora starts wagging her tail when she sees the handler. She is easily leashed and attempts to eat some kibble on the floor. On our walk, she ignores passing dogs and does her business on the grass. She pulls slightly on the leash in excitement. The handler pets her head and back. Every so often, Aurora coughs and hacks. She patiently waits while the handler resets her bedding, which has no accidents from the previous night.
Summary (7):: 10/15/25: Aurora is at the front of her kennel with a loose body, and low wagging tail, and is easily leashed to be brought to the yard. Aurora in the yards is highly social and affectionate, leaning into contact, jumping on the handler and keep there head in-between there legs for petting. Aurora only moves away once to sniff around, but solicits contact without coaxing and continues to stay near the handler. Aurora is easily leashed and brought back to kennel with no issue. 10/9/25: Aurora is laying down at the back of her kennel as handler approaches. She slowly comes forward and is able to be leashed with ease. She is then slowly taken to the play yard for play group. In the yard, she has a tense body and low tail as she greets the other dog at the gate and then disengages. She becomes loose when she sees a familiar handler and would approach and accept pets. Please see dog to dog notes for more details. She pulls on the way back to her kennel and enters with no issues. 10/08/25 (Assessment Note): Aurora is sitting in the back of her kennel and slowly approaches the front, allowing the handler to leash her with ease. She is then escorted to the assessment room, where a drag leash is placed on her. Aurora allows all handling, maintains a neutral frame, and runs with the handler without becoming aroused. She does not respond to knock and backs away from the toy during presentation. Aurora is returned to her kennel safely without any issues. See behavioral assessment for more information. 10/08/25 Aurora is at the front of her kennel with a soft body, standing on her kennel door. Aurora is leashed with ease as she drops to all fours and proceeds outside for a walk. Aurora displays a soft body, maintaining a moderate pace. She is taken to the play yard where she will explore. She is kept on leash, sniffing different parts of the pen. Aurora will sniff treats when administered but not take them, displaying a slight tucked tail. Aurora is returned to her kennel after some time. Aurora will enter the building as well as her kennel with no issue. 10/07/25 Aurora is lying down in her karanda bed as the handler approaches. She comes forward with a low wagging tail and whale eyes, sitting softly in front of her kennel door. Aurora is easily leashed and taken to the play yard. As she exits the facility, she displays a tucked tail and whale eyes as she slowly scurries alongside the handler. Upon arriving in the pens, Aurora appears hyper-vigilant, scanning her surroundings sharply. Aurora will become startled off of loud, abrupt noises, tucking her tail further. She allows handling, remaining soft. The handler clips a drag leash to her and allows her to free roam. Aurora will explore the pen, keeping a neutral body. She is returned to the facility where she enters the building as well as her kennel with no issue.

Summary:: Body relaxed; easily examined; social
ENERGY LEVEL:: We have little history on Aurora so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),No cats,Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Aurora is fearful in the care center, so we recommend she goes to an adult-only home. No cats: We reccomend Aurora be placed in a home with no cats or small animals. single-pet/recommend no dog parks: Due to Aurora's reactivity displayed while at the care center, we highly advise she be the only pet in the home along with avoiding all dog parks.

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful: Aurora is noted to become fearful Afraid of people touching feet and cutting nails. when Aurora is a bit fearful in the care center. She should never be forced to approach anything that she is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be her choice to approach a new person or thing. Aurora would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to her new surroundings. See handout on Decompression Period & Handling/touch sensitivity. Bite history (other animal): Aurora went out for a walk in the morning and her neighbor at had a raccoon chained up outside the house and her dog Aurora saw the raccoon and attacked it.
