Recently Berthold has escalated to hard barking and snapping at handlers. It is also reported that Berthold has a bite history; however, limited details were collected. Due to the detailed behavior, we recommend an experienced adult only home. What my friends at ACC say about me: My history is a mystery and my friends here do not know much about me yet! It is unknown if I have ever lived with other animals or children. I would do best in a home without very tiny humans, although I could be open to older human children once I meet them. I am playful and cute! I will need appropriate toys and positive outlets for my energy.

Summary (7):: 3/17/26: Berthold is at the front of his kennel with a neutral body. He is easily leashed and brought out of the kennel. On the street, Berthold walks ahead with mild leash tension; he tends to fixate on spots for him to sniff and relieve himself on. He doesn't react to passersby. Upon return, Berthold begins to pull away a bit when walking to his room. The handler clips their leash and walks Berthold to his kennel. They toss the treats into his kennel, and as he enters and turns around, Berthold hard barks and bares teeth as the handler removes the leash. 3/16/26: Berthold is hard barking at the handler in his kennel. When his door is unlocked and opened, he softens in body and begins to wag his tail. He dodges the leash and yawns and barks at the handler. He won't take treats or high value treats. He continues to dodge the leash until he is eventually leashed and lead to the street. He pulls hard and relieves himself. He allows his leash to be clipped. He is brought back to the kennel room and enters his kennel willingly. As soon as the handler applies leash pressure to the loop to remove it from his neck, Berthold stiffens, hard stares, pulls his commissures forwards, and growls with his teeth showing slightly. The handler removes their hand from the kennel quickly and pulls the leash off from outside. Berthold continues to bark and growl. He recovers a bit after the leash is off and the door is shut. 3/15/26: Berthold is reported to be at the front of the kennel hard barking, growling, and snapping when handlers approached. 3/13/26: Berthold is at the front of his kennel with a neutral body. As the handler attempts to leah him, he dodges it with his ahead. After several attempts, the handler lassos Berthold an brings him out he room. Once entering the street, a dog barks at Berthold; he then looks over at them, but breaks his focus on the og and continues to walk. Berthold walks ahead with mild leash tension. He doesn't react to passersby. He often increases leah tension to sniff certain spot. The handler then brings Berthold inside for his assessment (see notes). Afterwards, the handler returns him to his kennel with ease.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Berthold so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to Berthold's fearful behavior, and reported bite history we recommend a home with no children. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,Anxiety,Bite history (human)

Potential challenges comments:: Resource Guarding: During the toy portion of his assessment Berthold was noted to become tense when attempting to reach for the toy with the assess-a-hand. We advise against ever removing items from Berthold's possession without safely trading for an item or greater or equal value. Please see handout on Resource Guarding. Fearful Defensive: During his intake and medical exams Berthold was described as nervous and aloof and reportedly attempted to flee during medical exams. While in care Berthold has escalated to hard barking and snapping at handlers. It is important to move slowly with Berthold, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. Bite History (Human): Please see the other box above for more details. Please see handout on Bite History and Potential for Future Aggression. Anxiety: During his behavioral assessment Berthold was observed to consistently pant throughout the entire interaction. We recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving him other things to focus on to alleviate his anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training only should be used. Please see handout on Generalized Anxiety.
