Hera
Hello, my name is Hera. My animal id is #237887. I am a female gray dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 1 months 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a aco - impound on 9/27/2025.
Hera is at risk due to behavior concerns. She arrived at the care centers as a stray with little known history. During her intake she allowed all handling but paced around the room, attempted to flee, and escalated to leash biting. Throughout her stay she has continued to display rope reactivity, often reported to leash bite intensely, sometimes near the handlers' hands. On leash, she has been observed to vocalize, pull very hard towards other dogs, spin, and as previously mentioned, attempts to leash bite. She has remained fairly receptive to the use of treats. Medically, Hera is apparently healthy.

I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I love to be loved, but on my own terms! Let's brush up on some canine body language together! I'm ready to learn! I need a patient person who has the time to work on training with me. I would do best in a home with only adult humans.

Summary:: 10/2/25: Hera greets another dog at the gate with a tense body while growling.
Summary (4):: 11/1/25:Hera is at the front muzzle punching the kennel door and jumping up and spinning around. She is doing this in a repetitive pattern as the handler is unlocking the kennel. The leash is presented and Hera is offered a treat. Hera is easily leashed and treats are tossed as she exits the kennel. Hera pulls moderately out of the room and downstairs. She is taken to the street where she pulls moderately to hard. She relieves herself and spots a dog ahead of her. Hera stares at the dog with a tense body. Handler calls to her and leads her away with treats which she is receptive. Hera is then walked away and walked back to the shelter. Hera is returned to her kennel without issue.
Summary (5):: 10/25/25: Hera is jumping, bouncing from front kennel door to side wall repeatedly as handler approaches kennel door. Handler pre-emptively drops a treat trail exiting room. Hera is panting, strained face, Hera is leashed using a treat lure, Hera eats some of the treat trail once exiting kennel, is pull hard, scrambling. Hera on elevator does jump once with soft body as handler presents treat, but cued into a sit, and accepts petting with neutral body, wagging tail while in a sit position. Hera pulls hard out of elevator, once across the street Hera is switched to a 'rope harness'. Hera pulls hard down the sidewalk. Hera is more distracted, is able to cued to check in but not consistently, is also able to be cued into a sit position but is not consistent. Hera sees LMB and SMB on separate occasions, she looks and fixates, pauses walk but is verbally cued away. Upon re-entering MACC, she is switched back to a slip leash with pre-attached clip. Hera pulls hard into kennel room, when in front of kennel she vomits what looks like a full portion of kibble. Hera re-enters kennel safely. 10/24/25: It is reported on the behavior board that Hera is pulling so hard that she is choking herself and throwing up. Using a slip lead harness helped. (Sign added). 10/22/25: Hera is at the front of her kennel when the handler approaches. As the handler unlocks the kennel, Hera jumps and spins on her hind legs a few times. Hera also begins to fixate on and then bites the leash as the handler is about to leash her. The handler then gives her a treat, which she takes hard, and tosses more inside her kennel. The handler is able to leash Hera as she eats them. Before bringing Hera out the kennel, the handler tosses treats on the floor. Once Hera is brought out, she eats the treats while walking out the room. While walking throughout the building and entering the driveway, there are dogs present, but Hera does not react to them. She stops to relieve herself a few times. On the street, Hera walks ahead of the handler with tension on the leash, slightly pulling forward; she also walks in a zig-zag pattern. Hera shows no interest in most passersby, except for one; as the passerby walks past Hera and the handler to cross the street, Hera pulls in their direction. When walking back to shelter, Hera lightens the tension on leash. The handler is able to clip their leash and return Hera to her kennel with ease
Summary (6):: 10/21/25: It is reported that Hera was leash biting intensely while exiting the kennel room. Hera was up on her hind legs biting and holding onto the leash near the handler's hands. While on the street, Hera was reported to be frantic, pulling forward, and zig zagging back and forth. When seeing another dog, Hera would pull hard until she was rearing up on her rear legs. 10/18//25: Hera is at the front of her kennel as handler approaches. She is leashed while distracted with some treats and makes an attempt to mouth the leash but is easily redirected with the treats and is removed from kennel. Hera pulls moderately out to the hall and exits out to the street with handler. While outside she passes multiple dogs and while waiting for dogs to pass, darts around on leash attempting to continue moving, she is difficult to focus at this time. Hera walks with handler on the street and continues to pull moderately. She relieves herself on her walk and accepts treats tossed by handler while walking. After a while she is brought back inside and allows handler to clip her leash before returning her to kennel. 10/8/25: Hera is standing at the front of her kennel, neutral body, soft wagging tail. She takes treats through the bars from handlers hand. AS handler unlocks the kennel, she jumps up onto the bars, barking. Handler lures her down with a treat then leashes her using more treats. Once secured she is removed and walked on the street. She is hypervigilant, head up looking around. She watches people across the street, stopping to watch, running to the gap in between the cars to stop and watch again. She is neutral bodied. Handler calls her and she looks at handler is offered a treat. She the looks up at the leash draping behind her head, bouncing slightly on her toes before she refocused on the environment. She is easily returned to kennel. 9/30/25: Hera is towards the front of her kennel with a neutral body, jumping on the bars as the handler approaches. She is easily leashed and removed from kennel. She would have a mild pull ahead of the handler while exiting the room with ease. She is then taken for a street walk, where she would relieve herself for a few minutes due to constipation. Shortly after, she would remain aloof throughout her walk and would watch dogs with a tense body but wouldn't agress past that. She is easily redirected with a treat tossed ahead of her and mild leash pressure the opposite way. She would jump on the handler, soliciting pets. She is then easily clipped and returned to kennel.
Summary (7):: 9/29/25: Hera is at the front of her kennel with a neutral body as the handler approaches. As handler is unlocking the kennel, she would begin to jump up and bark towards the neighboring kennels and hop back and forth in the kennel. She is fed high value treats through the bars, and is easily leashed using the treat lure. As she exits the kennel, she would become tense and would have a mild pull ahead of the handler, but is removed from the room with ease. She is then taken to the yard and begins to relieve herself. She would watch dogs and people passby with a neutral body, she would tense up as she would watch birds. She is tossed treats throughout her walk, which she was well receptive too and would jump up on the handler soliciting pets. Handler had a different handler walk closer to the pen with a dog, to see her reactivity as previously mentioned. She would sniff the fence with a tense body, but would remove herself and walk the opposite way afterward. That interaction is then ceased, shortly after she is easily clipped and returned to her kennel with no issue. 9/28/25: Hera is standing at the very front of the kennel barking and her body vibrating with dilated pupils and a tense body. Her facial muscles are tense and her mouth pursed in between barks. She stands on her hind legs continuing to vibrate and bark, frantically jumping and pawing at the door. She is treat receptive but when the door is opened she fixates on attempting to jump out from the top. Handler has to lasso her from a high angle and a second rope is placed as well. She is removed on a double leash. As she is walked out of the room she is almost horizontal, pushing off her back legs on the wall, attempting to kennel fight. In the yard she is kept on a double leash for the majority of the walk as she remains vigilant and tense. She relieves herself and shakes off. The second rope is removed and she is kept on a single in the pen. It needs to be noted that there were no other dogs in the yard at the time. She sniffs her surroundings before being brought back in on a single rope. She did not kennel fight coming in and went in her kennel no issue. 9/28/25: ASC reports that Hera is highly dog reactive. Stating that she saw a dog from far away and began vocalizing and pulling very hard towards the other dog. Hera would then spin and attempt to leash bite.
Date of initial:: 9/29/2025
Summary:: Wagging tail initially and pacing around room, leash bites. Attempts to flee
ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Hera so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to poor impulse control we recommend a home with no children.
Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Fearful,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Leash-biting
Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manners: Hera is observed to jump up on handlers in a social seeming manner. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Fearful: During her medical exam Hera attempted to flee. It should always be their choice to approach a new person or thing. Hera would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period. On Leash Reactivity/ Leash Biting: Hera has been observed to fixate on other dogs while on leash. After reacting to a dog Hera spins and attempt to bite the leash. During her medical exam Hera was also observed to bite the leash. Hera will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration. Please see handout on Leash Manners.
