Luna Tides
Hello, my name is Luna Tides. My animal id is #221397. I am a desexed female fawn dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 6 months 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 2/27/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- eviction.
Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.
Pre-Screener FormLuna Tides is currently at risk due to behavior concerns. Luna Tide's previous owner reports that she will hard bark at unfamiliar people, kids, dogs and cats but can also be friendly and outgoing with them as well. Luna Tides has been soft and wiggly when interacting handlers at the care center. However, she has displayed dog reactivity, pulling towards them on walks and grabbing their tails as they passed her pop up crate. This incident did not result in broken skin. Recently, Luna Tides has been observed to bite at the kennel bars. Medically, she is apparently healthy.

Details on my behavior are...
Behavior Condition: 1. Green
Luna tides had a soft wiggly body and a soft wagging tail, she would approach handler very socially. Eager for petting and retrieving treats. She would stay close to the owner and by her sister, Carmela. When MC Luna Tides, she would become jumpy but allowed for scanning which was negative. Luna Tides allowed for me to leash her, not able to collar her due to her overly jumpiness. When bringing her to the hallway, she would pancake on the ground. She was called with baby talk and a couple of treats in order to come. She was taken to medical for vaccines. When entering her kennel, Luna Tides did have to be muscled in as she would retreat away and stay stuck listening to the dogs barking.

Summary:: 3/12/25: Luna Tides greets a known dog at the gate with a tense body. She is wagging her tail and pushes her snoot through the gate. She snaps when the other dog presses her nose in the gate as well.
Summary (7):: 3/22/25: Luna is observed to be clawing at the kennel bars when the room is active. 3/19/25: Luna is observed to be biting the kennel bars. 3/12/25 Luna Tides is at the front of the popup kennel, panting and whining and periodically biting at the kennel bars. As handler attempts to leash, she begins barking and lunging at the dog across from her. Handler tosses treats to reset and attempts to leash again. Luna Tides snaps at handlers' hand and attempts to push her way out of the kennel. Handler holds treats in front of her and attempts leashing again. Luna Tides turns to bite at the kennel bars and snap at handler's knee from inside the kennel. A different handler reattempted with a treat lure. She did not go for the treat but was able to be leashed while attempting to push herself out of the kennel. She is removed from the popup and able to be moved to a large kennel without further issue. 3/12/25: Handler is standing next to Luna's pop up crate. Luna begins to jump up and press her muzzle against the bars. As the handler is leaning over the crate to write on the whiteboard Luna begins to bite the crate bars near the handlers legs. This behavior stops once the handler moves away from the crate. 3/11/25- Luna tides is at the front of her crate with a loose and wiggly body, handler unlocks the door to leash her and she pushes herself half way out of her pop up crate. Handler pushed her back in and reset to leash. They used a treat lure and she was leashed second time. When exiting her pop up, she pulled towards the other dogs in the room. Handler muscled her out of the room and took her for a street walk. She zig zags pulling moderately to sniff different spots, she will go between handler's legs throughout also. She saw a pigeon and attempted to chase it. When people past her she will pull towards them wanting to greet. She was taken for her assessment, she took treats and was very wiggly when trying to collar. She would jump on handlers seeking attention and gently taking treats. She was easily releashed and returned to her pop up crate without issue. 3/11/25: ACS report that Lune Tides is biting dogs as they walk by. They bit a small dogs tail through the crate bars. No broken skin. It is also reported that she will bite handlers shirts through the crate.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),No cats,Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to mouthie behavior we recommend an adult only home. No Cats: Due to hard barking, lunging, and attempting to snap we recommend a home with no cats. Single Pet Home/ No Dog Parks: Due to hard barking and lunging towards unfamiliar dogs and biting a dog through the crate we recommend a single pet home with no trips to the dog park. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.
Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Bite history (dog)
Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manners/ Mouthiness: Luna has been observed to jump up on handlers and mouth their hands with mild pressure. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach them to control their impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Please see handout on Mouthiness. Fearful Defensive: Luna's previous owner states that she will hard bark towards strangers. It is important to move slowly with Luna, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression. Bite History (Dog): Luna has been observed to bite another dog through her crate bars, this bite did not break skin. Please see handout on Bite History and Potential for Future Aggression. On Leash Reactivity: Luna's previous owner states that she will lunge towards unfamiliar dogs. During her stay in the care center Luna has been observed to react towards other dogs while in a crate. Once she bit a dogs tail through the crate bars, this bite did not break skin. Luna will need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach them to look at you rather than other dogs. We recommend a front clip harness to help manage this behavior. Please see handout on On Leash Reactivity and Barrier Frustration.
