Behavior Condition: 4. Orange

Date of intake:: 2/16/2025

Spay/Neuter status:: No

Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Stray, No known history

Date of assessment:: 2/17/2025

Summary:: Upon arrival Chase was in an airline crate with a low head while growling towards handlers. Chase was receptive to treats and took them with a soft mouth. Chase allowed handlers to leash him when lifting the back of the crate. When they approached the kennel Chase began thrashing and localizing loudly. When handlers attempted to use leash pressure to guide Chase into kennel he began alligator rolling, head whipping and leash biting. Due to high levels of fear, stress, and anxiety Chase is not a candidate for a handling assessment at this time.

Summary (7):: 2/17/25: Chase is at the front of the kennel when handler approaches. He begins growling when the handler speaks softly. Handler tosses treats and Chase is not receptive. 2/16/25: Chase is laying at the front of the kennel when handler approached. Chase is tense with wide eyes. Once the handler is spotted Chase begins hard barking and growling. Handler kneels, turns to the side and speaks in a soft tone. Chase continues to hard bark and growl. Handler ends interaction.

Date of intake:: 2/16/2025

Summary:: Thrashing, alligator rolling, and leash biting

Date of initial:: 2/16/2025

Summary:: Hard barking; tense; not interested with treats; high FAS. Opted to sedate

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Chase so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: New Hope Only

Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behavior we recommend a home with no children. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended.

Potential challenges: : Fearful,Leash-biting

Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/ Leash Biting: During intake Chase was observed to thrash, alligator roll, head whip, and bite the leash. It is important to always go slow and give DOG the option to walk away from any social interaction. They should never be forced to approach anything that they are uncomfortable with or submit to petting or handling. It should always be their choice to approach a new person or thing. Chase would do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to their new surroundings. Please see handout on Decompression Period.
