Animal Profile

Turkey

Hello, my name is Turkey. My animal id is #215623. I am a male black dog at the Staten Island Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years 2 months 4 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 11/29/2024.

Turkey is at risk for behavior reasons. He has been social with staff and volunteers; however, he has some handling sensitivities when the leash applies pressure on certain areas of his body. On one occasion, Turkey snapped at a staff member when uncomfortable. He has shown the potential to become over aroused by novel objects in the yard, some examples are the shovel and scrub brush. He is treat and toy motivated but has trouble maintaining focus. He would do well with an experienced, patient owner who can provide daily mental and physical activity. Medically, he is apparently healthy.

This pet needs emergency placement. Please click here to go to our emergency placement page for more information. Turkey is an energetic and social young dog who enjoys being around people and seeks attention through playful behaviors like jumping, licking, and leaning in. He is highly sociable, eagerly approaches when called, and can be calm during soft handling. However, he has some challenges with impulse control, often displaying social hyperarousal by jumping up and becoming overexcited in stimulating environments. He also struggles with anxiety, likely aggravated by the shelter's stressful atmosphere, and needs a calm, structured environment to thrive. Turkey would do best in a home without young children, as his lack of basic manners and tendency to react impulsively can lead to inappropriate behaviors like jumping or mouthing. An active household with experienced owners who are committed to positive reinforcement, force-free training will help him learn impulse control and manage his excitement. With continued training and patience, Turkey will make a loving companion, especially for someone willing to help him work through his anxieties and guide him with consistency and care.

Summary:: relaxed body, allowed all handling

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4

Recommendations:: No children (under 13)

Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to lack of basic manners and poor impulse control, we recommend a home with no children.

Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Social hyperarousal,Handling/touch sensitivity,Anxiety,Low threshold for arousal

Potential challenges comments:: Basic manners/poor impulse control: Turkey is a young, energetic dog. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Leave it", "Sit/Stay", "Down" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners and Impulse Control. Handling/touch sensitivity: Turkey is uncomfortable with certain handling. He will have a negative reaction to certain pressure applied by the leash, for instance if the leash is up behind his head, he may spin and seek escape. Additionally, when a rope harness is fashioned, he will bite at the leash. Once instance he snapped at a handler when the leash was around his front leg. Please see handling and touch sensitivity. Social hyperarousal: Turkey quickly becomes over aroused in the presence of people, jumping up frequently. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used to teach Turkey to remain calm when people and other exciting things are around. He should be rewarded with treats when calm. If he escalates to jumping or mouthing, people should immediately walk away from and separate themselves from Turkey. Please see handout on Arousal. Anxiety: Turkey seems to be highly anxious during socialization sessions. The shelter is a stressful environment and because we have no known behavior information, we cannot be sure he will experience anxiety in his new home. If Turkey displays anxious behavior in their future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving Turkey other things to focus on to alleviate his anxiety. Please see handout on Generalized Anxiety. Low threshold for arousal: Turkey can become aroused when interacting with novel objects. On one occasion he became over aroused when staff was using a shovel to shovel snow. He escalated to biting the shovel and it had to be removed completely from the yard to interrupt his behavior. He may grab at other large objects in the yard such as a scrub brush. Please see handout on Arousal.
