Draco
Hello, my name is Draco. My animal id is #197067. I am a desexed male red brown dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 6 years 8 months 2 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 9/17/2024.
Draco is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Draco has not been acclimating well to the shelter environment despite best efforts to keep him comfortable. Draco in his kennel will continuously hard bark throughout the day, panting heavily with a strained expression even with enrichment to try and settle him. Outside of his kennel, Draco is social and playful with staff. Medically, Draco is receiving treatment for pododermatitis and otitis, believe to be caused due to allergies.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I lived with children in my previous home. I would do best in a home without very tiny humans, although I could be open to older human children once I meet them. I have been known to shower my favorite people in love! I am playful and cute! I will need appropriate toys and positive outlets for my energy. Not only do I pull at heart strings, but I also pull on leash! I will need someone to help me with my leash manners. I am eager to learn and would love to keep learning cues and tricks with you! A volunteer writes: 2024 has not been Draco's year. At 6 years old it's not clear what his life has been. We know he came from a tumultuous home, where he lived well with a young child as well as older ones. They described him as a gentle giant and a cuddle bug, a lovely way for a dog to be described. Quickly adopted, Draco showed up once again. This time dropped off at a police precinct a few months later. In spite of whatever has come before Draco is a sweet mushy guy, the gentle giant who was described when he was surrendered in the spring. His previous home described him as friendly and tolerant with dogs, and at the shelter he was conflicted in his greetings but has not been observed to be reactive. His previous home also said he's tolerant with cats.

Due to his vet-recommended diet, there are no treats available. Draco then walks around the yard, exploring, sniffing, and taking in the fresh air. Once he appears to be finished, Draco walks over to the handler, sitting next to their feet. Draco does take occasional breaks to investigate scents or relieve himself. While waiting to cross the street, Draco checks in with handlers, seeking contact by leaning his body against the legs. Once in the play yard, a drag leash is attached and Draco has zoomies around the play yard. He stops to throw himself into legs or laps, seeking attention. Date of initial:: 9/19/2024
Summary:: tries to escape but wags tail, tense body, responds to commands well
ENERGY LEVEL:: Drake is described as active and enthusiastic. He will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. We recommend feeding with puzzle feeders and food-dispensing toys. And we recommend using force-free, reward-based training techniques for Drake.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 2
Recommendations:: No young children (under 5)
Recommendations comments:: Due to poor basic manners we recommend a home with no young children.
Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control,Anxiety,Strength/leash pulling
Potential challenges comments:: Basic Manners: Drake has been observed to jump up on handlers in a social manners. It is recommended that default behaviors such as "Sit" and "Off" are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward-based training only is recommended. Please see handout on Basic Manners. Anxiety: Drakes previous owner states that Drake is anxious in the home he will pace, whine and be unable to settle. If Drake displays anxious behavior in his future home, we recommend puzzle toys, long walks, and giving him other things to focus on to alleviate their anxiety. Positive reinforcement, force-free training should be used. Please see handout on General Anxiety. Leash Pulling: Drake is a strong dog with the capability to pull the average adopter. His adopter must be prepared and able to handle a dog of this size and strength. It is recommended that he be walked on a front clip harness or head halter, which will help diminish their strength through leverage, and that he be trained using positive reinforcement, reward based training to not pull on leash. Please see handout on Leash Manners.
