Animal Profile

Kit Kat

Hello, my name is Kit Kat. My animal id is #210999. I am a desexed female brown tabby cat at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 6 years 1 months 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a stray on 9/27/2024.

Kit Kat is on the At Risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

They may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to their new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.

KNOWN HISTORY:: Kit Kat was brought in as a stray, there is no known information on their behavior history in a home environment.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 10/6/24 Vol. Kit Kat was on the shelf, hunched up. I opened the kennel door and put treats near her. She backed into the corner, looking frightened. I waited a few minutes and touched her with the scratcher tool. She flinched and lowered her ears. I left a toy for her and ended the interaction, as she did not seem to be enjoying it. She remained on the shelf, gradually relaxing and putting her ears upright. 10/12/24 FB58 Sitting hunched up at the back of his shelf with a tense face and body. He backs away when I place a tray with squeeze up in front of him and remains tense and frozen as he watches me. Does not eat treat. 10/13/24 Vol. Kit Kat was hunched up on the shelf. I opened the door and spoke to her. She moved as far to the back as possible. I dropped some Temptations near her and she flinched every time the treat hit the ground, startled by the sound. I offered her Squeeze Up but she did not want it. She stayed at the very rear of the kennel. I did not attempt to pet her because she seemed to be very frightened. 10/15/24 FB85 Sitting in litterbox with a tense face and body, eyes wide. When cubby door opens she hisses and looks out into the main area. She pauses with a hunched body and then jumps to the shelf and presses against the back before hissing again. Not interested interaction at this time. 10/18/24 FB79 Sitting frozen at the top part of her kennel on the shelf, Kit Kat has wide eyes with a tense body and tightly wrapped tail. She isn't interested in any of the treats offered and watches closely as the tool is brought closer which she slowly backs away towards the back corner of her kennel. She tolerates a few pets on her head before she start lip licking. I leave her some toys and respect her space. 10/21/24 FB1261 On perch upon approach, squished all the way towards the back with a tense, low body and tail wrapped around feet. She hisses when spoken to and she flinches when offered treats and then a toy. She is very nervous. I speak to her softly and end the session. Not interested in interaction at this time. 11/4/24 FB1261 In cat den upon approach, completely hidden from view. She does not come out when offered treats or a catnip toy. I speak softly to her before ending the session. Hopefully she explores the offerings later when the room has less traffic. 11/8/24 FB79 Inside of her den, Kit Kat very quickly exists and runs to the top part of her kennel when i open the kennel door and speak softly. Showing no interest in being bothered she has wide/dilated eyes and wraps her tail around her body when i toss treats near her - when i bring the tool closer in attempt to touch she backs herself into the corner as she closely watches the tool. 11/11/24 Vol Kit Kat was on the shelf, with ears lowered, watching me. I put treats near her but she did not eat them. I petted her with a scratcher tool. She tolerated it but flinched each time I moved the tool on her body. She is still fearful. -GAN

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Kit Kat was hunched in the back of their kennel as the assessor approached, body and face tense, ears tilted and tail wrapped tightly around their body. Kit Kat avoided eye contact when spoken to and they remained frozen in place as the kennel door opened. Kit Kat tolerated petting along their head and body while flinching, raising their body a bit as if trying to find an escape route past the assessor, and then settling back down to squint their eyes and being lip licking. Pick up was not attempted at this time to reduce stress. 10/30/24 Kit Kat displayed similar behaviors during her reassessment. Kit Kat tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter, and may be intimidated by small children. They may be a little more independent, and may need time to warm up to their new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, adult only home.
