I am not one to sit still and will love interactive playtime in my new home! I would do best in a home without very tiny humans, although I could be open to older human children once I meet them. Summary:: Bleu was surrendered to BACC as a stray. Limited information was provided and his behavioral history with other dogs is unknown at this time. 12/2/22: While off-leash at the Care Center, Bleu is introduced to a novel female dog. He approaches and sniffs her with a soft body/wagging tail before walking away to solicit attention gently from handlers.
Summary (2):: 12/14 (pm): Handlers approach Bleu's kennel to take him out and assess his behavior on leash. He is sleeping when they approach but immediately comes forward for easy leashing. He is visibly eager, anxious and wagging. He is kept on a short leash and run out of the room to avoid arousal. He successfully exits the room/building without jumping or mouthing although he pulls moderately to hard on his leash and appears to be anxiously panting. He is otherwise loose on the walk and checks in with handlers often. He accepts treats gently from handlers and becomes slightly jumpy but is easily deterred with treats. He sniffs the ground intently and accepts petting, leaning in with a wagging tail and loose body. On his way back into BACC, handlers safely pause in the hall when a staff member asks them a question. Bleu becomes anxious/aroused as he stands and briefly waits and begins to jump up/attempts to mouth at handler with moderate force/pressure, jumping up high and snapping towards their stomach/chest. Handler shortens their leash and he pauses, but he begins to jump and mouth more intensely before the handler shortened their leash further at which point he stops. Handler runs him back into kennel where he returns without issue. 12/14(am): (Late entry) Upon exiting his kennel for a relief walk, Bleu reportedly becomes immediately over aroused and jumps/mouths repeatedly at handler. He jumps up to chest-height and repeatedly bites at their isolation gown in a state of over arousal. Once outdoors, he continues to try and jump/bite at handler but ceases after a moment and refocuses on the walk/sniffing. 12/10: Bleu is reported to jump and repeatedly mouth at a familiar staff member while passing them in the hallway. He is mouthing with mild/moderate pressure and is described as over aroused. 12/4: Upon being removed from his kennel for his morning walk, a handler's hoodie falls onto Bleu. He begins thrashing and flailing. As the handler removes the hoodie, Bleu whips around and bites the handler on the thigh/leg area. The bite did not break skin but did leave teeth marks and minor swelling. 12/2/2: (Late entry) Handlers briefly interact with Bleu in the play yard and he is loose bodied, social and wagging for the duration of the session. He checks in with handlers, allows petting and leans in gently, becoming more playful and loose as the session goes on. He is easily re-leashed and retuned to kennel without issue.
Date of intake:: 12/1/2022
Summary:: Playful, allowed handling
Date of initial:: 12/2/2022
Summary:: Loose body, jumps on staff
IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: 12/4: Upon being removed from his kennel for his morning walk, a handler's hoodie fell partially onto Bleu. He begins thrashing and flailing; the handler removes the hoodie and Bleu whips around and bites the handler on the thigh/leg area. The bite did not break the skin but did leave red marks and minor swelling. 12/14(am): (Late entry) Upon exiting his kennel for a relief walk, Bleu reportedly becomes immediately over aroused and jumps/mouths repeatedly at handler. BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 3
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: Due to the high level of jumping and mouthing when aroused, we recommend a home with older children
Potential challenges: : Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Low threshold for arousal,Bite history (human),Basic manners/poor impulse control,Fearful,Anxiety
Potential challenges comments:: Basic manners/poor impulse control: Bleu jumps on staff when he wants treats. He should learn to sit and wait when he is excited. Please see the handout on Basic manners/poor impulse control. Bite History (human)/Fearful: Bleu did bite a handler as a response to being startled. He did not break the skin but did leave teeth marks and minor swelling. It is important to always go slow with Bleu and allow him the space and opportunity to move away when uncomfortable. Please see handout on the Decompression Period. Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition: Bleu takes treats with moderate pressure. He should learn impulse control when he is around treats. Please see the handout on Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition. Anxiety: Bleu is highly anxious in the care centers. He will need mental and physical enrichment to help manage this behavior. Please see the handout on General Anxiety. Low threshold for arousal: Bleu displayed a low threshold for arousal when he was anxious. Bleu should learn to manage his arousal when excited. Please see the handout on Arousal.
