Animal Profile

Shadow

Hello, my name is Shadow. My animal id is #244530. I am a desexed female gray cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 9 years 1 months old.

I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 12/30/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- homeless.

Shadow is on the at-risk list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to her stress levels, it is in her best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give her plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

Let's get to know each other a bit more...

What my friends at ACC say about me: I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you. I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I will flourish in a calm environment and a low-traffic home. Shadow is not open to interaction at this time and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. Because her previous owner reports she can be sweet in a home environment, we believe the behavior seen in the care center is mostly shelter-specific and this cat would make a great pet, but is really struggling in the shelter environment. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, home with adopters who are willing to work with a cat who needs time and patience to help her adjust to their new home.. A volunteer writes: Up until a few weeks ago, Shadow was part of a household with two cat siblings to wile away the day with. Then her person became homeless, and Shadow came to stay with us. Fearful at first, Shadow has been trying her best--slowly coming out of her hidey den to greet humans, accepting pettings, and exchanging slow blinks with all the team members who are giving this gorgeous lady extra TLC. We're proud of her progress, but we know she'll really blossom if she can find a new pet parent who offers her a quiet place to get her bearings. Even the most social cats don't like the sudden disruption of losing their home, and it hits shy, sensitive cats like Shadow the hardest. Can you help our girl? Consider making her the newest member of your family and arrange a meet and greet today!

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 12/31/25 Tightly crouched anxiously looking around from inside the den. She allows petting with the scratcher tool but slowly turns around facing the back and hisses lowering her head. Ended to help reduce stress. 1/3/26 PRIOR ASSESSMENT: Upon approach, Shadow is crouched in the back of her den, holding a paw up and looking towards the portal exit as if to flee, eyes wide and pupils dilated, and body tense as the kennel door is opened. She tolerates all petting with the scratcher tool but remains highly tense, body rippling and looking back at the scratcher tool as she is pet before attempting to flee. Interaction is ended to reduce FAS. 01/04/26 Vol. Resting in den away from portal. Did not move to investigate a cup of Temptations and squeeze-up dropped into den. Raised the cover to peek and was facing forward with widely dilated eyes. Remained frozen and did not return blinks when spoken to. 01/05/26 FB73 Shadow is laying in her den, eyes wide and pupils dilated as the handler approaches. When the kennel door is opened and the den cover is lifted, Shadow tenses, not moving as she stares at the handler. She tolerates petting on the head and cheeks with the scratcher tool but leans away to avoid contact, hissing after she is pet. She did not respond to treats, hissing again when a treat is offered to her with the scratcher tool. A felt square with feliway is left in the kennel and interaction is ended. 01/07/26 ACFR Shadow was in her den when the handler approached. She crouched deep into her den when the scratcher tool is presented to her, but does sniff hesitantly. Shadow allowed petting in the head with the tool. With a slow approach the handler was able to get close to Shadow with hands and Shadow tolerated slow finger strokes on the top of the head from the handler, yet stayed tense and in the den during the interaction. 1/9/26 Vol. Shadow was in her den with the cover down. She moved to the back of the den when I opened the kennel door. She watched me through the side opening of the den with her whiskers back and ears forward. She slow blinked and sniffed Churu offered on a scratcher extended into the opening of the den. She allowed gentle scratching with the smooth side of the scratcher through the den opening. I left her with some Churu in a tray at the front of the kennel and a catnip mouse. 1/10/26 Vol. Inside den throughout interaction. Looked at me when I approached, spoken to and door opened.  Blinked at me a couple times and I gave her a slow blink. I offered dry treats on scratcher tool. Moved back & ignored treats.  Left them inside the den. Offered churu on scratcher tool. Ignored.  Soon moved within the den and was lying down facing forward when I lifted the cover briefly. Pet briefly with scratcher tool. Flinched. End of interaction. ~CONINUED IN GAN

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Shy ,Timid,Skittish,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period

Potential challenges comments:: Shadow has displayed fearful behavior during their stay in the care center and has displayed distance-increasing behavior with extended handling. Fear aggression can occur when a cat perceives a threat and may escalate if they cannot escape. A fearful cat will feel more relaxed when given options, so provide her with the chance to move closer, investigate, or interact with you. Be sure to offer incentive such as treats or play time whenever the cat makes a small positive step. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to desensitize your cat to their fear stimulus. Shadow should be given a slow introduction to the home, one room at a time starting in a small room like a bathroom with food, litter and water because behaviors seen at the Care Center [hides, fearful, skittish, handling avoidance, swatting] strongly suggest that she will hide if allowed. Interact with her in this room until he seems sufficiently confident that you feel you can introduce her to the next part of the home without running the risk that she will hide. Please speak to an adoption counselor for additional information on methods to help introduce your cat to the home.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 4

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Shadow has not been doing well during her stay here and is now actively hissing and swatting hard. When approached inside the den with treats on the scratching tool, she immediately swatted and lashed out at the tool. Shadow is not open to interaction at this time and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. Because her previous owner reports she can be sweet in a home environment, we believe the behavior seen in the care center is mostly shelter-specific and this cat would make a great pet, but is really struggling in the shelter environment. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced, home with adopters who are willing to work with a cat who needs time and patience to help her adjust to their new home.
