Animal Profile

Green Bin

Hello, my name is Green Bin. My animal id is #255328. I am a male black cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 1 months 2 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 5/24/2026.

Sorry, this pet is for new hope partners only.

Pre-Screener Form

Green Bin is on the at-risk list due to behavior. He is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. He has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to his stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. He would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give his plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I'm an independent kitty who likes to do my own thing. I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you. I am looking for a home with a patient person. Green Bin tolerates attention and petting but appears fearful or stressed in the shelter. He may be a little more independent and may need time to warm up to his new home. We recommend this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents. Due to the behavior shown, he may not be a great fit for young children. Any home with older children prepared to adopt this cat should conduct a thorough interaction and endeavor to monitor this cat around their children to prevent these behaviors from being reinforced. A volunteer writes: I know Green Bin likes to stay committed to his get off my lawn vibes, and I respect it, but I don't think it's the whole story. In fact, I know it isn't. In his previous home, Green Bin was known as a very sweet cat. Situations change and sometimes we have no choice but to change along with them, which could at least partially be why Green Bin has been struggling a bit to settle himself into shelter life. Green Bin responds to a little bit of extra time, patience, and gentleness with slow blinks that could melt anyone's heart.

Details on my behavior are...

Behavior Condition: 4. Orange

KNOWN HISTORY:: Green Bin was brought in with limited information on his behavior history in a home environment. The owner stated that in all the 3 years she has had Green Bin except for the recent scratch incident (see Potential Challenges for more details) she has never had any behavior problems with Green Bin and Green Bin was always sweet.

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: Prior assessment 5/31/26 Green Bin is laying in his den, eyes wide, pupils dilated, body tense and ears forward as the assessor approaches. When the kennel door is opened and the den cover is lifted, Green Bin hisses, ears going back. Treats are offered but he does not show interest in them, crouching forward and beginning to low growl. Green Bin tolerates all petting with the scratcher tool but leans away, continues to low growl, backs himself further into the den, and begins hissing to avoid contact. The interaction is ended to reduce stress. 6/7/26 Vol. Resting in den. Poked head out portal and hissed and lip licked. Allowed cup of Temptations and squeeze-up to be dropped on edge of portal but swatted wildly as tool was withdrawn. Watched Temptations tossed in through the bars but didn't come out to eat. Enjoyed the cat dancer toy, batting at it from within the den. Came out of den after I walked away and sniffed around. Sniffed more Temptations tossed in but didn't eat. 6/9/26 Vol. He was sitting in his litter box when I approached. Hissed when the kennel door was opened. Attempted to give him Squeeze-ups but he hissed again and swatted at the clicker. He put his swatting skills to use with the cat dancer; he played with it for several minutes. Got some slow blinks at the end of our interaction. 6/12/26 Vol. He stuck his head out of the hidey box and meowed as I raised the privacy screen and removed lock and then he pulled back. Waved pipe cleaner toy - Green Bin grabbed it with his mouth and pulled hard to try and get it into the box - he tried a few times, and it didn't work. I put in treat bowl, and he came right out and immediately started to eat - allowing head touches with hand - eating greedily and pushing the bowl up. when finished he pulled back erect and stared intently, ears starting to turn and growled. He remained sitting erect. Kept door open and sweet talked and ended interaction 6/14/26 Vol. Green Bin was sitting in his litter box, with a neutral face. However, once I put my hand in the kennel, he swatted at me. He was displaying offensive aggressive, swatting hard at the scratcher tool and hissing. 6/20/26 Vol. Came up to the front when approached, spoken to and door opened. Hissed. Lightly tossed treats through the door. Ate a few treats. Tried to pet with scratcher tool through the door bars. Hissed and swatted. Ate treats. 6/21/26 Vol. Green Bin was about the same as last week. He hissed as soon as I lifted the shoreline cover. He can be distracted with food (which vol. and I had to do to change his litter box) but only up to a point. He escalates very quickly. 7/8/26 FB73 Green Bin is laying in his litter box, observing the handler with wide eyes and a tense body. When he is softly spoken to and the handler attempts to offer treats with the scratcher tool, Green Bin hisses and swats hard at the tool to avoid contact.

ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Moderate

VOCAL:: Quiet

CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Calm,Curious,Skittish,Independent

POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,Other,New home adjustment period

Potential challenges comments:: Green Bin has a scratch history. In the home, chased a female cat and attempted to mate with her after she was introduced into the same area. When the owner intervened to separate the cats, the male cat redirected his arousal and frustration toward the person, scratching the owner on their arm and their neck. This behavior is consistent with redirected aggression, which can occur when a highly aroused cat is interrupted or unable to reach its intended target. The female cat was not injured.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : New Hope Only

RECOMMENDATIONS:: Adult only home

BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Green Bin was resting on top of his den when approached. He was alert with neutral eyes and ears held erect and forward, indicating curiosity and attention. He showed interest in treats; however, when contact was attempted using a scratcher tool, he hissed and swatted defensively. The interaction was ended to minimize stress and avoid further escalation. Green Bin is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He is stressed in the shelter environment and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
