Suga Suga
Hello, my name is Suga Suga. My animal id is #238021. I am a female brown brindle dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 4 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a agency on 9/29/2025.
Suga Suga is at risk due to behavioral concerns. Suga Suga arrived at the Care Center as a stray with no known history. Upon intake Suga Suga was noted to be easily leashed and entered kennel without issue. However, was noted to become fearful with potential for defensive escalation during medical exam and handling assessment; growling, head-whipping, tense body, and lip licking. Despite efforts to keep her comfortable, Suga Suga has been showing concerning levels of fear, anxiety, and stress (FAS) at the Care Center. Suga Suga is noted to be fearful of handlers, as staff members attempt to leash her she is noted to be tense bodied and tucked tail. Other times Suga Suga has been observed to be pacing in her kennel, muzzle-punching kennel bars, and hard barking at handlers as they approach. In one instance Suga Suga was noted to grab on to a staff member's clothing and attempt to pull into kennel. With familiar staff, she has allowed limited handling and petting. Medically, Suga Suga is apparently healthy.

I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets.

Summary (5):: 10/28/25- Suga suga us at the front of her kennel barking at handler with a tense body, they unlock and when putting the lock on the door Suga suga bites at the lock. Handler puts it on another kennel to avoid their finger getting caught. She is neutral bodied when handler leashes her and she readily exits kennel. When handler goes to take Suga suga to the street she baulks with her head low and tail tucked. Handler softly talks to her and tosses treats. She slowly follows just sniffing at the treats then baulks again. Handler applies light pressure to the leash and she follows them further down the hallway. When about to exit to the small garage again Suga baulks lowering her body. Handler stops and takes her to the play yard. She is placed on a drag leash and has a tense body with her ears pinned and tail tucked while in the pen. She paces a little then stands at the gate looking back and forth outside of the pen. Handler goes to her and pets her head, then do a light jog away from her and she follows momentarily then again runs to the gate. A dog walks by and she leans to sniff them then stops with a neutral body. Handler scratches her head, neck and chest for a little but Suga doesn't silicate attention after they stop petting. She is looking around the pen throughout her time in the yard and seeking exit. She is easily releashed and handler tosses treats into her kennel. She goes right in without issue.
Summary (6):: 10/23/2025 (Trainer Note: Suga Suga is standing at the front of kennel with a very tense body and whale eyeing at handler. As handler approaches she lunges and muzzle punches the door, attempting to bite handlers treat ouch and actually yanking a sign off their treat pouch into kennel. Handler tosses treats in the kennel which she does not consume. She is carefully leashed and removed from kennel. Handler attempts to walk her to the street but she begins to baulk and retreat backwards right before the hallway to the elevator. Handler attempts using treats and squeakers but is unsuccessful. Handler takes her to the yard. In the yard she is put on a drag leash. She remains tense, occasionally softening up when called over. She allows petting and sits on handlers foot while remaining vigilant. She regularly walks over to the fence and stands in front of the door, seeking exit. Handler attempts to call her over to interact but she continuously returns back to the fence. As she is returned she pulls very hard and sprints into kennel. 10/16/25: Suga Suga is at the front of her kennel with a slightly tense body and tucked tail as the handler approaches. The handler is able to leash her and walks her out the room. When attempting to walk in the hallway, Suga Suga stops walking; the handler tosses treats, which she sniffs but doesn't eat. The handler adds tension to the leash, but Suga begins to baulk. The handler attempts to bring her to the yard, and once they got to the door, Suga Suga baulks again, showing no interest to treats. As other dogs and staff members walk past her, Suga shows no interest. The handler clips their leash and returns her to her kennel. 10/15/25: ACS report that as they were putting a dog in the top kennel above Suga that she grabbed onto the handlers sweatshirt that was tied around their waist and pulled it into kennel. 10/12/25- K9 behavior was helping an ACS with a dog in a top kennel. As they were interacting with the dog on top Suga suga grabbed onto a part of handler's coat pulling into kennel. Handler tossed treats and she stopped to go in them. 10/12/25: Staff passes by Suga Suga's kennel. She is lying down and she quickly rushes to the front, muzzle punching the kennel bars with an open mouth while standing on her hind legs. Handler places their hand against the bars and she continues to muzzle punch the bars and hard barks towards the handler, with a tense body and whale eyes. Handler offers her treats and she takes them but remains tense and whale eyed while standing up on her hind legs against the kennel bars. Interaction is ended.
Summary (7):: 10/12/25: It was noted on the whiteboard that Suga Suga is "anxious on the street and wants to go back inside". 10/9/25: Suga Suga is standing at the front of her kennel with a tense body. As the handler attempts to leash her, Suga slowly moves away from the leash. The handler then tosses treats and uses the squeaker, which encourages to slowly move to the front. The handler is able to leash Suga, but she does not come out the kennel on her own. The handler tosses a treat on the ground in front of her kennel and she comes out. While walking to the exit, Suga Suga slows down her walking as she is behind the handler. The handler and staff member nearby speak to her in a baby voice; the handler also slowly adds pressure to the leash to encourage her to walk., which Suga follows. Before crossing the street, a dog sees Suga and reacts to her by barking, but Suga shows no interest in him. While crossing the street, she stops to relieve herself. Suga walks beside the handler when on the street. When a person is speaking loudly across the street, Suga stops walking and begins to pull in the direction of the shelter. The handler would speak to her in a baby voice, which encourages her to walk, but Suga would pull in the same direction. When walking back to the shelter, Suga adds tension on the leash, pulling forward. The handler is able to clip their leash, but as they attempt to return Suga Suga to her kennel, she refuses to enter. The handler tosses treats in her kennel, and then she enters; they also use a squeaker to distract Suga so they can remove the leash. 10/1/25: Suga Suga is observed to be darting back and forth from one side of the kennel to the other while barking. The room is being cleaned at the time. She barks at handler as they walk past. Her body is slightly tense as she bounces from one side to the other. 9/30/25: As handler approaches the kennel Suga Suga is towards the front with a wide eyes and a tense body. As the leash is shown, she would flinch and is then slowly leashed with a wide loop. She is then removed and taken for a street walk for her assessment. She would have a mild pull ahead of the handler, as she would watch people walk past she would begin to cower with ears pinned back and a slight tail tuck. As the walk progressed she would remain aloof and wouldn't interact with the handler. When Suga is returned for her assessment, she would begin to get tense as handler would try to collar her. She is then coaxed with treats and is then collared. She is then slowly re-leashed with a pre-clip and returned to kennel with ease.

ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Suga Suga so we cannot be certain of their behavior in a home environment. However, they will need daily mental and physical activity to stay engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct their energy and enthusiasm.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13): Due to fearful behaviors we recommend an adult only home.
Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful Defensive: Suag wa obsvered to growl, head whip and vocalize during his intake medical tasks. During his medical exam he was observed to have a tense body and tucked tail. It is important to move slowly with Suga, to build positive associations (treats/toys/praise), and to allow them to initiate interactions with new people. They should never be forced to greet or to interact if they are not comfortable and soliciting attention. Please see handout on Fearful and Defensive Aggression.
