Green
Hello, my name is Green. My animal id is #216243. I am a male white dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 4 years 2 months old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 1/2/2025, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- new baby.
Green is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns in care and in his previous home. Green in the care ceneter has not been acclimating, pawing at his kennel door during cleaning and his kennel being smeared with salivia due to his kennel stress throughout the day. In Green's previous home he is reported to bark at strangers and children, lunge at cats and resource guard his food/toys by growling and hard barking if approached. Green is social with staff in the care center, but is struggling despite best efforts to keep him comfortable. Medically, Green is Underweight.

What my friends at ACC say about me: I need a home without cats or small animals. I would do best in a home with only adult humans. I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets. Not only do I pull at heart strings, but I also pull on leash! I will need someone to help me with my leash manners. I don't always like to share my food, toys or bedding with other animals.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: Level 4
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),No cats
Recommendations comments:: No children (under 13)- Due to Greens Potential challenges we recommend he is placed in an adult only home at this time. No cats- We recommend Green is not housed with cat/small animals due to him Lunging,hard barking and growling at them.
Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Destructive behavior,Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration,Strength/leash pulling,Kennel presence
Potential challenges comments:: Resource guarding-Green is reported to resouce guard food, treats, and toys are valuable. Will growl or hard bark if approached/attempt to take away. which he has shown in the care center similar behaviors. Destructive behavior- Green is reported to have destructive tendencies we are unsure what that looks like in the home since no details were given. To address Green's destructive behavior, start by providing plenty of physical and mental stimulation through regular exercise, interactive toys, and puzzle feeders to keep him engaged. Please see the handout on Destructive behavior. Poor bite inhibition- In the prior home Green is reported to take treats roughly. Training should focus on offering treats with an open hand and using commands like "gentle" or "easy." Rewarding him for taking treats softly and providing chew toys can help improve his bite inhibition. Please see the handout on Mouthiness/poor bite inhibition. Handling/touch sensitivity- When leashed Green is reported to begin to thrash. Introduce the leash slowly, allowing him to sniff and get comfortable with it before attaching it. Once leashed, keep sessions brief and positive, using high-value treats to reinforce calm behavior. If he starts to thrash, calmly redirect his attention with a toy or treat. Please see the handout on Handling/touch sensitivity. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression- In Green prior home it is reported that h Will bark/growl when startled. Does not allow bathing or brushing And will growl and bark at strangers. Gradually desensitize him to triggers that cause barking or growling, such as sudden noises, by pairing them with high-value treats and praise. Introduce bathing and brushing slowly, using positive reinforcement to make these experiences more pleasant. Begin with short, gentle sessions and gradually increase the duration as he becomes more comfortable. For interactions with strangers, use controlled introductions, rewarding calm behavior and allowing Green to approach at his own pace. Please see the habfout on Fearful/potential for defensive aggression. Strength/leash pulling/On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration- In the prior home it is reported that Green is tolerant with familiar dog but Will lunge/hard bark or growl at unfamiliar dogs.Will react to cats, Dogs, strangers that approach the property, and children. He will react by growling/hard barking. Green will also pull har on the lead for walks. Please see the handout on Strength/leash pulling/On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration. Kennel presence- Green is reported to hard bark in kennel when people walk pass.
