Animal Profile

Ralphy

Hello, my name is Ralphy. My animal id is #237402. I am a desexed male tan dog at the Queens Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 months 1 weeks old.

I came into the shelter as a agency on 9/23/2025.

Ralphy is on the at-risk list due to behavior concerns. Ralphy has been highly dog reactive in the care center, escalating to lunging, hard barking, and fixating on other dogs during walks, requiring staff to manage his visibility around them. While he can be social and wiggly with staff in low-arousal settings, he struggles to refocus once triggered and remains difficult to redirect when reactive, making it difficult to walk him safely. Medically, Ralphy is apparently healthy.

I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe. I will need daily physical activity to keep me healthy and happy! Volunteer Note - He has many things that he absolutely loves. He's super wiggly and wiggly & loves back & butt scratches, cheek & ear rubs. He is dog reactive, but he's super people-friendly! He's like a little love sponge. He also loves toys and will entertain himself zooming around the yard tossing it in the air to himself, & plunking down to play with it. See the attached video....he's beyond ridiculous! Ralphy also loves fetch & chasing balls. And that's great for a high-energy dog like him. He loves treats & knows sit. He's backyard walks only & after he's done lots of running around & gotten lots of attention, if he hasn't yet pooped, I'll slowly walk him around the yard until he does. Ralphy is one of my favorite little gremlins.

Summary:: Due to entering the facility as a stray, there is no prior dog-to-dog history recorded. 09/24/25 Ralphy is introduced at the gate to a novel female dog while off leash at the care center. Ralphy will approach the gate with a high stiff tail and square posture. Ralphy attempts to make himself appear bigger along the gate line as he stands on his tip-toes. Ralphy appears to be sexually motivated as he remains present on his tip-toes transitioning to marking in the female dog's direction, followed by spreading his scent. Due to the female dog's discomfort, Ralphy is kept behind the gate and returned to kennel, concluding the interaction.

Summary (4):: 10/29/25 (Training Note): Ralphy is standing on the door of his kennel with a loose wiggly body and moderate pant as the handler approaches. He is easily leashed and pulls moderately outside. He pulls harder as he hears dogs and then barks when he sees a dog from a significant distance. He pulls to the point that his front feet come off of the ground. Once outside, Ralphy relaxes some and is able to play engage/ disengage with the handler. However, the dog must be at a distance when the handler starts and the handler has to use leash pressure and verbal encouragement to get Ralphy to turn around. Ralphy improves over time but quickly becomes overwhelmed when several dogs pass and is unable to disengage, barking and lunging. The handler brings him back inside and allows him to engage in enrichment items to decompress. Ralphy leans into contact with a loose wiggly body. As he spends time in the room, the intensity of his panting and the dilation of his pupils decrease. He is easily leashed and returned to kennel. Ralphy barks and lunges at several more dogs that he sees as he is returned to kennel, but enters the kennel without issue.

Summary (5):: 10/29: During playgroup, the handlers who are in the yard can hear hard barking and screeching coming from the ramp. They peer over and can see Ralphy and a staff member attempting to walk up the ramp, but they have some difficulty due to his lunging and attempting to pull hard towards the other dogs on the other side of the gate while he is vocalizing. Ralphy is taken to a smaller pen once in the yard. A handler passes Ralphy's pen with their dog heading towards the side of the yard where the playgroup is taking place. Ralphy charges the gate, but when he hits the end of the slip lead, he whips around and begins chewing. The handler sees the staff member reach into their treat pouch before turning the corner and is now out of sight. 10/28/25: Ralphy is standing at his kennel door with a wiggly frame. Ralphy is leashed with ease but pulls hard out of his kennel. As they exited the room, Ralphy spots a dog exiting their kennel and will begin to lunge and hard bark. The handler will direct him away and Ralphy jumps at them, briefly grazing their leg with his lip. As they walk down the hallway, multiple dogs are being walked out of their kennel rooms and into the hallway and as Ralphy spots them, he begins to lunge and hard bark even after the handler is able to direct him away and into another hallway while they exit the Care Center. He briefly engages with a treat scatter in the building before lunging forward again. He pulls hard out of the building and towards the ramp. A dog is being walked towards the top of the ramp while Ralphy is at the bottom and he begins to lunge towards them, barking. He is able to be redirected with treats and the handler is able to keep his attention as the dog approaches to pass them. As they pass the ramp too close, Ralphy will turn around to lunge but is quickly distracted with a treat scatter. He is then walked to the play yard where he will immediately sit in front of the handler, his paws tapping the ground and the handler's boots, to solicit treats. Ralphy will lean into contact with a loose and wiggly body for the remainder of the time in the yard. As they pass the neighboring yard, Ralphy is engaged with the handler until the dog in that yard runs towards the fence barking at, at which point, Ralphy will begin to lunge and bark back. He is quickly directed away and onto the ramp. He will pull moderately down the ramp and briefly jumps onto the fence with a loose body as he sees a familiar handler who tosses him some treats. As he is returned to his kennel, he will lunge and bark as they pass two kennel rooms. He is secured safely.

Summary (6):: 10/22/25 (Trainer Note): Ralphy is standing at the front of his kennel with a loose, wiggly body as the handler approaches. He is easily leashed and pulls moderately outside. Ralphy sees a dog from a distance and barks once but is redirected and brought out of the line of sight. Handler then proceeds outside with Ralphy who lunges and barks when he hears other dogs barking in the kennel room. Once outside, the handler works with him on looking at dogs without reacting. He is able to do so for the first two dogs, but by the third dog becomes overwhelmed and lunges and barks. The handler is able to redirect him and gives him a treat scatter to distract him while the dog walks past. Another dog goes by and the handler moves Ralphy quickly past it before reinforcing. He is able to pass without escalating though he pulls towards the dog with a tense body. Ralphy is brought to the play yard where he leans into contact. The handler attempts to create a big positive response each time Ralphy turns towards them, marking the behavior, giving a treat, and then enthusiastically petting him. Ralphy is able to turn away from a dog at a short distance in the yard, but barks once when the dog passes again. Handler walks Ralphy back to kennel without passing other dogs and works with him on the 123 game. He is returned to kennel without issue. 10/21: Volunteer reports - Ralphy is highly dog reactive & hard barks at every dog he sees. Once in a quiet space Ralphy is super wiggly & loves back & butt scratches, cheek & ear rubs. Ralphy is super people-friendly. He's like a little love sponge. He also loves toys and will entertain himself zooming around the yard tossing it in the air to himself, & plunking down to play with it. 10/16/25: Ralphy is observed to be highly dog reactive, as a staff member struggles to refocus him and bring him back into the building while he is lunging and barking. 10/15/25 (Trainer Note): Ralphy is standing at the front of his kennel with a loose, wiggly body as the handler approaches. He is easily leashed and pulls moderately to the canine training room. Ralphy is loose and social with staff, wiggling incessantly. The handler works with him on the 123 game and take a breath, though it is hard to tell when he is breathing due to the wiggling. Ralphy participates readily and explores some of the available enrichment items before returning to kennel without issue.

Summary (7):: 10/12/25: Ralphy is reported and observed to be highly dog reactive on his walks, having to be walked inbetween cars to make sure he does not see the dogs. Ralphy will lunge, hard bark and fixate. 10/08/25 (Trainer Note): Ralphy is standing at the front of his kennel with a loose, wiggly body as the handler approaches. He follows a treat through the leash and pulls hard to the canine live room. He engages readily in the various enrichment items, orienting towards the handler between each. The handler works with him on taking a deep breath but he is only able to do it with the lure. Handler conditions the 123 game and Ralphy starts to understand, turning away from the enrichment items. He is easily leashed and pulls hard back to kennel. 09/24/25 (Assessment Note): Ralphy is standing at the front of his kennel with a loose, wiggly body and allows the handler to leash him with ease. In the assessment room, a drag leash is placed on him, and he roams freely. Ralphy accepted handling, leaning in as the handler rubbed his back. He tolerated running without becoming aroused and did not react to the knock. During the toy portion, he grabbed the toy and walked away with it. Ralphy was returned to his kennel safely without issue. For more information, see behavior assessment. 09/24/25 (PG Note): Ralphy is standing at the front of his kennel with a loose, wiggly frame and allows the handler to leash him with ease. Once in the play yard, a drag leash is placed on him, and he began displacement sniffing and relieving himself. At the greeting gate, he presented a high tail, stiff body, and kicked his back legs, displaying signs of sexual motivation. Once the gate opened, both dogs greeted with loose, wiggly bodies, and Ralphy engaged briefly in play bows and running. Shortly after, he became skittish and conflicted, appearing uncomfortable with his playmate’s forward play style. Ralphy chose to roam the yard but did not re-engage. He was returned to his kennel safely without issue. For more information, see dog-to-dog note
