Princess was placed at risk due to behavior concerns; In the care center Princess remains shut down and avoids handlers during any interactions, she is often observed to be frozen in place, lip licking and looking away. Due to the high levels of fear, we feel as though she may be best set up to succeed if placed with an experienced rescue partner who can reassess her behavior in a more stable environment. Your newly adopted pet has been diagnosed with a heart murmur and the staff veterinarians are issuing a PERMANENT waiver from the spay/neuter requirements of the City of NY. ACC does not have the facility to safely sterilize your pet with his/her current condition. However, your veterinarian will provide consultation on whether this procedure can or should be performed under their supervision. Follow up care at your regular veterinarian is recommended to ensure continued treatment and proper oversight of your pet's health. All costs for follow up care and subsequent surgery is at the expense of the adopter.

Summary:: Princess remains shut down in the care center, avoiding all forms of interaction and allowing only minimal handling. Princess remains motionless while on leash and begins to tremble, she is not easily coaxed with food, toys or treats. Due to her level of fear, she is not an appropriate candidate for an assessment at this time.
Summary:: According to Princess's previous owner, she has been around her 2 litter-mates and her mother. She was described to be playful, respectful, and tolerant of them. She would play rough with her siblings. 12/18: Princess was difficult for handlers to remove from her kennel due to her high levels of fear resulting in her being shutdown. When approached she growls and she has been reluctant to walk, cowers, and pancakes. Out of concern for her stress levels, a dog-dog interaction was not conducted. 12/22: Princess was initially tucked into a ball, in the corner of the yard until a familiar male dog approached the gate. She stood up, exchanged greets, while maintaining her tightly tucked posture, and then spent the entire session exploring the yard with him, avoiding handlers.
Date of intake:: 12/17/2019
Summary:: Tense
Date of initial:: 12/17/2019
Summary:: Tense, shaking, whale eyed
IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: 12/31: Two handlers approached Princess was laying down in her kennel and stepped to the back of the kennel briefly before approaching the front slowly. One handler offered Princess treats and she took them with a soft mouth, but when the second handler attempted to leash her for medical treatments, Princess jumped up and grabbed and held onto the lead. The handler dropped the lead and she pulled it into the kennel. The second handler offered Princess treats to distract her from the leash, but she took them briefly before crouching over the rope. The second handler walked around to the other side of the kennel and tossed treats into the kennel and Princess ran over and the lead was removed. During a second attempt, Princess remained fixated on the handler holding the lead. She maintained her crouched position and tracked objects that were in their hands. When an object entered close proximity, Princess would bite and hold onto it (tongue depressor with wet food, a rubber toy, the kennel blocker). When the treatment was completed, one of the handlers was replacing Princess's kennel blocker when she attempted to bite the handler's hand; a corner of the blocker entered her kennel, Princess bites and holds onto the blocker.
